Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Predator in the Silk

The aftermath of the Crimson Trench was a symphony of sirens and the heavy thrum of medical transport engines. The recruit vanguard had suffered a forty percent casualty rate, but the headlines of the internal military network were focused on only one thing: The Ghost of Section 4.

Han Chen sat on the edge of a transport truck, his uniform shredded and soaked in the obsidian blood of the Shadow-Stalker. His chest heaved, each breath a sharp reminder of the cost of the Equalizer.

"Drink this."

A flask was thrust into his field of vision. Chen looked up. It wasn't Lin Xia or the trembling Lu Feng. Standing before him was a woman he hadn't seen in the barracks.

She wore the dark tactical suit of the Intelligence Division—a skin-tight weave of mana-conductive fibers that shimmered like oil on water. Her hair was a deep, bruised purple, tied in a high ponytail, and her eyes were a piercing, unnatural amber. She was beautiful, but it was the beauty of a jagged glass shard.

"I'm Yue Ying," she said, her voice like velvet sliding over a blade. "Medical Logistics. You look like you're about to implode, Recruit."

Chen didn't take the flask. His Chronos-Void talent gave him a sixth sense for spatial distortions, and the air around this woman was... wrong. It was too still. "I'm fine," he said shortly.

"Modest," Yue Ying smiled, sitting beside him. Her scent was a strange mix of jasmine and ozone. "The whole base is talking. An F-Rank 'Storage' user pinned a Tier 4 Shadow-Stalker to a wall with a javelin. The General is supposedly calling for a full debriefing of your squad. You're a celebrity, Han Chen."

"I'm a soldier," Chen corrected, standing up to leave.

As he brushed past her, Yue Ying's hand darted out, seemingly to steady herself, but her fingers grazed the pulse point on Chen's neck. In that micro-second, Chen felt a needle-like prick—a probe of Tier 5 mana attempting to map his internal meridians.

> [HOSTILE PROBE DETECTED!]

> [EQUALIZER: COUNTER-RESONANCE INITIALIZED...]

>

Chen's body reacted before his mind did. He grabbed Yue Ying's wrist, his grip tightening with a sudden, violent surge of Tier 5 pressure. The metal bench they were sitting on groaned under the reflected weight of their sudden tension.

Yue Ying's amber eyes widened. Tier 5? Her internal report had said he matched a Tier 4. He's growing even as he sits here?

"You should be careful where you put your hands, 'Medical Logistics'," Chen whispered, his face inches from hers. The coldness in his eyes made the seasoned assassin flinch.

"My apologies," she breathed, her smile never faltering though her wrist was bruising. "Just checking your vitals. You're... very healthy."

Chen released her and walked away without a backward glance.

Yue Ying watched him disappear into the barracks, her hand trembling slightly. She tapped a hidden comm-link in her molar. "Report. The target's 'Equalization' isn't a static talent. It's adaptive. He just mirrored my Tier 5 probe instantly. If we don't harvest him before he reaches Tier 6, he will be untouchable."

The Command Tower: The Mother's Mercy

Inside the sanctum of the East Base headquarters, General Ye Xuan stared at the holographic recording of Chen's fight. She had replayed the javelin strike forty times.

"General," Adjutant Li Mei whispered. "The Military Tribunal is demanding he be moved to the 'Special Research Division.' They think he's a Natural Mutant. If he goes there, he'll be a lab rat."

Ye Xuan's eyes flared with a silver light. "No one touches him."

"The Ye Family Patriarch has already sent an envoy," Li Mei continued, her voice trembling. "They claim he is 'Clan Property' due to the nature of his... origin."

Ye Xuan stood up, her Tier 9 aura erupting like a supernova. The windows of the command tower cracked. "He is my son! Not a piece of fruit to be sliced!"

She looked down at the barracks, where she could see Chen's heat signature through the walls. She wanted to run to him, to wrap him in a spatial barrier and fly him to the ends of the earth. But she knew Chen. If she forced him to stay, he would hate her even more. If she let him go, he would be hunted.

"Li Mei," Ye Xuan said, her voice dropping to a terrifying calm. "Assign Yue Ying to his squad. Tell her it's a 'protection' detail. I know she is a Ye Family plant, but as long as she thinks she's 'monitoring' him for the Patriarch, she won't kill him yet. I need her to be his shadow while I find a way to kill my own father."

The Midnight Training

At 2:00 AM, Chen didn't sleep. He stood in the darkened training hall, the only sound the rhythmic thud of his heartbeat.

He held a training dagger. He focused on the "Storage" aspect of his talent. If I can store kinetic energy, he thought, can I store 'Space' itself?

He slashed the air.

> [SKILL EVOLUTION: VOID RIFT (0.01%)]

> Description: The Host can now 'store' a 1-meter slice of space. Anything entering this slice is redirected to the Void.

>

Chen smiled for the first time since his awakening. It wasn't a smile of joy, but of a predator finding its claws. He didn't know his mother was watching him through the cameras, crying in silence. He didn't know the woman who gave him the flask was planning to cut out his heart.

All he knew was that for the first time in eighteen years, the world was afraid of him.
