Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The party

The café felt too bright, too loud, and too full of people living normal Saturday afternoons while Aria's world collapsed.

Ryan had just walked away. Out the door. And out of her life..

Eight months of their relationship was over. Because she wouldn't sleep with him..

She sat frozen at their table, her untouched latte going cold, as she was trying to process what had just happened..

Her phone buzzed..

It was Sophia..

Jake's party tonight! Nine PM. You're coming. Non-negotiable. It's your BIRTHDAY!

Aria stared at the message. Going home meant facing Victoria's cold indifference and Melissa's inevitable mockery when they found out about the breakup. And they would find out. Because Ryan would make sure everyone knew..

Her fingers moved almost on autopilot.

What time?

The response from Sophia was immediate.

YES! Picking you up at nine. Wear something cute!

Cute. Right. Because her wardrobe was overflowing with options...

That evening, Sophia's car pulled up at exactly nine o'clock, with music blasting out..

Aria climbed in wearing the only decent dress she owned—a simple navy blue dress Sophia had given her last year.

"You look amazing!" Sophia said, then her expression shifted. "Wait. You've been crying. What happened?"

The story spilled out. The café. Ryan's speech about wanting more and the humiliation of being dumped in public..

Sophia's hands tightened on the steering wheel. "That absolute *ssh*l*. On your birthday?"

"He said we want different things."Aria told her.

"What he means is he's an entitled prick who can't handle a woman with boundaries." Sophia glanced at her. "You know what? We're going to this party, you're going to have fun, and Ryan Cooper can go to hell."...

Jake Morrison's house was already packed when they arrived. Music pounded through the walls, and people spilled onto the lawn despite the October chill..

Inside was chaos—students everywhere, red cups, laughter, and dancing. Aria had never been to a party like this. She'd always been too busy working, studying, surviving..

"Stay close," Sophia said, linking their arms. "We'll grab drinks, find a corner, and you can people-watch in peace."

They'd been there less than fifteen minutes when Aria saw him..

Ryan..

He was in the living room, leaning against the wall with a blonde girl from their Psychology class pressed against him. Her hand was on his chest and he was smiling down at her with the same smile he used to give Aria..

The same smile he'd given her this morning when he texted about having a surprise..

Aria's stomach dropped..

"Oh, hell no," Sophia breathed, following her gaze.

As if sensing her stare, Ryan looked up, and their eyes met across the crowded room..

For a second, guilt flickered across his face. Then the blonde said something, and he looked back down at her, dismissing Aria completely.

He leaned down and kissed her..

The same mouth that had said "I love you" just yesterday was now on someone else..

"We're leaving," Sophia said firmly, already pulling her toward the door.

"No."Aria interjected.

"Aria—"Sophia said surprised.

"I'm not running away." She pulled her arm free. "I just need air. Some space. Please."Aria told her in a whisper..

"Okay. But I'm coming with you."Sophia said with finality in her voice...

They pushed through to the back door. Outside, the noise faded to a dull roar. A few people stood around a firepit, but most of the backyard was empty..

Aria wrapped her arms around herself. The October air was cold against her bare arms, but she welcomed it. Clarifying her mind..

"You okay?" Sophia asked gently.

"No. But I will be."Aria responded..

"Want to leave? We can go get ice cream, and watch terrible movies—"

"Actually..." Aria pulled out her phone. "Remember that new lounge that opened downtown? The Skyline?"

"The upscale one? Your cousin works there, right?"

"Yeah. She can get us in. What do you say? Somewhere that's definitely not a college party?"

Sophia studied her face. "You sure?"

"I don't want to go home. And I definitely don't want to be here. So yeah. Let's go somewhere different."

"Then let's get out of here."...

The Skyline Lounge was nothing like Jake's party..

It was elegant, sophisticated, with dim lighting and a wall of windows showcasing the Manhattan skyline. Well-dressed professionals talked quietly over cocktails. The music was soft jazz, not pounding bass..

Aria felt completely out of place in her simple dress.

Sophia's cousin got them a table near the windows. The view was breathtaking—the city spread out like a constellation of lights.

"Better?" Sophia asked.

"So much better."Aria responded energetically...

A server appeared, and Sophia ordered something Aria had never heard of. When it arrived in a elegant glass, Aria took a careful sip. It was sweet with an undertone of alcohol..

"Go slow," Sophia warned. "You've never really drunk before."

Aria nodded, setting the glass down. She didn't want to get drunk. She just wanted to feel something other than heartbreak..

They sat for a while, watching the city. Aria found herself relaxing for the first time all day..

"I need some air," she said eventually, standing. "Real air. Is there a terrace?"

"Through those doors." Sophia pointed. "Want me to come?"

"No, I'll just be a minute. I need to think."

Outside on the terrace, the October night wrapped around her. The city noise was a distant hum. A few other people stood at the railing, but there was space, and privacy.

Aria leaned against the railing and closed her eyes.

How had everything fallen apart so fast?

This morning she'd thought she was loved. Now she knew the truth—she was just something to pass the time.

"Beautiful view, is it not?."

Aria turned.

A man stood a few feet away. Tall, dark-haired, with sharp features, while wearing an expensive suit that fit him perfectly. There was something commanding about his presence, like he was used to being the most important person in any room..

And he was, without question, the most handsome man she'd ever seen.

"It is," she agreed quietly, before turning back to the skyline.

"You look like you're carrying the weight of the world."

She laughed bitterly. "Just a very bad day."

"Want to talk about it?" He moved closer to the railing, while maintaining a respectful distance..

"Not particularly." She glanced at him. "Don't you have somewhere more important to be? You don't look like someone who makes small talk with sad strangers."

"Maybe I'm exactly that type." A slight smile touched his lips. "And you don't look like the type to be alone on a Friday night looking heartbroken."

Heat rushed to her cheeks. "Is it that obvious?"

"Only to someone paying attention."

They stood in comfortable silence. Aria knew she should go back inside to Sophia, but something about this stranger's presence was... calming.

"Bad breakup?" he asked gently.

"The worst." The alcohol had loosened her tongue just enough. "My boyfriend, sorry—ex-boyfriend—broke up with me this afternoon. At a café. On my birthday. Because I wouldn't sleep with him."

"Then he's an idiot."The man said.

The certainty in his voice surprised her. "You don't even know me."

"I know enough. Anyone who would make you feel like you're not worth waiting for doesn't deserve you."

Aria's breath caught. No one had ever said anything like that to her before.

"What's your name?" she asked softly.

He hesitated, then said, "Damien."

"I'm Aria."She told him.

"Aria," he repeated, and the way he said it made her name sound…precious.

They talked. About the city, about books, about the strange loneliness of being surrounded by people. He asked about her studies, her dreams. She found herself opening up in a way she never had with Ryan.

Maybe because this man was a stranger and it didn't matter.

Or maybe because he listened like her words actually meant something.

"I should get back to my friend," Aria said finally, though she didn't want to move.

"Should you?"Damien asked, his eyes locked on her's..

There was something in the way he asked that made her pause.

"I don't know what I want anymore," she admitted. "I thought I had everything figured out. And it all fell apart in one afternoon."

"Maybe it fell apart because it wasn't meant to be," Damien said quietly. "Maybe you're meant for something better."

"Or maybe I'm just not good enough for anything."

"Stop." The command in his voice made her look up. His eyes had gone hard. "Don't let him make you question your worth. You're not the problem, Aria. He is."

She wanted to believe him.

"You don't know me," she whispered.

"Then let me." He stepped closer. "Have dinner with me tomorrow. Let me show you that not all men are like whoever broke your heart."

This was crazy. She'd just met him. She didn't even know his last name..

But maybe that was exactly why she should say yes..

"Okay," she breathed..

His smile transformed his face. "I'll pick you up at seven. Give me your number."

She recited it, and watching as he entered it into his phone..

"Go back to your friend," he said gently. "I'll text you tomorrow with details."

She nodded and turned to leave..

"Aria?"

She looked back..

"Happy birthday. I hope the rest of your year is better than today was."...

Inside, Sophia took one look at her face and squealed.

"What happened? You look flushed!"

"I have a date tomorrow."Aria announced..

"With who?"Sophia asked..

"A man named Damien."Aria told her..

She didn't know his last name. She didn't know what he did. And she didn't know anything except that he'd made her feel seen..

It should have terrified her..

But instead, it felt like hope.
