SERENA'S POV
I told Luca I wanted to talk to a man named Beppe.
It wasn't a lie, which was the beauty of it. Beppe ran a tobacco shop near the Navigli and he'd done small jobs for half the families in the city over the years, the kind of man who knew which faces belonged to which names. If anyone could put names to the two advisors at Matteo's last meeting, it was Beppe. I'd thought of him on my own. The fact that his shop sat three streets from the alterations place was the kind of coincidence I'd learned never to waste.
Luca looked at me across his desk when I told him. "I'll send Farro."
"Send whoever you want," I said. "Beppe won't talk if he sees muscle standing over him. He'll need to think it's just me asking an old favor."
He considered that. "Farro stays with the car. You go in alone. He watches the door."
"Fine."
It was better than fine. It was exactly the gap I needed.
