Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Shadows in the Canopy

The forest had grown quieter, unnaturally quiet, as if every bird and leaf had held its breath. She pedaled slower now, glancing over her shoulder, eyes wide with a mix of curiosity and fear. I ran alongside, feeling the golden lines pulse beneath my vision, tracing a network of danger that no one else could see. The patterns weren't just symbols anymore — they were warnings.

A low hum vibrated through the trees. I froze. The symbols carved into the trunks glimmered briefly, then vanished. Something moved above us in the canopy — not a bird, not an animal, but a figure cloaked in shadow, perfectly still, watching. My chest tightened. The Circle didn't make mistakes. They were aware of me.

She slowed her bike to a stop and looked at me. "Why do I feel like we're being followed?" she whispered. Her hand brushed against mine. The contact sent a jolt through me, grounding me in the chaos, reminding me why I couldn't turn back. I wanted to protect her, even as the forest seemed to conspire against us.

I took a deep breath and focused. The patterns revealed a path — faint lines twisting between trees, guiding us toward safety. But halfway through, the forest shifted again. A branch snapped behind us, sharp and deliberate. I spun around — nothing. Then I realized the ground beneath us wasn't normal. The dirt subtly rearranged itself, forming the outline of a circle. A trap.

Before I could warn her, a shadow detached from the trees. The figure moved unnaturally fast, materializing in front of us with eyes that glowed faintly red. Symbols spiraled around it, pulsing with a rhythm that matched my heartbeat. My vision blurred as the lines of the world bent toward it, connecting me to every danger I'd ignored.

"You shouldn't see this," a voice whispered, both distant and inside my head. The figure raised a hand. My superpower screamed a warning. And then, without touching us, the shadow disappeared, leaving a single token behind — a silver leaf, etched with a tiny, incomprehensible rune.

She stared at it, trembling. "What… what does it mean?"

I swallowed hard, feeling the forest close in around us. "It means… we're not alone. And the world you think you know… doesn't belong to you."

The golden lines faded, but the pulse remained, stronger than ever. Whatever waited in the shadows… it was coming for us.
