Chapter 8 - The Decision

Sophie sat in Adrian's office three days after Catherine tried to kill her and stared at a legal document that would change everything.

Her hands shook as she read it. Not from fear. From the weight of what signing it would mean.

"You don't have to do this," Adrian said. He stood by the window watching her. Giving her space to decide. "The six-month contract stands. You can still walk away when the time comes."

Sophie looked at the document. It wasn't a contract. It was a partnership agreement. Making her an equal owner in Ashford Legal Consulting. The legitimate front company that managed all the family's operations.

But more than that, it was a declaration. Sophie wouldn't just be helping Adrian. She'd be complicit. A full partner in everything the Ashfords did. Legal and illegal.

"If I sign this, there's no going back," Sophie said. "I can't pretend I'm just a contract wife anymore. I can't claim I didn't know what was happening. This makes me guilty."

"Yes."

"The FBI could arrest me. I could lose my law license permanently. I could go to prison."

"Yes."

"Then why are you asking me to sign?"

Adrian moved closer. Sat down across from her. "Because I want you to choose this. Not because you're trapped. Not because you have no other options. I want you to choose me. Choose this life. Choose us. With full knowledge of what it costs."

Sophie thought about the last few weeks. The work she'd done restructuring Ashford operations. The files she'd reviewed. The loopholes she'd found. She'd been telling herself she was just surviving. Just doing what was necessary to protect her parents.

But that was a lie. She loved the work. Loved the challenge. Loved being the smartest person in the room. Loved working beside Adrian and watching him see her as an equal.

She'd been pretending she was different from Marcus Webb. Pretending she had principles. But the truth was simpler and more terrifying.

Sophie liked power. She liked using her brilliant mind for something that mattered. And she liked the man sitting across from her more than she liked being good.

"If I sign this, what changes?" Sophie asked.

"Everything. You'll have full access to all operations. All files. All accounts. You'll work with me restructuring the entire empire. Making it legally untouchable. You'll be my partner in every sense of the word."

"And us? What are we?"

"Whatever you want us to be. But Sophie, understand this. If you sign, I'm never letting you go. Not in six months. Not ever. You'll be mine. Completely."

Sophie should have been insulted by the possessiveness. Should have told him people aren't property.

Instead, she felt something warm spread through her chest. Because Adrian wasn't trying to control her. He was telling her the truth. He'd fight to keep her. He'd burn the world down to protect her. He'd never let her face anything alone.

Sophie picked up the pen. Signed her name.

The moment the ink dried, Adrian pulled her across the desk and kissed her. Not gently. Not carefully. He kissed her like she was his and he was never letting go.

"Mine," Adrian whispered against her lips. "You're mine now."

"Yours," Sophie agreed. "Completely."

They were so focused on each other they didn't hear Adrian's phone ring. Didn't notice James burst into the office until he was right there.

"Boss, we have a problem. A big one."

Adrian pulled back. "What happened?"

"Thomas Kane. The crime boss you helped get released six weeks ago. He's been arrested again. This time for murder. And the prosecutor is using evidence that came from our files. Someone leaked our work to the authorities."

Sophie's blood ran cold. "That's impossible. Only three people had access to that case. You, me, and Adrian."

"Four people," James corrected. "Catherine reviewed those files three days ago. Right before she tried to kill Sophie. She downloaded them to an external drive."

Adrian stood slowly. "My mother is feeding information to prosecutors?"

"It looks that way. She's been meeting with someone from the FBI. We have surveillance photos from yesterday. She's cooperating with them."

Sophie felt the room tilt. Catherine wasn't just trying to eliminate Sophie. She was trying to take down the entire Ashford empire. Burn it all down to save her sons from themselves.

"How bad is it?" Adrian asked. His voice was deadly calm.

"Bad. If Catherine testifies, if she turns over all the files she's accessed, half the family goes to prison. Including you. Including Sophie now that she just signed that partnership agreement."

Sophie looked at the document she'd signed two minutes ago. The document that made her a target. Made her guilty. Made her someone the FBI would want behind bars.

"We need to stop her," Sophie said. "Before she destroys everything."

"How? She's my mother. I can't—" Adrian stopped. Looked at Sophie. "What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking Catherine made a mistake. She went to the FBI but she doesn't understand how federal immunity deals work. She thinks they'll protect her family in exchange for testimony. But that's not how it works. They'll use her to destroy everyone. Including her."

"You want to warn her?"

"I want to show her what she's actually done. Show her the FBI is playing her. Maybe she'll reconsider." Sophie grabbed her coat. "Where is she now?"

"Safe house in Queens. Under FBI protection."

"Then we go to Queens. Tonight."

Two hours later, Sophie and Adrian stood outside a house in a quiet neighborhood. FBI agents were visible inside. Catherine was in there. Building a case that would destroy her own family.

"This is insane," Adrian said. "We can't just walk up to an FBI safe house."

"Watch me."

Sophie walked to the front door. Knocked. An agent answered.

"I'm Sophie Chen. Catherine Ashford's daughter-in-law. I need to speak with her. It's urgent."

"Ma'am, you can't—"

"Tell her it's about the immunity deal. Tell her I know about the clause in section seven. The one that voids protection if any family member is convicted of additional crimes while she's cooperating. Tell her Brandon just got charged with attempted murder of a federal witness. That voids her deal. She's exposed now. No protection."

The agent's face went white. He spoke into his radio. Thirty seconds later, Catherine appeared in the doorway.

She looked older. Tired. Defeated.

"Sophie. Adrian. What are you doing here?"

"Saving you from yourself," Sophie said. "The FBI deal you signed? It's worthless now. Brandon's new charges void your immunity. You're vulnerable. They can prosecute you for everything you've told them. You played yourself."

Catherine's face crumbled. "That's not possible. They promised—"

"They lied. That's what prosecutors do. They use people and discard them. You should know that. You've been pretending not to see it for thirty years."

Catherine looked at Adrian. "I was trying to save you. Save the family from this life."

"By destroying us?" Adrian's voice was cold. "By sending us all to prison?"

"By giving you a chance to walk away. To be legitimate. To be free." Catherine's voice broke. "I've watched this family destroy itself for three generations. I thought if I could end it, if I could force you all to face consequences, maybe you'd finally stop."

"Mom, I don't want to stop. This is who I am. This is what I've built. And Sophie is helping me make it better. Stronger. More protected than Dad ever made it." Adrian moved closer. "You can either accept that and come home. Or you can testify and watch us all go to prison. Including yourself. Your choice."

Catherine looked between them. At Adrian who'd chosen power. At Sophie who'd chosen him. At the impossible situation she'd created.

"I can't watch you destroy yourselves," Catherine whispered.

"Then don't watch," Sophie said. "But don't destroy us either. Because Adrian is brilliant. I'm brilliant. Together we're building something that can't be touched. Something that's actually sustainable. Let us try."

Catherine was quiet for a long moment. Then she turned to the FBI agents. "I'd like to recant my statement. Everything I said was coerced. I was traumatized after being kidnapped. I'm not cooperating anymore."

The agents looked furious. Threatened consequences. Promised prosecution.

Catherine walked past them. Walked out the door. Stood beside her son and the woman he loved.

"I hope you know what you're doing," Catherine said.

"We do," Sophie replied. "Trust us."

They drove back to Manhattan in silence. When they reached the penthouse, Catherine went to her room. Locked the door. Left Sophie and Adrian alone.

Adrian pulled Sophie close. "You just saved my mother from federal prison."

"I saved all of us. Including myself."

"Why? After what she did to you?"

"Because she's your mother. Because family matters. Because I understand why she did it. She was scared. People do terrible things when they're scared."

Adrian kissed her forehead. "I love you. Have I mentioned that recently?"

"Not in the last three hours."

"I love you. Completely. Impossibly. In ways that terrify me."

Sophie smiled. "I love you too."

Adrian's phone buzzed. He checked it. His expression changed. Went cold.

"What is it?" Sophie asked.

"Thomas Kane. He just made bail. Posted by an anonymous benefactor. And his lawyer just filed a motion to sue us for providing false information that led to his wrongful arrest."

"He's coming after us."

"Worse. He's coming after you specifically. The motion names you as the attorney who provided the flawed analysis. Claims you deliberately sabotaged his case. He's seeking damages. Criminal charges. Everything."

Sophie felt ice spread through her veins. Thomas Kane was a crime boss with connections everywhere. If he wanted revenge, he'd get it.

"This isn't about money," Sophie realized. "This is about sending a message. He's showing other families that the Ashfords can be touched. That I can be touched."

"Then we send a message back. Nobody touches what's mine."

Adrian made a call. Spoke in rapid Mandarin. When he hung up, his expression was grim.

"What did you do?" Sophie asked.

"I called in every favor I have. Every alliance. Every connection. Thomas Kane wanted war. He's going to get war."

Sophie should have been scared. Should have told Adrian to stand down. Should have tried to de-escalate.

Instead, she felt something else. Something dark and powerful and absolutely certain.

She was done running. Done being scared. Done letting people threaten her.

If Thomas Kane wanted to destroy her, he'd have to go through Adrian first.

And Adrian didn't lose.
