Chapter 2 - The Man Who Remembered

The forest changed the deeper they walked.

Moonlight filtered through silver branches, painting the ground in pale blue shadows. The air smelled of frost and wildflowers, sharp and clean, yet heavy with unseen magic.

Lyra struggled to keep pace with Cael.

He moved silently, confidently—like someone who belonged to danger.

Like someone trained to survive it.

She watched the way his hand never strayed far from the sword at his side.

Watched how his gaze constantly scanned the darkness.

He wasn't just guiding her.

He was guarding her.

Finally, she broke the silence.

"Are we being chased?"

Cael didn't look back.

"Yes."

Her stomach dropped.

"By what?"

A pause.

"…Things that shouldn't find you yet."

Yet.

That word lingered uncomfortably.

Lyra quickened her steps until she walked beside him.

"You keep talking like you know who I am."

His jaw tightened.

"I know who you were."

The correction stung more than she expected.

"And now?"

He glanced at her briefly.

Something softer flickered there.

"…I don't know who you are now."

The honesty surprised her.

They walked in silence again, broken only by the rustle of glowing leaves beneath their feet.

Lyra wrapped her arms around herself.

"You said I shouldn't be here. Where should I be?"

Cael exhaled slowly, as if choosing each word carefully.

"Hidden."

"From who?"

This time he stopped walking.

The sudden stillness made the forest feel louder.

Alive.

He turned toward her fully.

Moonlight caught his face, revealing exhaustion carved deep into his features.

"From an empire that fears you."

Her breath faltered.

"Why would anyone fear me?"

His gaze dropped to the glowing sigil on her arm.

The symbol pulsed faintly, reacting to his attention.

"Because," he said quietly, "you once held power capable of ending kingdoms."

Lyra stared at him.

Then laughed nervously.

"You're joking."

He didn't smile.

The laughter died instantly.

"…I don't even remember how to walk without tripping," she muttered. "How could I destroy kingdoms?"

Something painful crossed his expression.

"You didn't destroy them," he said. "You saved them."

The words landed heavily between them.

Before she could ask more, a sharp crack echoed through the trees.

Cael's head snapped toward the sound.

His hand grabbed her wrist instinctively.

The moment his skin touched hers—

Heat surged through her body.

A flash exploded behind her eyes.

Starlight.

Laughter.

His voice whispering close to her ear—

Stay with me, Lyra.

She gasped and jerked away.

The vision vanished.

Both of them froze.

Cael looked shaken.

More shaken than she felt.

"…Did you see something?" he asked carefully.

Lyra hesitated.

Her heart pounded wildly.

"I—I don't know. Maybe."

He studied her face intensely, hope flickering before he forced it away.

The forest trembled again.

A low growl rolled through the shadows.

Not animal.

Not human.

Lyra felt it in her bones.

Fear.

Cael cursed under his breath.

"They found us faster than I thought."

Dark shapes moved between the trees—tall, shifting figures made of smoke and clawed light.

Lyra stepped closer to him instinctively.

"What are those?"

His voice dropped.

Cold. Deadly.

"Seekers."

One creature lunged forward, its hollow eyes glowing silver.

Cael drew his sword in one smooth motion. The blade ignited with faint blue fire.

He moved in front of her without hesitation.

"Stay behind me."

The command felt natural—as if she had heard it countless times before.

The creature attacked.

Cael met it head-on.

Steel clashed against shadow, sparks scattering like falling stars. He fought with precise, brutal grace, every movement controlled.

Lyra watched, breathless.

He wasn't just skilled.

He was lethal.

Another Seeker emerged behind them.

Lyra turned just as it reached for her.

Fear surged—

And something inside her answered.

Light burst from her palm.

Pure, radiant starlight exploded outward, striking the creature and sending it dissolving into shimmering dust.

Silence followed.

Even the forest seemed stunned.

Lyra stared at her glowing hands.

"…I did that."

Cael lowered his sword slowly.

A mixture of awe and dread filled his expression.

"Yes," he murmured. "You did."

The light faded, leaving her trembling.

"I don't know how."

He stepped closer carefully, as if approaching something sacred.

"Your magic remembers," he said softly. "Even if you don't."

Another distant howl echoed.

More Seekers.

Too many.

Cael grabbed her hand again—this time deliberately.

"We don't have time. There's a sanctuary nearby."

Lyra met his eyes.

Trust came strangely easily.

"You're not going to leave me, right?"

The question slipped out before she could stop it.

His expression changed.

Something vulnerable surfaced beneath his guarded exterior.

A promise he had made once before.

"…Never," he said quietly.

And this time—

He didn't let go of her hand as they ran into the night.
