Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 — Maybe We Couldn't Stay Together Forever

After my exams were finally over, I felt like I needed to get away from everything for a while.

The pressure of studies.

The constant thoughts.

The memories.

The things that had happened between me and Payel.

Everything had started feeling too heavy.

So when I got the chance to go to Assam and stay at my friend's house, I didn't think twice.

His sister was getting married, and there was a lot happening at their home.

People were coming and going.

The house was always full of noise.

There were preparations everywhere.

Relatives.

Guests.

Laughter.

Music.

Food.

Wedding rituals.

For a while, it felt good to be surrounded by people.

I stayed there for around three weeks.

Three weeks away from my usual routine.

Three weeks where I could pretend that life was normal.

And for the most part, I tried.

I laughed with my friends.

I helped wherever I could.

I enjoyed the wedding preparations.

I stayed awake late at night talking with everyone.

There were moments when I genuinely forgot everything.

But only for a while.

Because no matter how busy I kept myself, there was always a small corner of my mind where Payel remained.

I didn't talk about her.

I didn't mention her name.

I didn't tell everyone what had happened.

But sometimes, when everyone around me was laughing, I would suddenly become quiet.

I'd remember something.

A conversation.

A message.

A smile.

And then I'd force myself back into the moment.

I thought I was getting better.

Maybe I was.

Or maybe I had simply learned how to hide it better.

Then one day, while I was staying at my friend's house, my phone vibrated.

I looked at the screen.

It was Pritam.

He was Payel's classmate and also my junior.

I opened the message casually.

I had no idea that one sentence was about to bring back a feeling I had been trying so hard to control.

He had written,

"Bhaiya, do you know Payel is going to Kolkata?"

I stopped.

I read it again.

Payel is going to Kolkata.

For a moment, I didn't react.

I just stared at the screen.

Something inside my chest tightened.

I don't know why.

I had already accepted that we weren't together.

I had already told myself that I couldn't force her to stay.

I had already decided that I needed to move forward.

But hearing that she was going somewhere far away made everything suddenly feel real again.

Kolkata.

It sounded so far.

Maybe because I knew that if she went there, the chances of seeing her again would become even smaller.

I looked away from my phone.

I took a deep breath.

I didn't want Pritam to know that the message had affected me.

So I replied simply,

"Let her go."

Three words.

That's all I wrote.

But those three words carried much more than they appeared to.

Let her go.

I had to say it.

Because what else could I say?

Could I tell him that I didn't want her to leave?

Could I ask him to stop her?

Could I admit that the thought of her going away hurt?

No.

I had no right.

She had already made her decision.

She had already walked away.

So if she wanted to go somewhere else, I had to accept it.

I put my phone down.

Then I looked around.

Everyone else was busy with the wedding preparations.

Someone was laughing.

Someone was calling another person.

Music was playing somewhere.

Life was continuing.

And I was sitting there quietly, trying to convince myself that three words were enough.

"Let her go."

But deep down...

I didn't want to.

I just knew I had to.

---

The new session of Class 12 began after that.

I had expected things to become better.

I thought maybe a new academic year would give me a fresh start.

A new class.

New goals.

New responsibilities.

A chance to focus on my future.

But the first three months of Class 12 were some of the worst months for me.

I became seriously ill.

My health kept getting worse.

There were days when even getting out of bed felt difficult.

Going to college became a struggle.

Instead of attending regularly, I could barely manage to go twice a week.

Sometimes I would go only because I had an exam.

I would somehow get ready.

Go to college.

Sit through the exam.

And then come straight back.

I wasn't living the normal student life anymore.

I was simply trying to get through each day.

My attendance suffered.

My studies suffered.

My concentration suffered.

And somewhere inside all of that, my mind was still carrying everything that had happened before.

I wanted to study.

I wanted to improve.

I wanted to prove myself.

But my body wasn't cooperating.

For those first three months, I felt like I was losing control of everything.

My health.

My studies.

My confidence.

My future.

I kept telling myself,

"Once I get better, I'll fix everything."

I didn't know when that would happen.

But I held onto that thought.

Then one day...

something happened that I wasn't prepared for.

I went to school.

I was already feeling a little weak, but I had gone anyway.

I entered the campus.

I was walking through the school when suddenly...

I saw her.

Payel.

I stopped.

For a second, I genuinely thought I was imagining it.

My eyes stayed fixed on her.

She was there.

In my school.

My heart started beating so fast that I could almost hear it.

I couldn't understand what was happening.

What is she doing here?

The first thought that came into my mind was,

Didn't she go to Kolkata?

I remembered Pritam's message.

"Payel is going to Kolkata."

I remembered my reply.

"Let her go."

And now she was standing in front of me.

In my school.

The person I had spent months trying to forget was suddenly right there.

It felt like life was playing some kind of cruel joke on me.

I looked around.

Then I saw Pritam.

He was there too.

He was her classmate.

I immediately walked toward him.

"Oye."

He looked at me.

I asked,

"Payel ne yahan par admission liya? Par tune toh bola tha ki woh Kolkata chali jayegi."

The moment I said it, I noticed his expression change.

He panicked.

He looked uncomfortable.

Then he replied,

"Bhaiya... humein toh yahi pata tha."

I looked at him.

I didn't know what to say.

Maybe he genuinely didn't know.

Maybe everyone had believed she was going to Kolkata.

Maybe things had changed.

I didn't ask further.

I simply looked away.

And there she was.

Again.

The person I had been trying to move on from.

The person I had told myself I wouldn't chase anymore.

The person who had somehow ended up in the exact same place as me.

I made a decision.

I would ignore her.

Not because I hated her.

Not because I didn't care.

But because I didn't know what else to do.

If I started talking to her again, everything would come back.

Every feeling.

Every memory.

Every hope.

Every wound.

And I wasn't sure I could survive going through all of that again.

So I walked away.

I focused on my studies.

Or at least, I tried.

I ignored her.

I ignored Pritam.

I kept my attention on my books.

I told myself,

"Don't look."

"Don't think."

"Just study."

But life had other plans.

Because apparently, my luck had decided,

"Na bhai, tereko itni shanti toh main dene wala nahi hoon."

Just when I thought I had finally found some stability...

I became sick again.

And this time, it was serious.

I couldn't even speak properly.

My voice was almost gone.

Talking became difficult.

Studying became difficult.

Even sitting through classes felt exhausting.

And right in the middle of all this...

I had my tests.

I already knew I wasn't prepared properly.

But I still tried.

Especially in Economics.

That subject had always been my weakness.

And this time, it hit me harder than ever.

I gave the test.

Then waited for the results.

When the results came...

I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

My Economics marks were terrible.

Really terrible.

And because of that one subject...

my entire rank collapsed.

I had been somewhere near the top before.

Now I had fallen all the way to 28th rank.

Twenty-eight.

I stared at the result.

I couldn't believe it.

Twenty-five ranks down.

Twenty-five.

It didn't feel real.

How could one subject pull me down so badly?

How had everything changed so quickly?

I felt humiliated.

I felt angry.

Mostly...

I felt disappointed in myself.

And then came something that hurt even more.

My teachers started losing faith in me.

The same teachers who had once believed I could do well were now looking at my results differently.

I could feel it.

Their expectations had changed.

Maybe they thought I wasn't serious anymore.

Maybe they thought I couldn't handle Class 12.

Maybe they thought my earlier results had simply been luck.

That hurt.

More than the rank itself.

Because I had always wanted to prove that I was capable.

And now it felt like everyone was beginning to doubt me.

But this time...

I refused to stay down.

Once my health finally started improving, I made a decision.

I was going to study harder than before.

Not just for marks.

Not just for rank.

I wanted to prove something.

To myself.

To my teachers.

To everyone who had started doubting me.

I wanted them to believe in me again.

So I started studying.

Slowly at first.

Then harder.

Every day.

I worked on the subjects I was weak in.

Especially Economics.

I knew that if I wanted to improve, I couldn't keep running away from my weakest subject.

I had to face it.

So I did.

I practiced.

I revised.

I solved questions.

I made mistakes.

Then I solved them again.

Slowly...

things started getting better.

My confidence started coming back.

My teachers began noticing the improvement.

I could feel it.

Their attitude toward me started changing.

Not immediately.

Not magically.

But slowly.

One test at a time.

One improvement at a time.

One good answer at a time.

And while I was rebuilding myself...

there was still one thing I couldn't completely stop doing.

Waiting.

Sometimes, after class ended, I would stay outside my classroom.

Not for any particular reason.

At least, that's what I told myself.

But somewhere inside, I knew.

I was waiting for a glimpse of her.

I didn't go to her.

I didn't call her.

I didn't message her.

I didn't try to restart what had ended.

I simply wanted to see her.

Just once.

Even if it was from a distance.

Even if she didn't know I was there.

Sometimes, I would stand outside my classroom and look around.

And if I saw her...

my heart would still react.

It was strange.

I could ignore her.

I could pretend everything was normal.

I could focus on my studies.

But one glimpse of her was enough to remind me that some feelings don't disappear just because you stop talking.

Days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

And slowly...

the final year started coming to an end.

Then one day, I realized something.

Our last day was coming.

The farewell.

The final time we'd all be together as students.

The final day of that chapter of our lives.

I didn't know what I expected.

Maybe nothing.

Maybe I had already convinced myself that I wouldn't talk to her.

Maybe I thought I would simply attend the farewell and leave.

But inside...

I knew I wanted to see her.

One last time.

The day finally arrived.

I got dressed in formal clothes.

I don't know what it was about that day...

but somehow, I looked really good.

Even I had to admit it.

I looked at myself in the mirror.

For a second, I smiled.

Then I thought,

"Of all days..."

I don't know why I cared so much about how I looked.

Maybe because I knew she would be there.

Maybe some part of me still wanted her to notice.

I reached school.

Everyone was there.

The campus felt completely different.

People were dressed differently.

Everyone was excited.

There were smiles everywhere.

People were taking pictures.

Friends were laughing.

Teachers were talking.

Everyone was celebrating the end of an era.

I walked inside.

I didn't pay much attention to anyone.

I simply took a seat.

I sat there quietly and watched the program.

There were speeches.

Performances.

Laughter.

Memories.

Teachers talking about us.

Friends making jokes.

People becoming emotional.

I tried to enjoy everything.

And for a while, I did.

Then I got up to drink water.

I wasn't expecting anything.

I walked toward the water area.

And then...

I saw her.

Payel.

She was wearing a saree.

For a moment, I forgot what I was doing.

I just looked at her.

She looked different.

Not because she had changed completely.

But because I was seeing her in a moment I knew I would never get back.

This was our farewell.

The last day.

Maybe the last time we'd stand in the same place as students.

She noticed me.

And then...

she walked toward me.

My heart started beating faster.

I didn't know what to say.

I didn't know whether I should smile.

Whether I should look away.

Whether I should pretend everything was normal.

But she came closer.

And we talked.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing like the conversations I had imagined in my head.

Just simple things.

"How are you?"

"Fine."

"You're looking good."

"You too."

Small words.

Ordinary words.

But to me...

they weren't ordinary at all.

Because after everything that had happened, we were standing there again.

Talking.

On the last day.

I looked at her.

For a moment, I wanted to say everything.

I wanted to tell her that I had missed her.

That I had waited.

That seeing her again had hurt.

That I had never really stopped caring.

That there were nights when I wondered what would have happened if things had been different.

But I didn't say all of that.

Some feelings are too big for one conversation.

Instead, I said the only thing that felt true.

I looked at her and said,

"Maybe we can't stay together forever..."

I paused.

My voice became quieter.

Then I continued,

"...but I will love you forever from deep down of my heart."

I don't know what she thought when she heard that.

I don't know what she felt.

I didn't ask.

I didn't want to.

Because that moment wasn't about getting an answer.

It was about telling her something I had carried inside for a long time.

I wasn't asking her to come back.

I wasn't asking her to change her mind.

I wasn't asking for another chance.

I was simply telling her the truth.

That even if life took us in different directions...

what I had felt for her had been real.

And some feelings don't disappear just because a relationship ends.

Sometimes they simply become memories.

The conversation ended.

We went our separate ways.

I looked back once.

She was still there.

Then I turned away.

I knew this was probably the last time we'd have a moment like this.

And somehow...

I was okay with it.

Not completely.

But enough.

The farewell ended.

We all left.

And with that...

our school life came to an end.

Another chapter closed.

But my story wasn't over.

After that, I focused on my HS 2nd year exams.

I studied hard.

I didn't want the 28th rank to define me.

I didn't want Economics to remain the subject that controlled my results.

I wanted to prove that I could come back.

So I worked.

Day after day.

Revision after revision.

Practice after practice.

There were difficult days.

There were days when I felt tired.

Days when memories returned.

Days when I missed her.

But I kept going.

Because somewhere along the way, I had learned something important.

You can't always control what happens to you.

You can't control who stays.

You can't control who leaves.

You can't control what people say.

But you can control what you do after everything falls apart.

And I chose to keep moving.

Eventually, the HS 2nd year exams were over.

When the results came...

I opened them with nervous hands.

I looked at the marks.

And for a few seconds, I couldn't say anything.

Then I smiled.

I had done it.

I had scored more than 85%.

After everything...

I had crossed 85%.

The boy who had once fallen to 28th rank.

The boy who had once fallen to 76%

The boy whose teachers had started doubting.

The boy who had struggled with his health.

The boy who had been broken by a girl he loved.

That boy had still managed to stand back up.

I looked at the result again.

I felt proud.

Not because it was the highest mark in the world.

But because I knew what it had taken to get there.

I knew the nights.

The effort.

The failures.

The doubts.

The pain.

The comeback.

Everything was hidden inside that percentage.

I smiled.

For once...

I wasn't trying to prove anything to anyone.

I was proud of myself.

And then, after my HS journey was finally over...

I returned to the dream that had been waiting for me.

The dream I had written in my notebook.

The dream that had once become my escape from heartbreak.

The dream that had slowly become my purpose.

MEXT.

Japan.

A new beginning.

I started preparing seriously.

Books.

Plans.

Research.

Applications.

Goals.

I knew the road ahead wasn't going to be easy.

But I was ready.

Because I wasn't the same person anymore.

I had lost someone.

I had lost confidence.

I had lost ranks.

I had lost health.

I had lost moments I wished I could keep forever.

But I had also gained something.

Strength.

Discipline.

A purpose.

And the ability to stand back up.

Sometimes, people enter your life and stay forever.

Sometimes, they don't.

Sometimes, you love someone and still have to let them go.

And sometimes...

the person you thought was going to be your forever becomes the reason you learned how to walk toward your own future.

I didn't know where life would take me next.

I didn't know whether Payel and I would ever cross paths again.

I didn't know whether Japan was waiting for me.

I didn't know whether MEXT would become reality.

But I knew one thing.

I was going to try.

I was going to give everything I had.

Because after everything I had survived...

I wasn't ready to give up on myself.

And maybe...

that was the real beginning.

Not the beginning of a love story.

Not the beginning of another relationship.

But the beginning of becoming the person I had always wanted to be.

I closed my books after my first day of MEXT preparation.

I looked outside the window.

The sky was slowly getting darker.

I thought about the past.

About the boy I had been.

About the girl I had loved.

About the farewell.

About those final words.

"Maybe we can't stay together forever..."

I smiled sadly.

Maybe we really couldn't.

But somewhere deep inside my heart...

I knew I would always be grateful.

Because once upon a time, there had been a girl who made me believe in forever.

And even though we couldn't reach that forever together...

she had left something behind.

A memory.

A lesson.

A scar.

And a reason to keep moving.

I turned back toward my books.

Japan was waiting.

My future was waiting.

And for the first time...

I was ready to face it.

To be continued...
