Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The morning sun glinted off the glass towers of the city, casting long shadows over the bustling streets.

Avery Madison clutched her portfolio tightly against her chest, her heart hammering as she weaved through the crowd. Today was her chance—her interview at T Company, the prestigious design firm she'd dreamed of joining since she first picked up a paintbrush. She had imagined this moment a thousand times, rehearsed every word, and even pictured the expression of her future boss when he saw her work.

But reality had a way of smashing dreams into chaos.

She rounded a corner, working in haste, her mind on making a good impression so as to get the job, only to freeze as a sleek black car hurtled toward her. Instinctively, she jumped back—but her heel caught on the curb, sending her sprawling.

And then he was there.

Tall. Imposing. Perfectly built. A dark aura seemed to radiate off him like smoke, commanding attention even in the chaos of the city street. Hazel eyes, sharp and piercing, locked onto hers. His gaze was both a warning and a challenge, and for a moment, Avery felt her chest tighten.

"You're insane," he said, his voice low, edged with ice. "Watch where you're going."

Avery, still trying to regain her balance, shot back, heat flaring in her chest. "And you're driving like a maniac. Maybe you should watch where you're going!"

The world seemed to pause. Cars honked in the distance, pedestrians gawked—but neither of them moved. The aura around him was suffocating, yet something about it drew her in.

He tilted his head, studying her as if deciding whether she was worth the trouble. "Bold," he murmured, the corner of his mouth twitching—almost, but not quite, a smile. "I like that. Most people wouldn't dare insult me after nearly getting flattened on the road."

Avery blinked. "Well, maybe most people don't nearly hit someone in the first place."

He stepped closer, the air thickening between them. "Name's Jason T. Scott," he said finally, his voice carrying authority like a whip crack. "And you are…?"

"Avery Madison," she said, standing taller despite the adrenaline still coursing through her veins. "And yes, I almost died this morning, thanks to you."

Jason's gaze softened just enough to make her heart stumble, though his expression quickly hardened again. "Consider this… your warning."

Before she could respond, his attention snapped back to the street, and with a cold nod, he walked away. Avery couldn't help but notice how every movement radiated power, confidence, and a kind of danger that made her pulse quicken.

Shaking off the encounter, she straightened her portfolio and rushed on. She couldn't let a near-death experience—or a dangerously attractive CEO—distract her. Not today.

The doors of T Company gleamed under the fluorescent lobby lights. Avery stepped inside, her nerves threatening to betray her calm exterior. A man approached—tall, perfectly dressed, clipboard in hand.

"Miss Madison?"

"Yes, that's me," Avery replied, her voice firmer than she felt.

"I'm Travis, Mr. Scott's secretary. Right this way."

Her stomach fluttered. The office was sleek, modern, and intimidating. Every inch screamed prestige—and power. As Travis led her down a corridor, she tried to focus on breathing instead of imagining Jason behind the glass doors, watching her every move.

Finally, she reached the office. Travis paused. "Mr. Scott will see you now."

Avery squared her shoulders. She was about to knock when the door swung open—and there he was. Jason T. Scott, sitting behind a massive mahogany desk, hazel eyes assessing her like a predator sizing up its prey.

"You're here," he said flatly, leaning back in his chair. "And you're… exactly what I expected."

Avery blinked, taken aback. "I… I'm sorry, what?"

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he studied her, lips twitching as if holding back a smirk—or a sneer. "Most people stumble in their interviews. You… almost stumbled into my car this morning. Bold and reckless. Maybe reckless enough to work here."

Heat rose to her cheeks. She swallowed, trying to match his intensity. "Well, I am good at art," she said, tilting her head. "And I don't back down from a challenge. So… maybe I fit in here more than you think."

For a long moment, Jason said nothing. Then, he leaned forward, resting his arms on the desk. "You're… hired."

Avery froze. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me," he said, his voice sharp, commanding. "Hired. Now get out of my office before I change my mind."

Avery blinked again, utterly dumbfounded. She had not expected this. The audacity, the power, the… magnetism—it was overwhelming. She wanted to argue, refuse, even run, but something deep inside told her to stay. To play the game.

And thus began a war neither of them knew they were about to fight: a collision of hearts, wills, and desires that neither could escape.
