Chapter 1 - Two Hearts, One Broken Life

Washington DC didn't sleep.

The city glowed in gold and white lights, luxury cars sliding through clean streets, glass buildings shining like silent giants. But inside a small, old apartment on the edge of the city, a different world existed — quiet, warm, fragile.

Suzan sat on the edge of the bed, holding her phone.

The screen was dark.

No notifications.

No missed calls.

No messages.

Just silence.

Behind her, Zachary stood by the small window, looking out at the city skyline. The light from the streetlamps reflected on his face, soft and tired. He had just returned from work — another long day, another low-paying job, another tired smile.

He didn't complain.

He never did.

"Did you eat?" he asked gently.

Suzan shook her head. "Not hungry."

He walked to the small table, picked up a plastic bag, and brought out takeout food.

Cheap food. The kind they always bought.

"I saved this for you."

She forced a small smile. "Thank you."

But her heart wasn't in it.

Suzan looked around the room — the cracked walls, the old furniture, the weak light bulb, the thin curtains. She had lived here with him for two years. Two years of love. Two years of struggle. Two years of dreaming.

But dreams don't pay bills.

Outside, she saw a luxury car drive past the window.

Her chest tightened.

"Zachary…" she said quietly.

"Yes?" He sat beside her.

She hesitated.

Her voice shook. "Do you think… our life will ever change?"

He smiled softly. "Of course. Everything changes. We just have to be patient."

Patient.

That word again.

She looked at his hands — rough from work, tired from struggle, gentle when they touched her.

"You don't even know who your parents are," she whispered.

He paused.

"I don't need to know," he said calmly. "You're my family."

Her eyes filled with tears.

Not because he was wrong.

But because love wasn't enough anymore.

Silence filled the room.

The kind of silence that breaks hearts before words do.

Suzan stood up slowly.

"Zachary… I'm tired."

He looked up at her. "Tired of what?"

"Tired of struggling. Tired of waiting. Tired of dreaming without results."

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not shouting.

Just pain.

"I love you," he said quietly.

Her tears fell.

"I love you too," she whispered.

"But love isn't saving us."

The city lights outside kept shining.

Inside, two hearts began to break.
