Chapter 1 - Prologue

The sky over Vorthax had been burning since the third watch, and Maret had stopped looking at it two hours before that. Red skies meant nothing to her anymore. She had grown up under red skies. She had learned to stitch wounds and pack cavities and talk frightened men through the last minutes of their lives under a sky the color of cooling iron, and somewhere in the middle of all that she had stopped thinking of it as ominous and started thinking of it as simply the sky. Just the sky. The thing above. You didn't stop moving because of the thing above.

She moved now. Down the corridor that ran along the east side of the fourth level, her steps clipped and even, her left hand pressed flat against the bundle at her front. The bundle breathed. She could feel it, that small regular pressure against her palm, and she kept her hand there the way you keep a hand on a wound that's still seeping, not because the pressure fixes anything, not really, but because you need to know it's still going.

The alarms had been running for twenty minutes. Not the battle alarms, the low grinding kind that meant something external was coming at the walls. These were the other ones, the ones Maret had only heard twice in her life, a high sustained shriek that lived somewhere between a whistle and a scream, and what they meant, what they had always meant, was that someone inside the fortress had done something wrong. Betrayed. Stolen. Broken an oath. The clan's word for it had no real translation in the trade tongue but if you pressed a scholar she would probably write something like: an act which unmakes the actor.

Maret thought about that. The phrase moved through her head with each step.

An act which unmakes the actor.

Well.

She turned into the service passage and felt the air change, cooler, damper, close in that particular way of stone corridors that hadn't been aired out in years. The torch brackets down here were older, the iron ones, not the newer brass-fitted ones in the main halls, and most of them had burned out. She navigated by the thin line of orange light that came up through a drainage grate to her left, and by memory, and by the particular sound her heels made on the uneven stone, a half-second echo that told her when she was passing the intersection with the old supply annex and when she had gone past it.

There were footsteps behind her. Quick. Too quick for someone walking normally in a crowded corridor.

"Maret."

She knew the voice. She didn't slow down. "Not now, Coda."

"You have to hear this." A pause for running breath. Coda came alongside her, lanky and pale-faced and wide-eyed in a way that she had never quite managed to cure him of even after two years of working crisis wards together. He was a good healer. He flinched at everything but his hands never did. She'd learned to trust his hands and keep her eyes off his face. "They know it was born. Ardovael told someone, or someone else was in the birthing chamber, or—I don't know how they know but they know. Maret." He grabbed her sleeve. "They're tearing apart the wing hall. They say the elder dreamed it three times. They say the child is the blade."

"The phrase," Maret said, "is 'the knife that will cut the cord of the clan.'" She said it the way you say something you've heard too many times, flat, without weight. "And they've been saying that about someone's child every six years since before I was born."

"This is different."

"They always say that too."

"Maret." He looked at the bundle. He didn't know yet, not for certain, but he was starting to understand the shape of what he was looking at. She could see it moving through him, the way understanding sometimes moves through a person, not all at once but in stages, each one worse than the last. "Tell me that's not—"

"I need water," she said. "Thread. The small burner. The bone needles from the sealed kit, not the iron ones, the bone ones, and the clean cloth from under the floor tile. You know which one."

He stared at her.

"Coda."

"If I help you with this—"

"You'll have done the right thing," she said, and then she stopped, because she owed him more than that, she had always tried to give him more than the easy version, and so she looked at him directly in the bad light and said, "or you'll have done a terrible thing. I can't tell you which. I'm not able to see clearly enough to tell you which. I only know what I'm doing and why, and why felt right enough to start, and I don't know yet if it'll feel right enough to finish. Go."

He stood there for another two seconds. She counted them. Then he went.

She kept moving. Deeper into the passage, past the lines someone had scratched into the stone at roughly knee height, a long row of marks in groups of four crossed with a fifth, the way people count when they're counting something they don't want to think too hard about. She had always wondered who made those marks. She had wondered it the first time she came this way, years ago, as an apprentice being shown the servant routes, and she had not thought to wonder it for a long time since, and she was wondering it now, in the bad-lit quiet with the alarms still screaming somewhere above her, because the mind will grab at whatever it can grab at when it doesn't want to stay in the present moment.

The baby made a sound. Not a cry. A kind of wet, questing thing, like something testing whether sound was worth the effort. Maret put her lips near the cloth and breathed out slowly, the way her own mother had done with her once, something she had not thought about in years and didn't want to think about now either, and the small sound stopped.

"Almost there," she said. The words felt stupid coming out of her mouth. She said them anyway.

Two guards came around the far corner at a run, claws half-out, the particular look on their faces that young guards got when they had been told something was holy and they believed it, a brightness in the eyes that Maret had learned to think of as the most dangerous kind of brightness there was, the kind that left no room for ordinary doubt. They saw her. The taller one pointed. "You. Stop. What are you carrying?"

She stopped. She had already decided how to play this, which was not precisely the same as not being afraid, but it was a reasonable substitute. "Bandages," she said. "The fever ward is out."

"Open it."

There was a pause, the kind where everyone in the scene understands that opening it would end the scene very badly, but no one has acknowledged that aloud yet. Maret let the pause sit for exactly long enough, and then she shifted the bundle in her left arm and let the cloak fall with her right hand, just enough, just the cloth underneath and the dark top of the small head where the little horns hadn't fully hardened yet, just hair and cloth. No face.

The taller guard leaned forward, squinting. His partner circled to the left. Old formation instinct. "Why're you carrying it that close?"

"Heat," she said. "The coal ran out at the second shift. If you let a fever patient's bandages go cold, you undo the compress work. I was at that station for six hours." She kept her voice moderately irritated in the specific way of a mid-level practitioner who has been interrupted in a practical task by someone who doesn't understand practical tasks. The irritation was not entirely performed. "Unless you want to explain to the ward chief why the man in bed seven is bleeding again from an improperly warmed dressing."

The shorter guard's nostrils flared. "You smell like blood."

"I work in a ward," she said.

The taller one stepped closer and reached for the cloth. Maret turned her body, hard, shoulder into his reaching hand, cutting off the angle, and the hand grabbed at air. "Move," she said, the single flat word, packed with all the authority she had ever watched the senior elders use, the specific register that didn't ask, didn't threaten, just stated the reality of how things were going to be. It was a register she'd spent a long time learning to produce. It worked more often than it should. It worked now. The guards stepped back, and she walked through the gap, and she did not speed up until she had turned two corners.

The hidden door was an old iron hatch set low in the outer wall, scaled with rust, bolted from the inside. She'd found it three years ago looking for a leak in the drainage line. She'd remembered it the way you remember things that your mind files under some wordless category that might be called emergency, might be called last resort, might not be called anything at all but is still there, in its slot, waiting. She knelt, and the stone was wet and cold through her trouser knee, and she slid the bolt and pushed. The hinges made a sound like something being slowly bent against its will. She pulled the hatch shut behind her and dropped the bar.

The room was about four paces by three. One table, old stone, the surface worn smooth by water damage or use or both. A shelf with clay jars, most cracked. A basin. A drain hole in the far corner, iron-fitted, with the original grate still in place, slightly buckled. No windows, no vents that she could see, though there was a faint movement of air from somewhere, cold and faintly iron-smelling. Her own wings were folded tight and tied down beneath her cloak, both for profile and because the passage hadn't been wide enough to risk them brushing the walls.

She laid the baby on the table.

She didn't unwrap him right away. She stood and looked at him for a moment, which was a strange thing to do given the urgency but which she could not help, and in that moment she tried to see him clearly, not as a patient, not as the thing she had pulled out of the birth-caul an hour ago while the alarms were still warming up, not as the vision's child or the blade or the cord-cutter, not as any of those. Just the particular small being that he was, separate from everything that had been decided about him before he drew his first breath. He was about three and a half pounds. His face was still purple-red and compressed in the way of the newly born, which made him look ancient and outraged. His horns were two soft nubs above the ears, translucent enough that she could see the blood moving in them. His wings, when he stretched, were each about the size of her hand, thin as rice paper, the veining visible, flushed pink, alive.

She looked at the wings for longer than she needed to.

Then she unwrapped him.

"You don't know me," she said. Her voice came out strange, lower than she expected. "That's—that's all right. You'll know other people. That's the plan, or part of it. You'll have people who don't know this room or this fortress or any of this. They'll know you differently." She paused. She had thought she had more to say than that. She put her hands flat on the table to stop them shaking and found that the cold stone helped. "I'm sorry," she said. "That's not enough either. I know that."

She had spent a long time deciding how she felt about the vision. Longer than she was proud of. The elder had announced it during the winter convening—three nights running, the same image, a child born with the mark of the doubled moon on his chest, which was an old symbol, older than the fortress, older than the Crimson Maw as a clan, and which meant various things depending on which tradition you consulted, but in the primary clan reading meant a soul uncorrupted by hunger, which in turn meant a soul that had never had the hunger-gland opened, never been fed the first feast, never been initiated into the particular hunger that made the Maw what it was. A soul like that, the vision said, born in the right body, at the right convergence, would end the hunger. The elder had said this with her hands open and her voice bright, in the way she said things that she had decided were simply facts about the world. The clan would end. The hunger would end. And therefore.

And therefore.

Maret had listened to the and therefore and felt something clarify in her chest like water that has been stirred and then goes still. She had understood, then, exactly what kind of people she had been living among. Not for the first time, but clearly, sharply, in a way that didn't leave room for the usual soft interpretations.

She understood that this was not simple either. She had done the thinking. She had done it over months, going back and forth in her head while she packed wounds and listened to the alarms run their cycles and watched the elders conduct their ceremonies and tried to see the ceremonies clearly, without the lens of disgust that made things simple, without the lens of familiarity that made things invisible. What she saw, when she looked clearly, was people who had built a way of life around a thing they had decided was sacred, and who were not, most of them, stupid, and who were not, most of them, without genuine care for one another, and who had, over several generations, arranged all of their values in a shape that made the murder of a particular kind of child seem not only acceptable but holy, and who had done this without any single dramatic decision but simply through the accumulated logic of a culture that had never had to be wrong about itself, because no one from outside had ever been strong enough to make it wrong.

She had thought about all of this. She still thought the elder was going to kill this child if she didn't move.

She was not naive enough to think those two thoughts cancelled each other out. Both were true. That was the world.

Light boots outside the hatch. The specific step she recognized because she'd worked beside it for two years. Coda came through the gap with a heap of things against his chest, his face doing several things at once. He saw the baby and he saw the wings and he saw the blade already on the table edge and he stood very still.

"You're actually doing this," he said.

"Yes."

He set the things down. Water skin. Thread. The small burner, hinged copper, the kind apprentices used for sterilizing small instruments. Bone needles wrapped in oiled paper. The cloth, wax-wrapped, which she had packed herself six days ago, which meant she had been planning this for at least six days, which was a thing she had not quite consciously acknowledged until this moment. She had been planning it for six days and had not decided yet, or rather she had decided without deciding, which was its own kind of decision.

"The numb salve," Coda said, setting down a small clay pot. "I thought. For the skin." He didn't finish the sentence.

"Good."

"It's not going to be enough," he said. "For all of it."

"No." She picked up the burner. "I know. Close the vent grate. Stuff something in it. When he cries the sound will find the corridor."

He did it. He moved in the jerky way he moved when he was frightened, faster than necessary and slightly off his usual coordination, and he knocked a clay jar off the shelf. It cracked on the stone. The noise was very loud in the small room. They both froze. The alarms screamed on above them, unchanging, and the footsteps in the corridor beyond the hatch did not alter.

"Sorry," Coda said.

"It's fine." It wasn't, not precisely, but there was no use in making him more frightened. She had found that lesson early in her training: when the person helping you is on the edge of their capacity, you do not push them toward the edge, you find where they still have ground under their feet and you work from there. "Help me clean the table."

They worked. She boiled the needles in the burner's small cup. She washed her hands twice with the water and the root-soap she'd packed. She cleaned the baby with slow, deliberate movements, and he bore it with the offended patience of the newborn, which knows that the world is large and wrong and has no way yet to articulate either thing. She rubbed the numb salve along the wing-joints and the upper chest, working it into the skin with the balls of her fingers. The salve smelled sharp and faintly sweet, the smell she associated with field surgery on bad days, and it did not help as much as she needed it to, but it would help some.

Coda stood with his arms at his sides and his jaw working and then he said, "We could run. Right now. There are routes through the lower tunnels that—"

"She tracks clan-marks through the wings," Maret said. "The elder can find them. Distance doesn't matter." She set the blade on the table and looked at her hands, which were, for the moment, steady. "Hold him. Shoulders and legs both. Don't cover his mouth."

"I can't watch this."

"You don't have to. But your hands have to hold."

"Why are you doing this?" he said, and the question was genuine, not rhetorical, it had the sound of someone who actually didn't know the answer and needed it. "The vision says he ends the clan. The clan is—the clan is us. The clan is you. If the vision is true, then—"

"Then maybe the clan should end," she said. It came out quiet. She hadn't quite said it that plainly before, even to herself. The room was quiet enough that she could hear the baby breathing. "Or maybe the vision is wrong. I don't know, Coda. I'm a healer. I know how to take out a gland. I know how to close a wound. I know that a child hasn't done anything yet, hasn't chosen anything yet, and what we're planning to do to him isn't for anything he's done or might do. It's just fear. It's fear wearing the clothes of prophecy and calling itself sacred." She exhaled. "That's what I know. It might not be enough to be right with. But it's what I have."

His hands found the baby's shoulders. His face was turned partly away. His hands were steady, as she'd known they would be. She had always trusted his hands.

"Breathe," she told him.

"I'm breathing."

"Better. Do it again."

He did.

She took the first wing between two fingers, feeling the structure of it, the fine bones no thicker than quill shafts, the membrane that would in a few months become the deep bruised black of all the Maw's fliers, the veins she could see running through it like watermarks in old paper. There was a pulse in it. She could feel the pulse. She set her jaw.

The cut was clean. She had practiced clean cuts for twenty years, had been told by her first teacher that the difference between a surgeon and a butcher was the idea that a clean cut was a kind of mercy even if it didn't feel like one, and she had been skeptical of that at the time and had since found it to be mostly true. The baby did not understand it yet. And then he did. The sound he made was not a scream, precisely. It was something worse than a scream, it had a particular quality of wrongness in it, the sound of a newly conscious being experiencing something for which it has no categories yet, only the raw data of pain, which was, she understood with horrible clarity, the rawest data there is.

"I know," she said, very low. "I know. I know. I'm here."

Coda's jaw had gone rigid. His hands held. His eyes were closed.

"Don't close your eyes," she said. "You need to watch for bleeding on the back of the shoulder. Left side."

He opened his eyes. He looked where she told him to look. His face was terrible and his hands were steady.

She worked. Both wings. She felt each cut the way she felt all her cuts, which was to say with her whole body, a full-body sensation that she had learned early to partition off into a small, separate room in herself while the rest of her stayed functional. She had done it this way for years and she knew the cost of it, the way the things you put in that room did not stay there, that they seeped back eventually, that there was a reckoning that came, usually at night, usually in the particular unguarded minutes between sleep and waking. She knew that. She let herself know it and then she put that knowledge in the room too and went on.

The wings she put into a cloth and tied it. She would deal with that later. She pressed the compress and counted. She stitched. Her hands moved in the rote pattern that they knew without her, and she let them move that way, because it was faster and because the rote pattern left some part of her free to keep talking to him, a low continuous murmur, her own name for him, which was not the name she'd give him formally, which she had thought about during those six days she was not-deciding, a short name, two syllables, the name of her younger brother who had died seven years ago of a chest wound that should not have killed him but did because she had been three days' march away and the healer on site had not known what she knew.

"Vael," she said. It sounded different said aloud in this room. More solid. More like a person and less like an idea. She said it again. "Vael. There you are."

When the chest bleeding slowed, she moved to the second cut, the harder one, the one she had spent the most time thinking about in terms of technique and the least time thinking about in terms of what it meant, because she did not think she could do it if she let herself think too much about what it meant. The hunger-gland. She had seen it twice, once in a cadaver during her training and once in a man who was dying on the ward from a rupture and had let her study him on the condition that she tell him about his wife's pregnancy while she did it, which she had done, describing all the stages in order, and he had listened with his eyes closed and a look on his face that she still thought about sometimes. The gland was small. It didn't look like much. That was the first thing she'd thought both times she'd seen it, that it didn't look like anything that could do what they said it did. A hard nub under a web of fine vessels, about the size of a finger-tip, the color of old bruising.

What the gland did, as far as she understood from anatomy and from fifteen years of watching what it produced in people: it amplified craving. Not ordinary craving, not the ordinary desire for sustenance or warmth or connection or power that she saw in everyone around her. Something more specifically directed than that, a hunger that the clan called holy and which she had gradually come to think of as a kind of domesticated pathology, something that had started, maybe, as an adaptive advantage, a heightened need that drove people to compete and hunt and dominate, and which over generations had been selected for, ceremonially fed, culturally celebrated, until it had become the organizing principle of an entire people's identity. Hunger as value. Craving as virtue. The self as a function of what it consumed.

She had watched it produce very fine people who did terrible things and felt clean doing them. That was what it produced. Not monsters. People who felt clean.

She was not entirely sure what removing the gland would produce. She thought, probably, someone who could want things without being consumed by wanting them. Someone for whom craving was information rather than instruction. Someone who might look at the world and see it more clearly than hunger allowed. She was not sure. She was acting on something that was not certainty. She had decided that not-certainty was going to have to be enough.

"Hold him exactly still," she said to Coda.

"I am."

"Stiller."

The cut she made was small and deliberate. The baby had exhausted the easiest register of his protest and was working now on a thin, wavering cry that had in it something deeply rhythmic and biological, the sound of a small organism demanding that the world be other than it was. She worked through the sound. She had to. She went layer by layer down to the gland, using the smallest instruments, keeping the vessels intact, and she could feel herself in that operational state she knew from the worst nights in the ward, where everything extraneous fell away and there was only the problem in front of her, its specific dimensions, the sequence of steps required. She found the gland with the tip of her smallest probe and felt its hardness, its stubbornness, the way it did not want to come free.

"What if he's not the one?" Coda said. Suddenly. His voice was scraped down to almost nothing.

She continued working. "What?"

"The vision. What if this one's not the child in the vision, and you're doing this to a child who was just going to be, I don't know. A regular person. A healer, maybe. Someone who was just going to live."

She teased the gland free, slow, millimeter by millimeter, feeling for the resistance, releasing it. "Then I've done this to a child who was going to be a regular person," she said. "And that's going to be something I carry." She felt the gland come free from the last fine vessel and lifted it in the spoon. It sat there and looked like nothing. "But the alternative was that they killed him. Whatever else he was going to be. And I couldn't—" She stopped. She turned and set the spoon on the burner-plate and the gland sizzled and began to blacken and the smell that came off it was sweet and wrong in a way that hit the back of her throat and made something primal in her body respond, some old response, appetite or fear or both. She held her breath until it passed. "I couldn't stand by for that," she said. "I know that's not a logical defense. I know it might not have been the right choice. But I couldn't."

The gland was ash. She turned back and stitched the chest. Her tears fell onto the table rather than the wound, she was careful about that, her tears were not clean and the wound was. She didn't try to stop the crying. She had learned early that stopping it took up energy that could be spent better. The baby's crying was thinning, wearing down, not from calm but from sheer exhaustion. He was still here. She checked the pulse in his throat. Strong. Outraged. Present.

"He's alive," Coda said, in a voice that sounded like he was hearing his own words from very far away.

"For now," she said. "And for now is what I had to give him."

She was wrapping the chest when the footsteps came. Not one set, not the shuffling of a single guard doing a route. Many. And under them, clear and evenly spaced as drops from a roof after rain, the steps of someone who walks knowing that the space around her moves to accommodate her weight. Maret had heard those steps her whole life. She knew them better than she'd known her own parents' steps, because those steps had been the ambient sound of her entire formation, the sound of order, of the world's shape being decided.

Ardovael's voice, clean and high, cut through two walls and a hatch: "Break every door. I want every room."

Maret's body went cold in the specific way it went cold when something she had been managing against the possibility of finally became a certainty. She set her jaw and turned. "Take that cloth," she said, pointing to the bundle with the wings. "The drain. Pour the acid. All of it. All of it, don't measure."

Coda grabbed it, he grabbed the acid flask from the shelf, his hands were shaking now, his hands had finally decided to join the rest of him. The drain hissed. The smell was immediate and physical and she ignored it. She lifted Vael and held him for a breath against her chest, feeling the furious little heart, and she thought: good. Good, that's right, stay furious, you're allowed to be furious, you're allowed to want the world to be other than it is.

"The old room," she said. "I need you to go first and get the pod ready. Run."

"That pod hasn't been tested in—"

"Run, Coda."

He ran. She followed, and the way she moved now was different from before, the careful controlled pace gone, replaced by something more fundamental, the movement of something that has accepted that it may not have much time and has made its peace with accepting that, mostly.

The shelf in the back of the room, she moved it with her shoulder while she kept the baby against her front. The seam in the wall, she knew where it was, she had found it six days ago when she was not-deciding, she pressed the catch and the panel swung inward and there was cold air and old dark and the narrow stair going down.

The deep room had been carved out of the rock below the fortress's own foundations, which meant it was cold in a way that had nothing to do with season and everything to do with geology, a deep cold, the temperature of things that haven't seen light in a long time. The machines along the wall were dead, most of them, their surfaces layered with dust in the way of things that no one expects to use again. But at the far end the cradle still had its faint rim-glow, that particular color of bioluminescence that the Maw's engineers had bred into certain materials centuries ago, which did not require power and would not go out.

The gate ring was on the floor. Black stone, about two meters across, scored with lines that had been cut deep and then worn shallow by time. She had found the old technical documents for it in the restricted archive, which she had accessed by the simple expedient of being invisible in the way that healers were invisible to people who ran fortresses, because healers were everywhere and everywhere became nowhere, and nowhere could go places. The gate ring, according to documents that were four hundred years old and might or might not be accurate, opened on a different spatial position using a resonance principle that the documents described in a technical language that she did not entirely understand but had understood enough of to know: it needed a current, a specific vibrational input that the original engineers had calibrated to a frequency in the planetary magnetic field, and it needed someone to ask it to open in the old address format, which was not mystical, it was mathematical, it was just mathematics that looked like speech.

She had memorized the address format during those six days of not-deciding.

Coda was at the pod already. He had the lid up and was checking the interior, running his hands along the lining with the professional automaticity of someone who has done intake assessments long enough to do them without thinking. The power light flickered when he pressed the charge-plate. Then it held.

"It's live," he said. He sounded like he couldn't believe it.

"I know." She crossed to the pod and looked inside. The lining was clean, a real minor miracle given the state of everything else down here. She thought: someone kept this clean. Someone came down here and cleaned this and didn't tell anyone. She thought about who that might have been and decided she would never know. "Step back. Let me put him in."

She set Vael in the pod. He had gone quiet, the quiet of profound depletion, his face still red and furious but his eyes open and doing something she couldn't interpret, looking at the dim ceiling with an expression that had nothing yet of knowledge in it but that seemed to her, in this bad light, in this strange moment, to be something adjacent to attention. Like something registering. Like something learning what light was.

"Hey," she said, which was inadequate, but she said it. "Hey. Look."

He didn't look at her because he was a baby and didn't know what looking at someone was yet. She kept talking. She had not prepared a speech. She had thought she would have something prepared, something that covered the size of the moment, but the moment was too large for anything she had prepared, so she said things that were true instead of things that were large, because true was what she had.

"You'll have a name," she said. "A real one. I have one for you but you'll get one from wherever you go too, and that one will probably be more yours than mine. That's fine. Both can be true. You're going to a place where the sky doesn't hurt to look at. The air isn't thin. People hold their children there. Not all of them all the time, but enough, enough that you'll have a chance to be held." She touched his cheek with two fingers. He turned his face toward the touch, the reflex, and her throat closed entirely. She waited. She went on. "You're going to be angry when you're older. About this. About what I did. I want you to know I know that, and I know it's right. You're allowed. But you're going to be alive to be angry, and that's—that's the only part I had any power over, so that's the part I chose."

Coda was standing a few feet behind her, breathing with difficulty. "I should be stopping this," he said. "Professionally. Ethically. I should be stopping you."

"Probably," she said.

"I'm not going to."

"I know."

"I don't know why."

She stood and turned and looked at him. He looked back. He was twenty-six years old and she had known him since he was twenty-four and in all that time she had never quite figured out the shape of his courage, because it didn't look like courage, it looked like persistent confusion, and she had come to think that was maybe the real thing, the confusion that keeps going anyway. "Because you're a good man," she said. "You can disagree with that if you want."

"I don't want to," he said.

She went to the control plinth. It was old granite, the runes cut into it deeply enough that even the centuries hadn't smoothed them entirely, you could still feel them if you ran your fingers in, which she did, tracing them, finding them with her fingertips. She pressed her palm flat to the center. She felt a faint thrum, or she thought she did, or she told herself she did, and then she spoke the address format, not aloud the way the old ceremonies did it, not with the chanting and the blood, which she thought was theater, which she thought was four hundred years of people who didn't understand the mechanism trying to interact with it using the vocabulary they had. She spoke it as numbers and coordinates and a directional vector and a duration request, which was the language the documents used. She finished. The room was silent.

Then the ring answered.

It was a low sound, lower than hearing for a moment and then just inside it, a resonance that she felt in her back teeth and her sternum and the space behind her eyes. Dust moved. Old dry dust, lifting off the ring's surface in a slow spiral, and the engraved lines began to glow, not bioluminescent, something else, something that looked like the light in the sky just before a storm, that particular charged quality, the light that means something is about to change.

Coda made a noise that was not words.

"Help me move the pod," she said.

They each took a side. The pod moved on the floor smoothly, mounted on some low-friction surface she hadn't noticed, the engineers had thought of that, and she felt a surge of gratitude toward those dead engineers, those four-hundred-year-dead people who had built something and built it right and trusted that someone would eventually need to use it. They moved the pod to the edge of the circle. The light climbed the side of it and touched the lid and Vael, inside, made a sound, she heard it through the material, small, questioning.

"Stay with us," she said. "Just a little longer."

The steps came from above. Many. The particular cadence she'd been dreading, that even spacing under the noise of the general approach. And then the door at the top of the stair opened, and the light from above came down, and Ardovael descended.

She was sixty or seventy, it was difficult to say with exactness because the Maw's elders had a way of aging that went in stages rather than continuously, long plateaus and then sudden drops, and she was in a plateau that had lasted perhaps fifteen years. Her wings were full and wide, not the narrow wings of the fighter or the broad ones of the flier, but something in between, the wings of someone who has used them for every purpose and let them develop accordingly. She wore the deep red of the convening rank, which she was entitled to but rarely wore. She had worn it today deliberately. Everything Ardovael did was deliberate. That was the thing Maret had never stopped believing about her, even now: that she was genuine, that she believed what she said, that the calm in her face was not performance but actual conviction. It would have been easier if it were performance.

She came down the stairs with four guards and she took in the room the way she always took in rooms, all of it at once, the pod, the lit ring, the blood on Maret's sleeves, the ash on the burner plate, all of it, and her face did not change.

"So," she said. Her voice in the low room was very clear. "You meant it."

"Yes," Maret said.

"You removed the wings."

"Yes."

"And the gift."

"It isn't a gift," Maret said. The words came out steadier than she felt. "A gift is given freely. A gift is something you can choose to use or not use. That thing is neither."

Ardovael looked at her for a long moment. There was something in the look that Maret could not read, which was unusual, because she had spent years watching Ardovael's face for information in the way you watch an elder's face when you are trying to understand what the world is about to require of you. "Give me the child," she said.

"No."

A nod toward the guards. The nearest one stepped forward. Maret shifted her weight. Her hand had already found the blade at her belt, and she had it out without consciously deciding to draw it, and she held it not in a fighting position precisely, she was not a fighter, but in a way that said: this is real, this is a real blade, I have used blades before in ways that left blood on the floor, take that information and apply it to whatever you're planning to do next.

The guard stopped. His eyes went to the blade, then to her face, then to the blade again.

"She won't use it," he said. To the room. To Ardovael. To himself, possibly.

"Try me," Maret said.

Ardovael raised her hand. The guard stilled. She studied Maret across the lit circle. Her expression had something in it that Maret could only describe as consideration, genuine, the consideration of someone who takes their opponent seriously, which was in its own way more frightening than contempt would have been.

"Why?" she said.

"You know why."

"Say it." Not a command, not exactly. More like: I want to hear it in your voice. I want to know what your version of this is.

Maret swallowed. The ring hummed against the stone beneath her feet. "You dreamed a child whose soul the hunger never touched would end the hunger," she said. "And you decided to kill the child rather than consider what that means. You decided that what we are is more important than what we could be. And I—" She stopped. She thought about how to say the next part without it sounding like she thought she was better than Ardovael, because she didn't think she was, not exactly, she just thought she was making a different choice. "I looked at him," she said finally. "I looked at him and he hadn't done anything yet and you had already decided what to do with him, and I couldn't—" She heard herself going in circles. She stopped. "I chose him," she said. "Over the rest of it. Over all the rest of it. I know what that means."

Ardovael's face moved. Something crossed it, quick and gone. "Hunger is the truth of what we are," she said. "You cut truth from a child."

"I cut a pathology from a child," Maret said. "You've been telling yourselves it's truth for so long you can't see the difference."

A long silence. The ring light climbed the walls.

"You would not exist without what you're calling pathology," Ardovael said. "None of us would. Our strength, our reach, everything we built. You stand in a fortress, in a room built by hunger, and you call it wrong."

"Yes," Maret said. "That's exactly what I'm doing."

Ardovael tilted her head. "You've always been difficult."

"I know."

"I thought you understood us."

"I do understand you," Maret said. "Understanding isn't the same as agreeing."

Something passed across Ardovael's face then that might have been the closest she ever came to sorrow, or it might have been only the look of someone who has made a decision they have already made many times before and find no easier for the repetition. She looked at the pod. She looked at the ring, which was at its brightest now, the clear space inside it not quite a window but close, a trembling transparency through which another kind of light was visible. She nodded.

"Take her," she said. "And the pod."

The guard came fast. Maret dropped under the first grab, let her knees bend and her weight go low, and she drove the blade into the meat of his inner thigh because she knew the anatomy of the inner thigh better than she knew most things in the world, she knew exactly where to go to make a person stop moving without necessarily killing them. He shouted and went down. The second guard swung for her head, she lifted her forearm into the blow and felt the bone ring all the way up to her shoulder, the arm wasn't broken, she checked, it wasn't broken, and she drove the blade into the wrist of his weapon-hand and he dropped it and she kicked it across the floor, the sound of it was loud and flat on the stone.

She put herself between the guards and the pod.

Coda stood over the pod with his hands on the lid and his lips moving. She realized he was counting. She didn't know why and she didn't ask. Sometimes you find your own ritual in the absence of anything better.

The third guard was bigger and came in lower and got his arms around her and slammed her into the wall. Her back lit up entirely and for a moment there was only that, the flat bright fact of impact, and then she was working again, she drove the heel of her palm up into his nose from below, she had the angle for it because he was taller and she was smaller and that was just geometry, and the crunch was unambiguous, and he staggered, and she put the blade into his side, shallow but enough, enough to make him drop her. She came down on one knee. She pushed herself up.

Ardovael had not moved. She was watching Maret with an expression of what looked, strangely, like appreciation, the way you appreciate a thing you are about to destroy because you respect that it put up a fight.

"You should have been a hunter," she said.

"I know how to close what hunters open," Maret said, breathing hard. "That's always seemed more useful."

The ring flared. The clear space in the circle deepened, became less like a shimmer and more like a window, and through it Maret could see something she couldn't fully resolve, sky, different sky, blue in the way that water is blue, not pigment but depth, and a horizon that was flat and soft.

At the top of the stair, at the edge of the light from above, a figure stood and watched.

She registered the figure the way she registered a change in air pressure, an understanding before she could name the source. He was tall, and his wings were the dark color of burned bone, and the air around him moved in a way she associated with things that were very old, not age like the elders' age, not even geological age, but something else, a kind of duration that was bigger than any of those categories. She looked at him and then she couldn't look at him, not because it hurt but because her eyes slid away the way they slid away from a thought you're not ready to think. He was looking at her. She felt the look. He was not afraid and not joyful and not sad and he was very interested, the kind of interest that has been practiced long enough that it no longer needs to show itself as eagerness.

She looked away.

"Throw the spear," Ardovael said.

She heard the motion before she understood it and her body moved before her mind did. She stepped into the line of the throw. The spearhead opened her shoulder. Heat. A lot of heat, moving down her arm. She kept moving. She drove the blade into the knee of the thrower, she put everything she had left into that cut, and he fell and the second spear fell with him.

"Now," she said to Coda. "Close it. Send it."

He looked at her. His face was entirely open, all the things she had watched him keep managed for the past hour now visible at once. "What about you?"

"Now, Coda."

"Maret—"

She caught his face in her bloody hand, her good hand, the left, and she held it and made him look at her. His eyes were wet. "You can do this," she said. "One thing. Close the lid and press the send plate. That's all. You've done harder than that."

He exhaled. He pressed the lid down. The click was soft. Inside: quiet. The lights along the pod's side ran from red to amber to green to white. The cradle hummed and rose, smooth and very slow, on whatever mechanism had waited four hundred years to do this.

"If you do this," Ardovael said, her voice carrying over the ring-noise, over the creak of the cradle mechanism, over the sound of the two remaining standing guards closing in, "I will cut your name from every stone in this fortress. No one will say it. No one will record it. It will be as if you made no choice at all."

Maret looked at the pod and the small form inside it and the white lights running along the edge and she said, "I don't care." It came out raspy. She cleared her throat and said it again, the same words with more air behind them. "I don't care."

She reached past Coda and slammed her palm on the send plate.

The cradle accelerated. Not fast, precisely, but with a certainty that was worse than fast, the certainty of something doing exactly what it was built to do. The ring burned. The clear space in the circle went fully transparent for the space of two or three seconds and through it everything was visible, that soft sky, that deep-colored air, a world that did not hurt. The pod reached the edge of the circle. A guard lunged. Maret threw her body into him, they went down together, he grabbed her braid and yanked and she tore free and she was back on her feet in time to see the pod reach the circle's edge and tip forward on its rail, smooth, irresistible, and go.

It went.

The circle held for one more second. Maret saw the pod hanging in the clear space beyond, very small, turning slowly, and then the circle dimmed and the hum went from audible to felt to nothing, and the room was only stone and dust and dead machines and the smell of ash and blood.

"Close it," Ardovael said, and her voice had lost one register, not grief, not grief exactly, but something adjacent to acknowledgment. "Bring it back."

No one moved to comply because there was nothing to move to. The ring was stone. Just stone. The lines were just shallow grooves in old rock. Whatever had moved through it for those three seconds was gone, and it was not going to come back today, not this decade, maybe not this century.

Ardovael stood in the dim light and looked at the dead ring for a long moment. She looked at Maret. "You threw our blood to strangers," she said.

"I gave him a chance," Maret said. Her shoulder was flooding now, she could feel it, the heat of it spreading down toward her elbow. She pressed her good hand to it. "Maybe he'll spend it. Maybe he won't. But he'll have it."

"And you?" Ardovael said. Her voice had gone very quiet.

Maret looked at her and didn't answer.

The guards who were still standing grabbed her arms and pulled her back. Coda made a sound and moved forward and the nearest guard hit him in the gut and he bent and couldn't move. Maret pulled against the grip, once, twice, felt it hold, and stopped pulling. She lifted her head.

The figure at the top of the stair was still there. Still watching. He had not moved during any of it. His eyes were very old. They moved from the dead ring to the ash on the burner plate to her face, and there was in them that same quality she had felt before, a weighing, a counting, something tallying a long account that she would never have access to. He lifted his chin, slight, a fraction of an inclination that could have meant anything.

"Take her," Ardovael said.

They dragged her up. Her feet found the stairs and then lost them and then found them again. Her blood made marks on the stone. She didn't look back at the room. She looked up, at the opening above, the red sky coming into view, the alarms still going, the world still going, going on as if nothing had changed, though something had.

The wind came through the passage from somewhere she couldn't see and brought ash and the thin bite of altitude. She thought about the pod in the clear space beyond the ring, turning, beginning to move toward a blue horizon. She thought about a small body breathing inside it, that particular rise and fall under her palm. She thought: you'll be angry. You'll have every right. Be angry. Be alive.

She said his name once, very quietly, in the noise of the boots and the alarms, in the last second before they pulled her out into the red light.

"Vael."

Then the light was all there was.

Far from everything she knew, past the fortress and the clan floor and the thin air of the plateau, moving through a kind of space that the old engineers had opened for three seconds and then sealed, a small pod turned in the quiet. Its lights ran white along the edge. Inside it, something breathed in and out with the reliable stubbornness of new life, which has no philosophy about continuing yet, which simply does. The pod faced the blue world, full of its soft air and its crowded streets and its thousands of people who would never know what had happened in a cold room below a red sky to make this particular small life possible.

It went toward the light.

It did not know yet what it was going toward. It only went.
