Chapter 44 - Target Acquired

I lay back on my couch, watching TV whilst thinking about what I had to do next.

Half of the future Avengers remained for me to scare. Although Cap was pretty resilient, me being introduced to him was already good progress. The fact that Fury introduced me to him was a big decision from his end; I would likely have more chances to meet Cap later on.

So, that left me with the Hulk and Iron Man.

Fury had already foreshadowed that he planned on sending me after Banner, which, although completely insane, was something I'd inevitably have to do anyway.

Thankfully, he didn't seem to plan on sending me over immediately, so I had time to plan until that encounter.

As for Tony Stark, he wasn't nearly as troublesome, matter of fact, since he was such a public figure, it would be pretty easy for me to track him down and spook him.

He was enough of a celebrity to be on the news right now.

"-and joining us this evening is correspondent Christine Everheart, who's been covering the announcement. Christine, what can you tell us about tomorrow's summit?"

"Thanks, John. Yes, the Meridian Centre here in Manhattan will be hosting what organisers are calling one of the most significant clean energy investment gatherings of the decade. Several major figures from the technology and renewable energy sectors are confirmed to attend, including-"

I turned up the volume.

"-Tony Stark, whose recent pivot away from Stark Industries' defence contracts toward sustainable energy technology has made him the most talked about figure in the sector. Stark is expected to deliver a keynote address tomorrow evening before a private dinner-"

My back straightened as I focused intently on the broadcast.

Unsurprisingly, such an exclusive event was invite-only, not something a random nobody would just be able to walk into.

Fortunately, I wasn't a random nobody.

I reached for the unbranded phone Shaw had given me, dialling the number of a contact I had been given.

It rang twice.

"Black Knight." A monotone voice spoke my title from the other end.

"The energy summit in Manhattan, I need an invite."

There was a brief pause.

"Consider it done."

With that, I hung up the phone. Despite the simple confirmation, I had more than enough trust that Hellfire's connections would easily get me in such an event.

I looked back at the flatscreen as it replayed an old clip of Stark announcing the effective immediate closure of his company's weapons manufacturing division.

It was a sudden decision for me to attend the event, but I wouldn't have to do anything close to the insanity I caused in New Mexico.

Anyway, if I showed my full breadth of abilities just to scare Stark, he would inevitably end up trying to create countermeasures against me.

Instead, my best bet was to shake him through my inexplicability.

From what I knew about Stark, he was the type of guy to go crazy over things he didn't understand. He was someone constantly used to being the smartest in the room by miles, something I could use against him.

The move would be to plant a seed in his mind. It didn't necessarily have to make him feel fear right away, but enough for me to stay in his mind until I could really scare him in a second or third encounter.

This time round, I felt Stark's own imagination would be far more effective than using brute force.

---

My invite had arrived in the middle of the night while I was asleep, only a few hours after I had called my contact.

'They move fast.'

Looking at the file I had been sent by text, the invite didn't even have a name, just a seat number and a marking indicating that I was a VIP.

I looked in the mirror whilst fixing up my suit. My dressing was appropriate, though my hair was probably a little noticeable.

It had been a while since I had dyed it blonde, so after a haircut, only my bleached tips remained, with my natural black coming through again.

Well, it didn't matter much; I didn't really care about whatever some random billionaire thought about me. The only person I planned on talking to was Stark.

As expected, a Phantom was waiting to pick me up, driven by a stern man I didn't recognise.

Once I entered, he immediately began driving without asking any questions. Perhaps some people would be slightly creeped out by this kind of treatment, but I preferred it.
