Chapter 7 - The First Collapse

The city of Leicester was already fractured, streets shredded by Ruinbound incursions, structures warped and splintered by black crystalline veins that pulsed with otherworldly energy. From the edge of orbit, satellites linked to Black Parliament's command network monitored the destruction in real-time. On a secure feed, the countdown ticked mercilessly: Twenty minutes to orbital strike. The city's destruction was imminent unless something—someone—changed the trajectory of events.

Kael Ardent ran across the shattered streets, the Throne of Convergence thrumming beneath his skin. The Anchor Spire loomed before him like a wound in reality itself, black crystal spiraling impossibly toward the fissure of the Gate above the city. Veins of scarlet and violet energy pulsed in chaotic rhythm, distorting the air and bending light, creating illusions of movement where there was none. He could feel the pull of the Flaw, the inevitable convergence of catastrophe and opportunity, every event in Leicester now revolving around him.

The gates of the Anchor Spire opened before him, revealing the core chamber. The floor rippled like liquid obsidian, black crystal veins converging at the center, forming the Anchor Core itself. The air was thick, almost suffocating, vibrating with the energy of the Gate above. Shadows bent and twisted unnaturally, projecting phantom limbs and faces that vanished when Kael turned his gaze.

And then it appeared.

Through the partially materialized Gate, a Sovereign manifested. Its form was colossal, multi-limbed, towering above the chamber with an aura that distorted reality. Waves of distortion radiated outward, warping space and bending light, shaking the very foundations of the Spire. Each limb flexed with independent intelligence, its core radiating impossible energy that made the chamber tremble. This was not a creature. This was a force of existence.

[Threat Level: Absolute – Sovereign detected][Recommended Engagement: Not viable – conventional combat impossible]

Kael's instincts screamed. No strategy, no conventional combat, could hope to overcome this entity. Every strike he could deliver, every maneuver he could make, would be trivial against the Sovereign's sheer scale and reality-warping presence. The Throne pulsed violently, screaming warnings: Convergence overload imminent. Flaw Activation Threshold reached. Structural failure imminent.

Magnus Hale appeared at the chamber entrance with a squad of enforcers, eyes wide beneath his helmet. "Anomaly!" he shouted. "Extraction now! The core is unstable!" But Kael did not pause. His gaze fixed on the Anchor Core, energy thrumming, pulsing, feeding both the Gate and the Spire. There was only one path forward.

Lira appeared beside Magnus, but unlike the enforcers, she did not move to retreat. Her eyes burned with stubborn determination. "I am not leaving," she said. "If you are going to defy the Gate, then I face it with you."

Kael's decision crystallized. He activated the Throne at maximum output and reached out with the Devour Protocol. Energy coiled outward, lashing toward the Anchor Core. The system screamed inside his mind: WARNING. Devour Protocol – Anchor Core unstable. Convergence overload. Reality instability imminent. The Flaw tugged at him violently. Fate, catastrophe, and opportunity all collided in a singular point.

Kael forced his consciousness into the core itself. The black energy of the Spire writhed, resisting, but the Throne amplified his will, overriding natural law. Crystal veins tore inward, energy spiraled outward, and the Sovereign's gaze shifted entirely toward him. Distortion waves struck the chamber, bending gravity and light, but Kael's reinforced body absorbed it all.

Magnus broke into the chamber, raising a hand to shield the enforcers as reality itself began to twist around them. Lira moved alongside Kael, her aura flaring in defiance, absorbing some of the energy backlash. The chamber groaned, crystal walls fracturing, pieces of black matter raining down as Kael's body coiled with the Throne's output, devouring not only the Anchor Core but its surrounding lattice of energy and structure.

The Spire shuddered violently, black veins snapping, the chamber collapsing inward. The Gate pulsed uncontrollably, destabilizing, tendrils of energy writhing outward toward the city. At the same time, from orbit, Black Parliament's countdown reached its final seconds—but the orbital strike aborted automatically. Sensors recorded the sudden collapse of the Spire as its energy field disintegrated, erasing the target signature just in time. Leicester remained, half destroyed but not obliterated.

Kael fell to the fractured floor, unconscious, his body still glowing faintly from the energy he had absorbed. Lira knelt beside him, her hand on his chest, breathing heavy but resolute. Magnus surveyed the scene, grim, noting the scale of devastation yet recognizing survival against impossible odds.

Beyond the shattered remnants of the Gate, far into the void of space where light bent around the residual rifts, ancient Thrones stirred. They sensed the Convergence event, a disruption on a scale rarely observed. Slowly, inexorably, their attention turned toward Earth. The first tremors of cosmic awareness had arrived, and the stage for the next cycle of conflict was set.

Leicester lay in ruins, Kael remained unconscious, and the universe had begun to notice.
