Chapter 1: Scratch

---

The extra-ordinary person named Kenta Morik was impressive despite having good looks and a sharp mind.

He came with a scholarship despite having a poor family, using scraps to survive. He lived alone in a hostel, following his dream to become an engineer. His family's poor condition was a secret he kept from the whole school. Everyone believed he had a decent family.

He studied in a Japanese high school, placed at the top of Class 1-A since his first year. As any introvert dreams, his goal was simple: do not fall in love, complete his course, and work hard to feed his family.

He was also ambidextrous—able to write perfectly with both hands. This rare skill made him stand out even more. In the whole school, only two people possessed this skill. The other was a girl from Class 1-B.

---

[Scene: Class 1-A - Morning]

Tanaka sensei: "Morik."

(The class falls silent.)

Tanaka sensei: "Solve it."

(He writes on the board:)

[Question 1: Algebra - Complex Numbers]

Find all complex solutions to the equation:

z⁶ + 2z³ + 2 = 0

Express answers in polar form and plot them on the complex plane.

Sato Haruki: (whispering) "Sixth degree?! We haven't even covered fourth degree..."

Watanabe Yuto: (whispering) "And polar form? That's next semester!"

Ito Rena: (whispering) "There's no way..."

(Kenta looks up from his notebook. His pen—held in his left hand today—stops moving.)

(He stands. Walks to the board. Takes the chalk.)

Kenta: (muttering) "Let u = z³... then u² + 2u + 2 = 0..."

(His left hand moves across the board in clean, elegant strokes.)

Kenta: (writing) "u = [-2 ± √(4-8)]/2 = [-2 ± √(-4)]/2 = [-2 ± 2i]/2 = -1 ± i"

Kenta: (continuing) "So z³ = -1 + i and z³ = -1 - i"

Kenta: (writing rapidly) "|-1 + i| = √2, arg = 3π/4"

Kenta: "|-1 - i| = √2, arg = 5π/4"

Kenta: "Therefore: z = ∛√2 · e^(i(3π/4 + 2πk)/3) for k=0,1,2"

Kenta: "And: z = ∛√2 · e^(i(5π/4 + 2πk)/3) for k=0,1,2"

Kenta: (turning around) "Six solutions. Done."

Ito Rena: (whispering) "He's not even hesitating..."

Nakamoto Kai: (whispering) "What the hell..."

(Ten seconds passed.)

Tanaka sensei: (adjusting glasses) "That's... correct. But Morik..."

Tanaka sensei: "Since you're so fast, try this one."

(He erases the board and writes a new question. The class gasps.)

[Question 2: Astronomy - Orbital Mechanics]

A newly discovered exoplanet orbits its star in an elliptical orbit with semi-major axis a = 1.5 × 10⁸ km and eccentricity e = 0.4. The star's mass is 1.2 × 10³⁰ kg.

Calculate:

1. The planet's orbital period in Earth years.

2. Its maximum and minimum orbital velocities.

3. The time it spends in the "habitable zone" if the zone extends from 0.8a to 1.2a from the star.

(G = 6.67 × 10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg², 1 Earth year = 3.15 × 10⁷ seconds)

Sato Haruki: (whispering) "What... what is that?"

Watanabe Yuto: (whispering) "This isn't even in our curriculum!"

Ito Rena: (whispering) "Astronomy? We're in math class!"

Nakamoto Kai: (whispering) "Tanaka sensei's trying to break him..."

Tanaka sensei: (smiling slightly) "Well, Morik? Astronomy is just algebra with extra steps."

(Kenta stares at the board for exactly three seconds. Then switches chalk to his right hand.)

Kenta: (muttering) "Kepler's Third Law... T² = (4π²/GM)a³..."

(His right hand flies across the board.)

Kenta: (writing) "T = 2π√(a³/GM)"

Kenta: "a = 1.5 × 10¹¹ m (converting to meters)"

Kenta: "a³ = 3.375 × 10³³ m³"

Kenta: "GM = (6.67 × 10⁻¹¹)(1.2 × 10³⁰) = 8.004 × 10¹⁹"

Kenta: "a³/GM = (3.375 × 10³³)/(8.004 × 10¹⁹) = 4.216 × 10¹³"

Kenta: "√(a³/GM) = 6.493 × 10⁶"

Kenta: "T = 2π(6.493 × 10⁶) = 4.08 × 10⁷ seconds"

Kenta: "In Earth years: (4.08 × 10⁷)/(3.15 × 10⁷) = 1.3 Earth years"

Kenta: (continuing without pause) "For velocities: v_max = √(GM(1+e)/a(1-e))"

Kenta: "v_min = √(GM(1-e)/a(1+e))"

Kenta: "At perihelion: r_min = a(1-e) = 9 × 10¹⁰ m"

Kenta: "At aphelion: r_max = a(1+e) = 2.1 × 10¹¹ m"

Kenta: "v_max = √((8.004 × 10¹⁹)(1.4)/(9 × 10¹⁰ × 0.6))"

Kenta: "= √((1.12056 × 10²⁰)/(5.4 × 10¹⁰))"

Kenta: "= √(2.075 × 10⁹) = 45,550 m/s = 45.55 km/s"

Kenta: "v_min = √((8.004 × 10¹⁹)(0.6)/(2.1 × 10¹¹ × 1.4))"

Kenta: "= √((4.8024 × 10¹⁹)/(2.94 × 10¹¹))"

Kenta: "= √(1.633 × 10⁸) = 12,780 m/s = 12.78 km/s"

Kenta: "For habitable zone time: Using Kepler's Second Law..."

Kenta: "The fraction of orbital period spent between true anomalies θ₁ and θ₂ is (θ₂ - θ₁ - e(sin θ₂ - sin θ₁))/2π"

Kenta: "From earlier calculations, the planet enters habitable zone at θ₁ = 1.445 rad and exits at θ₂ = 2.094 rad"

Kenta: "Fraction = (2.094 - 1.445 - 0.4(sin 2.094 - sin 1.445))/2π"

Kenta: "= (0.649 - 0.4(0.866 - 0.992))/2π"

Kenta: "= (0.649 - 0.4(-0.126))/2π"

Kenta: "= (0.649 + 0.0504)/2π"

Kenta: "= 0.6994/2π = 0.1113"

Kenta: "Time in habitable zone = 0.1113 × 1.3 years = 0.145 Earth years = 53 days"

Kenta: (turning around) "Done."

(Dead silence fills the classroom.)

Tanaka sensei: (staring at the board, then at Kenta) "Morik... this is university-level astrophysics. How...?"

Kenta: "I read ahead."

Tanaka sensei: (removing his glasses and wiping them) "In twenty years of teaching... I've never seen anything like it."

Suzuki Mei: (whispering loudly) "That's so hot."

Yamamoto Aiko: (kicking her chair) "Mei! Shut up!"

Suzuki Mei: "What?! It IS!"

(Kenta walks back to his seat and picks up his pen like nothing happened.)

Tanaka sensei: (quietly, to himself) "That boy will either become a great engineer... or burn out before graduation."

---

[Scene: School Hallways - Throughout the Day]

(Whispers follow him everywhere.)

Kimura Mio: "That's him. Kenta Morik."

Sasaki Yuna: "He's even better looking up close..."

Inoue Mei: "Did you hear what he did in Tanaka's class today?"

Kato Airi: "My heart literally stopped when he walked past."

---

[Scene: Kenta's Desk - After School]

(Kenta arrives at his desk to find three love letters and two lunch invitations.)

Kenta: (staring at them) "...Again?"

(He puts them all in his bag without reading.)

Takahashi Kenji: (appearing out of nowhere) "Dude! Are you seriously not going to read those?!"

Kenta: "No."

Takahashi Kenji: "But there are THREE! And lunch invitations! Girls are literally throwing themselves at you!"

Kenta: "I have to study."

Takahashi Kenji: "You ALWAYS have to study!"

Kenta: "Exactly."

Takahashi Kenji: (grabbing his shoulders) "Kenta. Look at me. Do you even LIKE girls?"

Kenta: "I like passing my exams."

Takahashi Kenji: (screaming internally) "THAT'S NOT THE SAME THING!"

(Kenta picks up his textbook and walks away.)

Takahashi Kenji: (watching him go) "That guy... is either a robot or a legend. I haven't decided which."

---

[Scene: School Rooftop - Same Afternoon]

(Kenta sits alone on the rooftop, reading a textbook. The door opens behind him.)

(Footsteps. Someone walks out.)

Kenta: (not looking up) "This is my spot."

(Pause. The footsteps stop.)

Mystery Girl: (soft voice) "Oh. Sorry. I didn't know anyone was here."

Kenta: "I study here every day."

Mystery Girl: "I just wanted some fresh air. I can leave if—"

Kenta: (still not looking up) "It's fine. Just don't be loud."

Mystery Girl: "...Okay."

(She sits on the other side of the rooftop, far from him. Silence.)

(Kenta continues reading. The girl pulls out a convenience store bun and eats quietly.)

(Minutes pass. Neither speaks.)

Kenta: (glancing up for half a second) (muttering) "...At least she's quiet."

Mystery Girl: (looking toward him briefly) (thinking) "That's him... the genius from Class A..."

(She looks away quickly, focusing on her bun.)

(More silence.)

Kenta: (standing, packing his books) "I'm leaving."

Mystery Girl: "Oh. Okay."

(He walks toward the door. Pauses. Turns slightly.)

Kenta: "You can have the rooftop tomorrow. I have a test to study for anyway."

Mystery Girl: (surprised) "Really? Thanks."

(Kenta nods once and leaves.)

(The girl watches him go, then looks down at her bun.)

Mystery Girl: (smiling slightly) "...He's not as cold as they say."

---

[Scene: Class 1-A - Next Morning]

Takahashi Kenji: (leaning over) "Hey, Kenta. Someone saw you on the rooftop yesterday. With a girl."

Kenta: (not looking up) "She was eating. I was studying. That's all."

Takahashi Kenji: "Who was she?"

Kenta: (pausing) "...I don't know."

Takahashi Kenji: "You didn't ask?!"

Kenta: "She didn't ask my name either."

Takahashi Kenji: (staring) "You two really are perfect for each other. Both socially clueless."

Kenta: "I'm not clueless."

Takahashi Kenji: "You just shared a rooftop with a mystery girl for an hour and didn't even get her name. That's the definition of clueless."

(Kenta goes silent. His pen stops moving for a moment.)

Kenta: (quietly) "...She had a soft voice."

Takahashi Kenji: (eyes widening) "What?"

Kenta: "Nothing."

(He goes back to reading. But Takahashi notices something he's never seen before—Kenta's eyes drift toward the window for just a second.)

Takahashi Kenji: (grinning to himself) (thinking) "Ohhh... something's happening..."

---

[Scene: School Hallway - Later]

(88% of girls in school secretly dream of Kenta. Love letters keep appearing. Whispers keep following.)

But something has changed.

For the first time in his life, when Kenta walks through the hallway...

He's looking for someone.

A girl with a soft voice.
