Chapter 3 - Veins of the Forgotten

The tunnel beyond the jade platform narrowed sharply, forcing even a lean frame to angle sideways. The air grew heavier, thick with the metallic tang of spirit ore and something older, something that smelled faintly of decay and unspent potential. Wards etched into the walls pulsed with dull red light; crude barriers meant to deter slaves, not someone who had already tasted Foundation fragments in his veins.

He walked without haste. Each step sent faint ripples through the thin layer of qi now circulating in his dantian. It was not yet his, merely borrowed architecture, but it responded to intent. When he focused, the silver glow beneath his skin brightened for a fraction of a second, then dimmed again.

The interface remained open in his peripheral vision, a silent companion.

Current Cultivation: Qi Condensation – Layer 1 (Initial)

Qi Reserves: 17% (Recovering)

Devouring Proficiency Matrix – Progress: 4.2%

Available Technique Fragments:

 • Serpent Flame Whip Art (Incomplete – 12%)

 • Basic Ore-Sensing Palm (Mortal Grade – 100%)

He dismissed the panel with a thought. Details could wait. First came momentum.

The passage opened abruptly into a smaller cavern, roughly circular, thirty metres in diameter. No slaves here. No overseers. Only a single, massive vein of spirit ore running vertically through the far wall like a frozen lightning bolt. The ore glowed with deep violet light, pulsing in slow, irregular intervals. Tiny motes of qi drifted upward from its surface like embers from a dying fire.

At the vein's base stood an iron cage, roughly human-sized. Inside it: a figure curled on its side. Pale skin marked with faint silver scales along the arms and neck. Long, ash-coloured hair matted with blood. Breathes shallow. One leg twisted at an unnatural angle.

The interface labelled it immediately.

Entity: Scaled Serpent Kin (Hybrid Mortal Grade)

Cultivation: Qi Condensation – Layer 3 (Injured)

Status: Captive / Essence Extraction Pending

Potential Yield: Medium-High

The figure stirred at the sound of footsteps. A single amber eye cracked open, slitted, like a reptile's, and fixed on him.

"You… are not one of them," the captive rasped. Voice dry, cracked from disuse. Female inflexion, though the scales made gender secondary.

He stopped three paces from the cage. Grey eyes assessed without expression.

"You are being harvested," he observed. Statement, not question.

A weak, bitter laugh. "Harvested. Drained. Whatever word you prefer." She shifted, chains clinking against iron bars. "They siphon my bloodline essence every third cycle. Enough to keep me alive. Not enough to let me heal." Another shallow breath. "You killed Huo Lang. I felt the ripple."

He inclined his head fractionally. Acknowledgement without confirmation.

"You wish freedom," he stated.

The amber eye narrowed. "I wish death over this. But if freedom comes first…" A pause. "What do you want in return?"

"Information. And your essence, willingly given."

Silence stretched between them.

Then she laughed again, this time softer, more resigned.

"You do not bargain like a human. Too direct. Too cold." She pushed herself up on one elbow, scales catching the violet glow. "My name was once Lirien. Now it is nothing. The bloodline I carry is diluted Serpent Sovereign lineage, minor regeneration, flame affinity, partial venom conversion. They want it for their puppets."

He regarded her without interruption.

"If I release you," he continued, "you will attempt to flee. Or attack. Either wastes time."

Lirien's lip curled, revealing a hint of fang. "And if I swear fealty?"

"I do not accept fealty. It is a chain with two ends."

She studied him for several heartbeats. Then her gaze dropped to the broken chains still dangling from his wrists.

"You broke free without cultivation. Killed a Qi Condensation overseer with bare hands." A slow exhale. "Very well. No oaths. No chains. Take what you need. Just… make it quick."

He stepped forward.

The cage lock was simple iron, reinforced with a basic warding rune. He pressed a palm to it. The borrowed qi from Huo Lang flowed outward, crude but sufficient. The rune flickered once and shattered like thin glass.

The door swung open with a groan.

Lirien made no move to rise. She simply extended her injured arm, palm up. Silver scales gleamed along the forearm.

"Do it."

He crouched. Placed two fingers against the pulse point at her wrist.

She tensed, expecting pain.

Instead, he channelled a thin thread of his own qi into the contact point. Not forceful. Guiding.

A crimson line rose from her skin, thicker than before, carrying heat and the faint scent of smouldering herbs.

[Devouring Proficiency Matrix – Target Offers Consent]

Bloodline Essence Detected: Diluted Serpent Sovereign (Regeneration + Flame-Venom Hybrid) Absorb? [Y/N]

Warning: Partial integration may cause temporary bloodline conflict.

He selected [Y].

The thread surged. Lirien gasped, body arching once, then slumped forward. Colour leached from her scales; they dulled to dull grey. Her breathing grew shallower still.

The qi that entered him was different, thicker, alive with serpentine patterns. It coiled through his meridians, seeking alignment.

Pain flared briefly behind his eyes. Then warmth. His skin prickled as faint silver lines appeared along his forearms, temporary, fading almost immediately.

The interface chimed.

[Absorption Complete]

New Bloodline Fragment Acquired: Diluted Serpent Sovereign (Regeneration 8% | Flame-Venom Affinity 11%)

Devouring Proficiency Matrix – Progress: 9.8%

Minor Body Refinement: +1 Vitality, +1 Agility

Current Cultivation: Qi Condensation – Layer 1 (Peak – 98% to Layer 2)

He exhaled slowly. The new essence settled, not dominant, but present. A tool among tools.

Lirien's eye fluttered open one last time.

"You… kept your word," she whispered. "No chains."

He rose without answering.

She smiled, faintly, exhausted. "Finish it. Please."

He placed a hand on the crown of her head. A single, precise pulse of qi through the Baihui point.

Her body went limp.

Another crimson thread rose, final, faint.

[Final Essence Harvested]

Regeneration efficiency increased to 12%

Devouring Proficiency Matrix – Progress: 11.1%

He stepped away from the cage.

The violet vein in the wall pulsed brighter, as though sensing fresh death.

He approached it. Pressed both palms to the ore.

Qi flowed outward, now guided by the new fragments. Tiny motes answered, drawn into his palms like iron filings to a magnet.

The interface flickered again.

[Spirit Ore Absorption Initiated]

Qi Reserves: 42% → 78%

Ore-Sensing Palm proficiency increased to 100% → Evolved Fragment: Serpent-Ore Resonance (Nascent)

He withdrew his hands.

The vein dimmed slightly, but did not die.

Enough for now.

Behind him, the tunnel mouth remained open. Shouts were rising again, distant, but growing closer. Reinforcements.

He turned toward the deeper passage, the one that sloped downward, where the air grew hotter and the wards thicker.

One layer peeled away.

One fragment claimed.

One step closer to a path that required no one else.

The chains on his wrists clinked once more as he descended.
