Chapter 1 - Thank You For Rejecting Me !

Chapter 1 – The Girl He Loved, The Girl Who Cried

Ren Takahashi was the kind of person people described as gentle.

At 5'8", with messy blue hair that never stayed in place no matter how much he fixed it, he looked calm. Soft-spoken. Easy to approach.

Too easy, maybe.

He wasn't loud.He wasn't popular.But he was kind.

And he had loved the same girl for years.

Aoi Nakamura.

Scarlet short hair that framed her sharp eyes.5'1", but she somehow felt taller when she walked.

She wasn't rude.

Just selective.

She could be warm. She could be kind.

But only when she chose to be.

And with Ren, she had always been kind.

Since middle school.

Since shared lunches.Since walking home together.Since promises that sounded forever.

That's why graduation day felt different.

The air was heavy with endings.

Students were hugging, crying, taking photos like memories could be frozen.

Ren spotted Aoi near the staircase railing, staring at the courtyard.

He walked up beside her.

"Tired already?" he asked softly.

She didn't look at him immediately.

"I'm tired of this school," she said with a faint smirk. "Same boring walls. Same boring people."

He smiled.

"Yeah. Same."

But today wasn't the same.

"Aoi… can we talk? Somewhere quiet."

She raised an eyebrow.

"That serious?"

He nodded.

They walked to the old courtyard behind the gym.

The bench where they used to sit during lunch in second year.

The tree that dropped leaves on her head once, and she blamed him for it.

Everything felt nostalgic.

Ren's hands felt cold.

"I've been meaning to say something for a long time."

Aoi looked at him, curious.

He swallowed.

"I like you."

Silence.

"Not as a friend. Not like before. I mean… I've liked you for years."

For a moment, she just stared at him.

Then—

She laughed.

Not softly.

"You're serious?"

He nodded.

Aoi crossed her arms.

"Ren… we've been friends forever."

"I know."

"So don't ruin that."

Her voice grew colder.

"I talk to you because you're comfortable. Safe. Don't misunderstand that."

Two girls were passing by the hallway.

They slowed down.

Aoi didn't lower her voice.

"You're important to me," she said. "But not like that. I never saw you that way."

Each word felt like something sharp pressing against his chest.

"You're kind," she added. "But that doesn't mean I owe you feelings."

One of the passing girls whispered something.

Ren felt his face burn.

"I thought you understood your place," Aoi finished quietly.

And just like that—

Years of silent hope shattered.

By evening, everyone knew.

Whispers followed him through the hallways.

He didn't stay for the graduation celebration.

He walked.

Past the bridge where Aoi once said,"We'll probably stay friends forever, right?"

He had believed that.

The sky turned dark.

Streetlights flickered on.

His phone buzzed.

Aoi.

He didn't answer.

It was around 9:45 PM when he reached the main road.

Cars passed.

Headlights blurred.

His thoughts were louder than the traffic.

"I never saw you that way."

"I thought you knew your place."

He stepped forward without looking.

A horn screamed.

White light flashed.

Impact.

And then—

Silence.

Not quiet.

Silence.

As if the world had stopped breathing.

A car door opened.

Footsteps rushed toward him.

And she appeared.

Hikari Sato.

Silver hair glowing faintly under the streetlight.5'3", small but moving with urgency.

Her eyes were soft.

Too soft for a moment like this.

She was known — though he didn't know yet — for being cheerful. For smiling easily. For being kind even when no one asked her to be.

But right now, she wasn't smiling.

She was terrified.

"Dad, call an ambulance!"

She knelt beside him, lifting his head carefully into her lap.

"I'm so sorry… please stay awake…"

Her hands trembled.

Tears fell onto his face.

She looked at him like he was something precious she had just broken.

Ren tried to focus on her.

Silver hair.

Shaking voice.

Warm hands.

And then darkness swallowed him.

Three Weeks Later

They said he was lucky.

No permanent damage.

Just rest.

But at night, he remembered a girl crying over him.

Silver hair glowing under streetlight.

Soft hands holding him like he mattered.

Sometimes he whispered,

"She was just a dream."

It had to be.

No one mentioned any girl.

Maybe his mind made her up.

First day of college.

New building.

New faces.

No Aoi.

He didn't feel sad.

Just empty.

He entered the classroom and sat near the window.

The door slid open.

He looked up—

And froze.

A silver-haired girl stepped inside.

Soft eyes.

Gentle posture.

She scanned the room nervously.

Her gaze landed on him.

Her expression shifted.

Relief.

Fear.

Guilt.

She walked toward him slowly.

Her fingers tightened around her bag strap.

She stopped beside his desk.

"Are you… Takahashi Ren?"

Her voice was gentle.

Familiar.

"I'm Hikari Sato."

She bowed slightly.

"I'm really glad you're okay."

Ren's heart started pounding.

That wasn't a dream.

She was real.

And she was looking at him exactly the same way—

Like losing him once had already hurt too much.
