Chapter 7 - What Lies Beneath

They didn't call the police.

Not yet.

The thought hung silently between them, heavy and dangerous.

Daniel found an old rusted shovel near the cellar wall. Elena's pulse thundered as he pressed it against the uneven floor.

"This could be nothing," she whispered.

But neither of them believed that.

The first strike cracked the surface.

Dust rose into the air. The sound echoed too loudly in the small space.

Daniel worked carefully, controlled. Elena watched, every breath shallow.

After a few minutes, the shovel hit something solid.

Not stone.

Not wood.

Something hollow.

Daniel knelt, brushing dirt away with his hands now.

A wooden box.

Old. Sealed. Deliberately buried.

Elena's hands trembled. "Don't open it."

But he already was.

The lid creaked as it lifted.

Inside wasn't what either of them expected.

No bones.

No jewelry.

No obvious evidence of violence.

Just papers.

Stacks of them.

Land contracts. Property transfers. Old agreements signed in 1987.

Two signatures repeated over and over.

Isabella Carter.

Matteo Moretti.

Elena felt like the air had vanished from the room.

"This wasn't just about love," Daniel said quietly.

At the bottom of the box was something smaller.

A cassette tape.

Unlabeled.

Daniel picked it up slowly.

Elena stepped back.

Whatever was on that tape had been hidden for nearly forty years.

And her grandfather had buried it.

The cellar suddenly felt smaller.

And the past didn't feel distant anymore.

It felt like it was about to speak.
