Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Echoes of Silence

The night was unusually quiet, but for Akila, the silence was screaming. She sat on the edge of her bed, holding a faded photograph—the only memory of a time when she believed in fairy tales. Her father's smile in the picture felt like a cruel joke now. He had always told her that the world was kind to those who were good.

"You were wrong, Pa," she whispered, her fingers tracing the burnt edges of the photo.

The world wasn't kind. It was a predator, and she had been the prey for far too long. She remembered the day her uncle had sold their family land, leaving her and her mother with nothing but debts and a roof that leaked every time it rained. She remembered the cold stares of the villagers who once called her 'daughter'.

But more than the poverty, it was the betrayal of Suresh that hurt the most. He was the one who promised to protect her, only to leave her when she needed him most.

Akila stood up and walked to the window. The city lights in the distance looked like fallen stars. For the first time, she didn't feel like crying. The tears had dried up long ago, leaving behind something harder, like diamond.

"If they want a victim, they won't find her here anymore," she said to the darkness.

She opened an old wooden box under her bed. Inside was a small, black diary and a silver locket. These were her weapons now. Not for physical war, but for the war of shadows she was about to begin. She began to write. Not poems, not dreams, but a list of names. Names of people who thought they could step on her and walk away.

The first name on the list: Suresh.
