Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 : A Deal with The Devil

The hospital hallway smelled like antiseptic and quiet desperation.

Ava hated that smell.

It was the smell of fear… the smell of people waiting for miracles that sometimes never came.

She stood outside the doctor's office, her fingers gripping the strap of her worn handbag so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

The doctor finally stepped out.

His expression told her everything before he even spoke.

"Miss Williams," he said gently, "your mother's condition is getting worse."

Ava swallowed hard.

"How much time does she have?"

The doctor hesitated.

"Without surgery… maybe a few weeks."

The words hit her like a physical blow.

"A few weeks?" she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper.

The doctor nodded slowly and handed her a document.

"This is the cost for the operation."

Ava stared at the paper.

Her vision blurred for a moment.

$480,000.

Her heart sank so deep it felt like she was drowning.

"I… I can't afford that," she said quietly.

"I understand," the doctor said sympathetically. "But without the surgery…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Ava thanked him and walked down the hallway on shaky legs.

When she pushed open her mother's hospital room door, she forced a smile onto her face.

Her mother was asleep.

She looked so fragile on that bed, surrounded by tubes and machines.

Ava slowly sat beside her.

For a moment, she just watched her breathe.

"I'm going to fix this," Ava whispered, her voice breaking slightly. "I promise."

But she had no idea how.

Two hours later, Ava stepped outside the hospital.

The sky had opened up, rain pouring down in heavy sheets.

Within seconds she was completely soaked.

But she didn't move.

She just stood there.

The hospital bill in her hand felt heavier than the rain falling on her shoulders.

"Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars…" she murmured.

It might as well have been four hundred million.

She laughed bitterly to herself.

"Maybe I should rob a bank."

But even that sounded impossible.

She started walking down the quiet street, her mind spinning.

Loan sharks?

No.

They would destroy her life.

Selling her kidney?

The thought crossed her mind… and lingered longer than it should have.

Just then—

A car stopped beside her.

Ava glanced sideways.

It wasn't just any car.

It was a sleek black luxury car that looked like it belonged in a billionaire's garage, not on a rainy street beside a soaked girl wearing worn sneakers.

The tinted window slowly rolled down.

A man sat inside.

Even in the dim light, Ava could tell he was… different.

Sharp features. Perfect posture. Eyes so cold they made her uneasy.

He looked like the kind of man who controlled rooms without even trying.

"Are you Ava Williams?" he asked.

His voice was calm. Controlled.

Ava frowned.

"…Yes."

The man opened the car door and stepped out.

He was tall. Easily over six feet. His black suit looked expensive enough to pay her rent for a year.

Rain fell on his shoulders, but he didn't seem to care.

"Good," he said simply.

"I've been looking for you."

Ava blinked.

"You've been… what?"

Looking for her?

Why would a man like this be looking for someone like her?

"Do I know you?" she asked cautiously.

"No."

"Then how do you know my name?"

Instead of answering, he pulled a file from inside his coat.

He handed it to her.

"Your mother," he said calmly, "needs a heart surgery worth four hundred and eighty thousand dollars."

Ava's stomach dropped.

"How do you know that?" she demanded.

"I know a lot of things."

Something about the way he said it sent a chill down her spine.

Ava slowly lowered the file.

"What do you want?"

The man didn't hesitate.

"Marriage."

Ava stared at him.

"…What?"

"A contract marriage," he clarified. "One year."

The rain fell harder around them.

For a moment Ava wondered if she had misheard him.

"You want to marry me?" she said slowly.

"Yes."

"You don't even know me."

"I know enough."

Ava let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

She turned to walk away.

"Wait."

His voice stopped her.

"If you marry me, I will pay for your mother's surgery tonight."

Her footsteps froze.

Slowly… she turned around.

"What did you just say?"

"I will pay the entire hospital bill," he repeated calmly.

Ava searched his face for any sign that he was joking.

There was none.

Her heart began pounding violently.

"What's the catch?"

"You become my wife for one year."

"And after that?"

"We divorce."

Simple.

Cold.

Like he was discussing a business deal.

"Why me?" Ava asked.

The man's expression darkened slightly.

"My grandfather is dying," he said. "His last wish is to see me married."

"So you picked a random woman on the street?"

"I picked someone who needed the money."

His words were blunt.

Painfully honest.

Ava looked down at the hospital bill in her hand.

Her mother's weak face flashed in her mind.

The machines.

The doctor's voice.

A few weeks.

Her chest tightened.

"If I agree…" she said quietly, "you'll really pay the hospital tonight?"

"Yes."

"No tricks?"

"No tricks."

She took a slow breath.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at her.

For a moment the street seemed strangely quiet.

"Alexander Knight."

Ava's eyes widened.

That name was everywhere.

Business magazines.

News articles.

The ruthless billionaire CEO who built a billion-dollar empire before turning thirty.

And he was standing here in the rain…

asking her to marry him.

Her heart pounded painfully in her chest.

This was insane.

Completely insane.

But her mother was dying.

And this man…

was offering a miracle.

Ava closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them again, her voice was quiet but steady.

"…Okay."

Alexander raised an eyebrow.

"Okay?"

"I'll marry you."

For the first time, the corner of his lips lifted slightly.

"Good."

He turned toward the car.

But before getting inside, he paused.

"There's one more thing you should know."

A strange uneasiness crawled up Ava's spine.

"What?"

Alexander looked at her.

His eyes were darker now.

"This marriage won't be easy."

Ava frowned slightly.

"What do you mean?"

His voice dropped.

"Because you're not the woman my family wants me to marry."

Ava blinked.

"Then why—"

"And tomorrow," he added quietly,

"…the woman who was supposed to be my bride will be there."

The rain continued pouring as Ava stood frozen in the street.

Her stomach twisted.

"What woman?"

Alexander opened the car door.

"My fiancée."

Then he looked at her one last time.

"And she has no idea you exist."

The car door closed.

The engine started.

And just like that—

Ava realized she had just agreed to walk into a war she didn't understand.
