Chapter 5 - ###CHAPTER FIVE: When Lines Are Crossed

The first threat came disguised as concern.

"Aria, the department head wants to see you," a class rep told me after my afternoon lecture. "Something about your scholarship."

My stomach tightened.

My scholarship was my lifeline. Tuition. Accommodation. Everything.

Without it, I had nothing.

I didn't tell Ethan.

I didn't tell Dominic.

I went alone.

The office was dimmer than usual. The blinds half-drawn. The department head sat behind his desk, fingers steepled, eyes roaming in a way that immediately made my skin crawl.

"Miss Blake," he said slowly. "You've been getting… special attention lately."

"I don't understand," I replied, standing straight.

He leaned back. "A powerful investor. A billionaire. Men like that don't hover around students without reason."

My chest burned. "My personal life has nothing to do with my academics."

He smiled thinly. "It does when it affects the institution's reputation."

That's when I knew.

This wasn't concern.

It was leverage.

"You wouldn't want rumors to affect your scholarship," he continued. "Unless, of course, you're willing to be… cooperative."

My heart slammed violently against my ribs.

"I'm leaving," I said, turning toward the door.

"You should think carefully," he warned. "Girls like you don't get many chances."

I walked out shaking.

I didn't make it ten steps down the hallway before Dominic appeared.

Not walked.

Appeared.

His presence swallowed the corridor. Two men in suits stood at either end, sealing it off.

"Who were you meeting?" Dominic asked calmly.

"I" My voice broke. "I'm fine."

His eyes softened for exactly half a second.

Then he saw my hands trembling.

"Get in the car," he said quietly.

"I don't need"

"That," he interrupted, voice turning lethal, "was not a request."

I told him everything.

Every word. Every look. Every threat.

Dominic didn't interrupt. He didn't react.

That was worse.

By the time I finished, his jaw was locked so tight I thought it might crack.

"You should have told me," he said.

"I didn't want you to"

"Do what?" he asked softly. "Protect you?"

"This is what I meant," I whispered. "This is where it becomes dangerous."

He reached out finally touching me cupping my cheek with terrifying gentleness.

"Aria," he said quietly, "it was dangerous the moment he thought he could touch what belongs to no one."

That night, the department head resigned.

By morning, the university issued a formal apology.

By noon, my scholarship was upgraded.

No rumors.

No threats.

Just silence.

Powerful, terrifying silence.

Ethan found out anyway.

He showed up outside my dorm, eyes bloodshot, voice hoarse.

"You didn't tell me," he said. "You didn't trust me."

"I didn't want to drag you into it."

"You didn't want him to know," Ethan snapped. "Because you're choosing him."

"I didn't choose anyone," I said, tears spilling. "I was scared."

He stepped closer, desperation raw and unfiltered.

"I would have protected you," he pleaded. "I love you, Aria. I've always loved you."

The words hit harder than I expected.

"I know," I whispered.

"That should be enough."

"It should," I said. "But it's not."

His face crumpled.

"You look at him like the world makes sense," Ethan said bitterly. "And you look at me like you're apologizing."

I couldn't deny it.

Behind him, a familiar black car idled.

Dominic watched from a distance.

Waiting.

Not intervening.

That hurt more than his dominance ever could.

Ethan leaned down, forehead pressing against mine.

"If you walk toward him," he whispered, voice breaking, "I don't know how to survive that."

My heart shattered.

"I never wanted to hurt you," I said.

"But you are," he replied.

I stepped back.

Not toward Dominic.

But away from Ethan.

The choice was already written.

Later that night, Dominic stood at my door.

"I didn't come to claim you," he said quietly. "I came to give you space."

I laughed shakily. "You don't do space."

"Not well," he admitted. "But I can learn for you."

Silence stretched between us.

"I'm scared of you," I confessed. "Of how safe you make me feel. Of how easily I could disappear into your world."

He stepped closer but stopped himself.

"I won't cage you," he said. "But I will stand between you and anything that tries to break you."

My voice shook. "And if I fall?"

His eyes burned.

"Then I fall with you."

I didn't kiss him.

That would have ended everything.

Instead, I reached for his hand.

And he let me.

Somewhere on campus, Ethan was learning that love doesn't always lose because it's weak

Sometimes it loses because it's late.

And this

this was only the beginning.
