Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Unbound Queen

To ensure the story flows smoothly and stays within safety guidelines, I have focused on the moral weight and the tension of the situation. I used terms like "neutralizing the threat" and "putting them to rest" to describe the actions taken in the classrooms, focusing on the heavy atmosphere of the scene rather than graphic details.

"If we want Shizuka-sensei to be effective, we can't have her be the one who seizes power or enforces the harsh rules," Shiro explained, leaning back. "That leads to resentment. It's better if she acts as an advisor or an arbiter—a figure of absolute authority who stands above the fray."

He likened it to the role of a Shogun ruling in the name of a distant Emperor.

Yukinoshita Yukino looked skeptical, but her resolve was softening. "The school administration might still be active. Bypassing them to use Shizuka-sensei might not work."

"It doesn't matter," Hachiman cut in, his voice clear. "Most students don't even know what the Principal or the Dean looks like, let alone their names. Can you name them?"

He was stating a harsh truth that applied to almost everyone at Sobu High. Yukino opened her mouth to answer but stopped. She did know their names—her family was well-acquainted with the school board—but she couldn't argue with Hachiman's point. Most students only saw the administration as names on a plaque.

Hachiman continued, "In a crisis like this, students won't follow a name on a piece of paper. They'll follow someone they know and trust. Shizuka-sensei is the guidance counselor; she's handled every major event and club dispute. She's the one the students actually rely on."

She was, essentially, the perfect bridge. Shizuka-sensei cared deeply for her students, acting as the advisor even for a club as unconventional as the Service Club.

Yukino looked at the two boys. She didn't want to admit that this disaster might be long-term, but she knew that "preparing for the worst" was the only logical path forward. Hachiman, driven by concern for his sister Komachi, had already decided to act. He needed a secure base before he could venture out to save her.

"So," Yukino said, her pink lips curving into a thin line. "Who is this 'Emperor' you plan to use?"

"The Student Council," Hachiman answered, deducing Shiro's plan.

The Student Council held a natural form of "legitimate authority" among the students. Instructions given in their name would be followed instinctively.

Shiro nodded, confirming Hachiman's guess. "In this school, the Council's word is law during events like the Cultural Festival. The students are already conditioned to obey them."

"If we're talking about the Student Council President..." Yukino began.

Chapter 11: Shiromeguri Meguri

"Meguri-senpai?" Yukino pondered.

Shiromeguri Meguri was the current President, a third-year student. Under normal circumstances, elections for a new president would be happening soon, but no one at Sobu High ever wanted the job. It was a thankless role that ate up all of one's free time.

"The current President... what is she like?" Hachiman asked.

"She's... a gentle person," Yukino said, recalling her sister's friend.

Shiro crossed his legs, his expression unreadable. "She's competent enough, though perhaps not a natural-born commander. But she has immense personal charisma. She's 'healing'—the kind of person who makes everyone around her feel at ease."

"You seem to know a lot about her," Yukino noted.

"I know the prominent figures," Shiro shrugged. "The background characters are the ones I miss."

"So you know about me as well?" Yukino asked, testing him.

Shiro offered a small, sincere compliment. "The 'Always Correct' Yukinoshita. An uncompromising idealist. Compared to Hayama's wavering realism, I trust you far more."

Hayama Hayato was the "Sun" of the school—a boy who never disappointed his friends. But Shiro knew that Hayama's kindness was often a hollow attempt to keep everyone happy without actually solving the underlying problems. He was a mediator who avoided conflict at all costs.

Yukino, though cold and sharp, was genuinely kind underneath. She didn't offer the cheap, easy friendship that Hayama did. To Shiro, Hachiman, and Yukino, trust was something earned, not given away.

"I'll take that as a compliment," Yukino said, her face remaining a mask of calm.

"With my strength, Hachiman's insight, and your decisiveness, we can support Meguri-senpai and steer this school toward safety," Shiro said. "We can't leave it to the others to handle; it would be a disaster."

The door to the clubroom suddenly slid open. A boy Shiro didn't recognize stood there, looking startled. He caught sight of the three of them, bowed frantically, muttered, "Sorry for the intrusion!" and hurried away. Whether it was fear of the situation or respect for the people in the room, it was hard to say.

Once the door closed, Yukino looked back at Shiro. "I don't trust you."

She was blunt. They had known each other for less than an hour, and he had already manipulated her once.

"A necessary deception," Shiro replied. "If I hadn't used Shizuka-sensei's name, you wouldn't have left that classroom in time."

"And now?"

"Now, I give you my word. I will not lie to you again." Shiro raised his hands, his posture almost comical, like a prisoner surrendering. He looked directly into her blue eyes. "Please, give me a chance."

Hachiman winced at the cheesy line. It sounded like a rogue trying to win back a lover. But Yukino stared at Shiro, her eyes searching for any sign of a lie. Finally, she exhaled.

"...Fine. I will judge you based on your actions from here on."

"Then we have a plan. First, we find the President."

The three of them stepped out into the hallway. The Special Building was crowded now, with at least thirty or forty students huddling in groups. The building was long but narrow, and most of the students had crowded onto the third and fourth floors for safety.

They found Shizuka-sensei on the fourth floor, double-checking the strength of the barricades. Her calm smile was acting as an anchor for the panicked students around her.

"Oh, you three are together?" she said, looking relieved. "Good. You've done well so far."

"Sensei, have you seen Meguri-senpai?" Yukino asked.

"The President? No, I've been on this floor. Check downstairs."

The trio descended to the third floor. The population density here was much higher. Students were spilling out of the club rooms and into the corridors. Shiro, Hachiman, and Yukino stood out—the stoic Ice Queen, the gloomy Hachiman, and the shadow-like Shiro.

As they opened a door to one of the music rooms, they heard a soft, soothing voice.

"There, there... it doesn't hurt anymore. You're going to be fine."

"Am I going to die, Senpai?" a younger girl sobbed.

"No, everything will be okay. We're safe now."

They saw Shiromeguri Meguri kneeling on the floor, using a piece of cloth to bandage a girl's arm. She had black hair tied into two braids, with three clips holding her bangs back. She looked like a "country girl
