Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1 : The Job That Paid Too Much

The Job That Knew My Name

The email arrived while I was deleting another rejection.

Same sentence.Different company.Different lie.

We regret to inform you—

I didn't finish reading it.

That's when the new message appeared.

No sender name.No logo.

Just a subject line that made my breath stop.

We found you.

I stared at the screen, my fingers cold.

I hadn't applied anywhere new.

I opened it anyway.

You don't need an interview. You don't need experience. You only need to follow the rules.

Below it was a number.

Too many zeros.

I laughed once. Loud. Broken.

Then my phone buzzed.

Bank Alert: Deposit Received.

The laugh died in my throat.

The building was taller than anything around it.

Glass. Steel. Silent.

The guard at the entrance didn't ask for my ID.

He just nodded.

"Welcome back," he said.

I stopped walking.

"Sorry?"

But he was already looking past me, like the conversation had ended years ago.

The elevator doors closed without me pressing a button.

Penthouse.

My ears popped as we rose.

I don't remember getting the key.

I just remember the door opening.

The apartment smelled… lived in.

Not stale.Not new.

Like someone had just stepped out.

Furniture arranged perfectly.Lights dimmed to a familiar warmth.

Too familiar.

On the table sat an envelope.

My name written neatly across the front.

My handwriting.

My stomach twisted.

Inside was a single page.

RULES

The cameras are always on.

Do not test them.

Lights out at 12:00 a.m.

Sleep alone.

If you hear breathing—do not respond.

I read rule five three times.

A soft click echoed above me.

I looked up.

A camera blinked red.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown Number:You still read the rules first. Good.

My knees went weak.

I hadn't given anyone my number.

I hadn't told anyone I was here.

Slowly, I typed back.

Who are you?

The typing bubble appeared.

Stopped.

Then vanished.

Instead, another bank alert arrived.

Double the amount.

And one final message.

Unpack. You're home.
