Chapter 5 - The Golden Arrow and the Silver Arrow

A Grimm's Fairy Tale: The Wonderful Legend of Cupid

High above the clouds stood Mount Olympus, home to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and her playful son Cupid. With crystal-clear white wings and two magical bows at his side, Cupid roamed between heaven and earth each day—his golden arrows could spark love in hearts, while his silver arrows awakened feelings of dislike. Under his care, love bloomed across the world like flowers in spring.

But on the day of the spring equinox, disaster struck. Erebus, the god of darkness, crept into Cupid's temple and sealed the magic of his arrows with dark sorcery. From that moment on, love and hate in the world grew muddled: lovers turned on each other overnight, strangers clung together for no reason, and even the gods of Olympus grew moody and unpredictable.

Seeing the chaos he had caused, Cupid felt deep guilt and anxiety. He tried to awaken his arrows with divine power, but each attempt was repelled by the dark seal. Venus held her son close and said gently, "My child, you are not to blame. To break this seal, you must find the 'Fountain of True Hearts' and the 'Petal of Eternity'—both lie in the 'Land of Forgotten Memories' on earth, a place full of dangers…"

Cupid did not hesitate. "Mother, I will go there at once! I will not rest until love returns to the world!"

Venus looked at his determined eyes and gave him a crystal pendant that glowed with soft light. "This is the 'Guardian of Love.' It will protect you when danger comes. Remember: only pure sincerity can guide you through the Land of Forgotten Memories—falsehood and deceit will lead you astray."

Farewell to his mother, Cupid hid his wings and descended to earth as a young boy in white robes. The world below was unrecognizable: streets were empty, faces were cold, and even the flowers seemed to have lost their color.

As he traveled, Cupid met countless people torn apart by the confusion—couples arguing bitterly, families turning against each other. He wanted to help, but his powerless arrows were useless. With a heavy heart, he swore to find the Fountain of True Hearts as soon as possible.

After days of searching, Cupid finally found the entrance to the Land of Forgotten Memories—a mist-shrouded valley marked by an ancient stone tablet carved with words: "Those who enter shall lose their past; only those who seek truth shall find their way back."

Cupid stepped into the valley, where the air was thick with forgetfulness. Soon, his memories of heaven began to fade, and he stumbled forward in a daze until he heard a soft song drifting through the mist.

Following the sound, he found a girl in a light blue dress sitting by a stream, weaving white flowers into a crown. Her voice was warm and clear, cutting through the fog like sunlight: "Golden arrows fly, silver arrows gleam; true hearts never stray, in sunshine or in dream…"

Cupid felt a strange sense of familiarity as he approached. The girl looked up, her eyes bright as stars. "Who are you? You look lost."

"I'm… I'm looking for something important, but I can't remember what it is," Cupid said, rubbing his head.

The girl smiled kindly. "My name is Xiao Ai. I've lived here all my life—this valley is my home. Let me help you find your way."

As they walked, Xiao Ai noticed Cupid's confusion and held out her hand. "Don't worry. The mist here makes people forget, but if you hold on to something precious, you won't lose yourself completely." She gave him a small white flower. "This is a Memory Flower—it will help you hold on to what matters most."

Cupid clutched the flower tightly, and fragments of his memories slowly returned. "I remember now! I'm Cupid, and I've come to find the Fountain of True Hearts and the Petal of Eternity!"

Xiao Ai's eyes widened in surprise. "You're the little god of love! My grandmother told me stories about you—she said you once saved our valley from a drought with your arrows." She paused, then added softly, "But lately, strange things have been happening here too. The flowers are wilting, and people are growing cold and distant…"

Together, they explored deeper into the valley, where Xiao Ai showed Cupid a hidden path leading to a crystal cave. Along the way, she told him about the valley's secrets: "This place was once filled with love and laughter. My grandmother said that long ago, a kind god and a mortal girl fell in love here, and their bond made the land bloom. But as time passed, people forgot their story, and the valley began to fade."

As she spoke, they reached a clearing where a massive stone gate stood closed, carved with the image of a pair of arrows—one gold, one silver. Cupid reached out to push it open, but a dark shadow emerged, blocking his way.

"Who dares disturb the peace of this place?" A deep voice echoed through the air, and a tall figure in black robes stepped forward. "Cupid—you who once brought love to this land have now brought chaos. Leave now, or face the consequences!"

Cupid stepped forward bravely. "I did not bring chaos—I came to save this world from the darkness that has clouded people's hearts!"

The robed figure laughed coldly. "Save the world? You who have lost your own power? You are no longer the god of love—you are just a lost child!"

As they argued, the ground began to shake, and the stone gate slowly opened, revealing a vast underground chamber. Inside, a pool of water glowed with faint light, and on a pedestal beside it lay a single white flower that never wilted.

"This is the Fountain of True Hearts, and that is the Flower of Eternity," Xiao Ai whispered, her eyes wide with wonder. "My grandmother said it would bloom again when the true god of love returned."

The robed figure lunged at the flower, but Cupid blocked him with his body. In the struggle, his hand brushed against the Fountain of True Hearts, and suddenly, visions flooded his mind—scenes of the past:

Long ago, a mortal girl named Ai had fallen in love with a celestial being who had come to earth. Together, they had brought love and prosperity to the valley, and the Flower of Eternity had bloomed in honor of their bond. But when darkness threatened the world, the celestial had to return to heaven, promising to come back one day. While he was gone, people forgot their love and grew cold, and the valley began to fade.

Moved by the vision, Cupid felt warmth spreading through his body. He reached for the Flower of Eternity, and as his fingers touched its petals, golden light burst forth—his wings reappeared, glowing with brilliant light. The golden and silver arrows in his hands blazed with renewed magic.

"The power of love has returned!" Cupid cried out, raising his bow to the sky. "Let light drive away darkness!"

His arrows shot through the air, shattering the dark magic that had shrouded the valley. The robed figure, seeing his plan fail, summoned a horde of shadow beasts to attack. But Cupid and Xiao Ai fought side by side, their courage inspiring the people of the valley to rise up and defend their home.

As the battle raged, the shadow beasts grew stronger, their forms twisting into a massive monster that blocked out the sun. Cupid charged forward but was knocked back by the beast's tail, crashing to the ground.

Xiao Ai rushed to his side, tears in her eyes. She took the Flower of Eternity and held it high, singing the song her grandmother had taught her: "True hearts are strong, love guides our way; through darkness and storm, we shall not stray…"

The flower glowed with golden light, merging with Cupid's arrows. Together, they struck the monster's heart, and with a roar, it crumbled into dust. The robed figure, defeated, was sealed away in the depths of the cave.

When peace returned, Cupid and Xiao Ai returned to Olympus with the Fountain of True Hearts and the Flower of Eternity. Venus embraced her son tightly, tears of joy streaming down her face. "My child—you have restored love to the world!"

The gods gathered to celebrate, and Zeus himself declared: "Cupid, you have proven your worth. From this day forward, you shall be known as the 'God of True Love,' and your arrows shall forever stand as a symbol of love's power!"

Cupid bowed low, then turned to Xiao Ai. "You are the reason I found my way back—your sincerity and courage awakened the magic within me. Will you stay with me, to spread love across the world together?"

Xiao Ai smiled and took his hand. "I will stand by you always, as your friend and partner in love."

Venus stepped forward, holding a crown woven from golden arrows and white flowers. "My children, this crown represents the bond between heaven and earth—love knows no boundaries, and together you shall guard this world with all your hearts."

On the day of their union, the sky was filled with golden and silver arrows that burst into flowers as they fell. People across the world gathered to celebrate, and from that day on, the legend of Cupid and the girl from the valley spread far and wide.

Years later, when their children took up the task of guarding the realm, a statue was erected in the palace square—Cupid with his golden and silver arrows, Xiao Ai holding the Flower of Eternity, both gazing toward the horizon. It stands to this day, a reminder that true love is found not in magic, but in sincerity, courage, and the willingness to stand together through all storms.
