Nobody in Surulere understood how Tobi Ogunleye survived without a phone.
No Instagram.
No WhatsApp.
No TikTok.
No data bundles, no notifications, nothing.
But what they didn't know was this:
Being offline wasn't his curse.
It was his power.
Chapter One — The Glitch in Reality
It started one Thursday during morning assembly.
As the principal droned on, Tobi yawned… and the world glitched.
Not dramatically — no explosions, no thunder — but like an invisible screen flickered for half a second.
Tobi blinked hard.
Everyone else continued normally, except one thing:
The school emblem on the wall suddenly displayed a shimmering line of text:
"Connection Lost: User Remains Offline."
Tobi rubbed his eyes.
"Ha. Maybe I'm hungry."
But as the day went on, more strange things happened.
When his class wrote a surprise test, the questions on Tobi's paper changed automatically to easier ones.
When the school's loud fan stopped working, a message flashed above it:
"Rebooting Device…"
Then the fan restarted.
Tobi didn't know whether to panic or ask for acceptance letter from Hogwarts.
Chapter Two — The Girl Who Saw the Glitch
At lunch, he sat beside Amara Chukwu, the new girl with the sky-blue backpack.
He didn't plan to tell her anything bizarre, but fate had plans.
Because right there, on his desk, the air shimmered and displayed another floating message:
"New Quest Unlocked: Talk to Her."
Tobi nearly screamed.
Amara noticed his reaction.
"Are you okay?"
"Well…" he hesitated, "something weird is happening."
She leaned closer, curious. "Tell me."
Tobi swallowed. "I think… I'm seeing things. Like… game text."
To his shock, Amara didn't laugh.
Instead she whispered:
"I thought it was only me."
Tobi froze. "You too?"
She nodded. "Yesterday, the board in Chemistry wrote 'Level Up Required' after I failed a calculation."
They stared at each other.
A very offline boy and a girl trying to be offline…
Somehow seeing fantasy system powers nobody else could see.
Something connected them that moment — something magical and unexpected.
Chapter Three — Goats, Glitches, and Destiny
Later that day, while walking home, Tobi passed Mama Ndidi's house.
The same stubborn goat rushed out again — determined to avenge the previous embarrassment.
But this time, as the goat charged, glowing text appeared above it:
"Enemy Approaching: Rank – Low-Level Goat."
Tobi shouted, "Low-level wetin?!"
Instead of running, something inside him activated.
He raised his hand, and the goat froze mid-charge — suspended half a second — as if lagging in bad network.
Then it continued running… but slowly.
Like slow-motion replay.
Tobi quickly dodged it.
A man watching yelled, "Offline King don get superpower!"
Another shouted, "Na him! He dey control animal network!"
Tobi ran home, heart pounding.
He wasn't just offline anymore.
He was connected to something else entirely.
Chapter Four — The Secret Patch Notes
That night, a soft glow filled Tobi's room.
A small rectangular screen hovered in the air like a hologram.
It read:
WELCOME, OFFLINE KING
System: Glitchverse v1.0 Activated
Ability: Disrupt Digital Reality
Status: Unconnected = Unlimited Potential
Tobi gasped.
Another text appeared:
"Warning: This power must stay hidden. Online users may abuse it."
He sat up. "So… being offline gave me… magic?"
The message blinked once.
Then disappeared.
Chapter Five — Talent Day, But With Powers
The school's annual Talent Day arrived.
Amara encouraged Tobi to perform comedy.
"Use your offline jokes," she said. "They're funnier than you think."
But Tobi was nervous.
Until right before he went on stage…
A glowing message appeared:
"Boost Activated: +20% Confidence"
"Ah," Tobi muttered, "so this system works for stage fright too."
He stepped on stage.
Students shouted:
"Offline King!"
"Tell us old-school stories!"
"No QR code needed!"
He began his comedy skit about the goat incident.
But to his shock — and everyone's delight — the air glitched behind him, showing mini illusions of the goat running.
People laughed like their ribs would break.
Then the mic malfunctioned and died.
But a floating message appeared:
"Fix Device?"
YES / NO
Tobi blinked at it.
"…Yes?"
The mic instantly powered back on.
The hall erupted again.
Kunle screamed from the crowd,
"Offline King, abeg connect my Bluetooth speaker too!"
By the end, the applause was thunderous.
Teachers were crying from laughter.
Even the principal said:
"This is the funniest, most confusing performance we've ever had."
Tobi won Best Performance.
Chapter Six — Sweet Ending, Offline Heart
After the event, Amara found Tobi outside.
"You were unbelievable," she said with a shy smile.
"Me? You're the one who believed me first," Tobi replied.
A soft shimmer appeared above Amara's head:
"NPC Affection Level Increased."
Tobi's eyes widened.
He quickly waved the message away like clearing a notification before someone else sees.
Amara laughed. "You're smiling like you just unlocked treasure."
"Maybe I did," he said.
They sat together under a tree while the school buzzed with students discussing his performance.
"You know," Amara said softly, "being offline made us see something magical others can't."
"Yeah," Tobi replied. "Maybe being different isn't so bad."
Amara nudged him playfully. "So… will you allow me into your offline kingdom?"
Tobi grinned.
"Queen Amara," he said, "the kingdom has been waiting for you."
A small light flickered gently in the air above them:
"New Party Formed."
Offline King + Offline Queen
Adventure Begins…"
Tobi laughed.
Maybe he wasn't online like everyone else.
But he had something better:
A friend.
A partner in weirdness.
Someone who shared the glitch.
And together…
Their offline world felt more magical than any online one could ever be.
