Jay spent the first three days doing nothing.
Not because Roman told him to. Roman had suggested rest exactly once, in the careful tone he used when he was trying not to sound like he was giving an order, and Jay had said yes fine and then spent the next six hours rearranging things in the kitchen that didn't need rearranging.
Roman came home at seven that evening and stood in the kitchen doorway looking at the new arrangement of his cupboards.
"I organized by category," Jay said without turning around.
"I noticed."
"The previous system made no sense."
"The previous system was mine."
"Exactly." Jay turned and handed him a cup of tea. "You're welcome."
Roman took the tea. Looked at the cupboards again. Looked at Jay.
"The spices were alphabetical," Roman said.
"Nobody uses spices alphabetically. You use them by cuisine."
"I use them by preference."
