Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Stranger’s Secret

The train rushed forward, cutting through the silent darkness of the night. Outside the window, city lights slowly disappeared, replaced by endless shadows and empty fields.

Maya wrapped her coat tighter around herself. The cold air inside the compartment made her uneasy. It wasn't just the weather — something about this journey felt strange.

She glanced around.

Only a few passengers remained. Some were half asleep, while others stared blankly at their phones. The quiet atmosphere made every sound louder — the wheels scraping against the tracks, the faint hum of electricity, and her own racing heartbeat.

Across from her sat the man dressed entirely in black.

He hadn't moved since she entered the train.

His posture was calm, almost too perfect. One hand rested casually on his knee while his sharp eyes seemed fixed somewhere beyond her — or maybe directly at her.

Maya quickly looked away.

Why does he feel so familiar?

She was certain she had never met him before, yet an unexplainable feeling lingered in her mind.

The train suddenly passed through a tunnel, and darkness swallowed the compartment for a moment. When the lights returned, Maya noticed the man looking straight at her.

Their eyes met.

She felt her breath stop.

"Late night journey?" he asked softly.

His voice was deep and steady, carrying an odd warmth.

Maya hesitated before answering.

"Yes… I almost missed the last train."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"People who board the last train," he said, "are usually running away from something… or moving toward something important."

His words caught her off guard.

Maya forced a small laugh. "You sound like you know everyone's story."

"Not everyone," he replied calmly. "Only yours."

Her smile faded instantly.

Before she could respond, the train gave a violent jerk.

The lights flickered once… twice… then turned dim.

Passengers murmured nervously.

The train slowed down and finally stopped in the middle of nowhere.

Maya looked outside the window.

There was nothing.

No station.

No lights.

Only darkness stretching endlessly.

"What happened?" someone whispered from the back.

The announcement system remained silent.

Maya felt a chill run down her spine.

Then she noticed something even stranger.

The man across from her looked completely relaxed — as if he had expected this.

"You're not surprised?" Maya asked.

He turned toward her slowly.

"This moment was bound to happen."

Her heartbeat quickened. "What do you mean?"

The man leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice.

"This train changes people's lives."

Maya frowned. "How do you know that?"

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered—

"Because this isn't our first meeting."

Maya froze.

Her mind raced, searching for memories, faces, moments… but nothing appeared.

"I think you're mistaken," she said nervously.

The man's eyes softened.

"No," he replied quietly. "You just don't remember yet."

At that exact moment, the lights went out completely.

Darkness filled the compartment.

Gasps echoed around them.

And somewhere in that darkness… Maya felt someone standing very close to her.

When the lights came back on—

The seat across from her was empty.

The mysterious stranger had disappeared.
