🌙 Chapter 3: The Girl Who Wasn't Smiling
The next morning, campus felt different.
Not because anything had changed —
but because something had.
Elara walked into the lecture hall as usual and took her seat in the last row. Calm. Controlled. Like always.
But today, she didn't look at the window.
She looked at the door.
And she hated that she did.
The door opened five minutes later.
Zayn walked in — late again.
Their eyes met for half a second.
He smiled.
She didn't.
Whispers started spreading during break.
"Did you see them on the rooftop last night?"
"They looked close."
Elara ignored the murmurs, focusing on her notes. She told herself it didn't matter.
Until someone sat beside her.
A girl.
Perfect hair. Confident posture. Sharp eyes.
"You're Elara, right?" the girl asked sweetly.
"Yes."
"I'm Arisha."
The name felt familiar. Campus debate champion. Popular. Outspoken.
Arisha glanced toward Zayn, who was laughing with a group of friends across the hall.
"You and Zayn seem… comfortable."
It wasn't a question.
Elara closed her notebook slowly. "We just talked."
Arisha's smile didn't reach her eyes.
"Be careful."
"With what?"
"With him."
Silence.
"He doesn't let people in easily. And when he does…"
She paused.
"It doesn't always end well."
Elara didn't respond.
But something unsettled her.
Later that afternoon, as Elara walked alone toward the library, her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
She hesitated — then answered.
"…Hello?"
There was no voice.
Just faint breathing.
Then the call ended.
Her heart tightened slightly.
Across the courtyard, Zayn was standing still.
Watching her.
Not smiling.
Not moving.
Just watching.
When she looked up, he slipped his phone into his pocket.
And for the first time—
Elara wondered if the quiet boy with the easy smile was hiding something far more serious than she had imagined.
Under the university sky,
not every secret shines like a star.
Some stay hidden in the dark.
