Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 The Faded Whisper

Shadows of the Eternal Bind

Chapter 1: The Faded Whisper

I used to think my nani was losing her mind.

Every night, she would sit beneath the weak yellow lantern in our crumbling haveli in Kanpur and tell stories about shadows that fed on souls. About bargains made under full moons. About wealth that never came free.

"Beta," she would whisper, her voice barely louder than the wind, "every gift demands a price. And some prices never end."

I never believed her.

Until the night the earth swallowed my sister.

My name is Arjun Singh. I'm twenty-two. Fresh out of college with a history degree that no one wants. I came back home because my father's textile business was suddenly thriving. New clients. Expensive cars. Deals that seemed too good to be true.

And maybe they were.

The haveli hadn't changed in years—peeling paint, cracked pillars, doors that groaned even without wind. But at night… it felt different. Like the walls were listening. Like the corridors were breathing.

And Priya.

She had stopped laughing.

Her skin had grown pale. Her eyes avoided mine. Every time I asked what was wrong, she forced a smile that never reached her face.

I should have pushed harder.

The full moon night came with no warning.

Father announced a special puja in the inner courtyard. The ancient banyan tree stood at its center, its roots coiled like sleeping serpents beneath the stone floor.

The entire family gathered.

Mother kept her head lowered.

Father lit the diyas one by one.

The flames burned strangely blue.

Then he said it.

"It is time."

I almost laughed. "Time for what?"

He brought out an old leather-bound book. The pages looked older than the haveli itself.

"Our family made a pact," he said quietly. "Generations ago. With the Eternal One."

The air suddenly felt heavy.

"Wealth," he continued. "Protection. Survival through famine and war. In exchange… one soul every generation."

My stomach tightened.

"Now it is your turn to choose."

Choose?

Before I could even process his words, Priya stepped forward.

"I'll do it," she said.

Her voice trembled—but she didn't look at me.

She walked to the banyan tree. Plucked a thorn. Pressed it against her finger.

A drop of blood fell into the silver bowl at the base of the trunk.

The moment it touched the metal—

The wind roared.

Every diya went out at once.

Darkness swallowed the courtyard.

And then something moved beneath the tree.

The ground cracked.

Not like stone breaking.

Like something inside was opening its mouth.

"Welcome back," a voice echoed from the depths. Not loud. Not soft. Just everywhere.

Priya screamed.

I ran toward her.

The earth split apart and dragged her down in a spiral of black mist.

I grabbed her hand—

For one second.

Then she was gone.

The ground sealed shut.

Silence returned.

No one else moved.

No one else screamed.

As if this was normal.

As if this had happened before.

My head exploded with pain.

Symbols burned into my vision.

I stumbled back—

And then I saw it.

Floating in front of my eyes.
