Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Echoes of Applause

Elara stood up from the wobbly stool, her legs feeling like jelly. She offered a small, awkward bow, her face burning with a mixture of embarrassment and a strange, bubbling joy.

As she walked back to the booth, Julian intercepted her. He was holding a small plate with a slice of warm cherry pie.

I think that's the best that old hunk of wood has sounded in twenty years," he said, handing her the plate. "On the house. For the performance."

Elara took the plate, offering a deep, grateful nod. She touched her throat, then pointed to the pie, pantomiming a 'thank you'.

"You're very welcome," Julian said softly. "You know, Elias told me you were quiet, but he didn't tell me you were loud where it counts."

The words struck a chord deep within her. *Loud where it counts.* She returned to the booth, sinking into the leather seat next to Sarah. Lily was practically vibrating with excitement. "You did it! You played the scary part for everyone!"

That was incredibly moving, Elara," Sarah said softly, placing a hand over hers. "I don't know much about music, but I know what heartbreak sounds like. That was beautiful."

Elara felt a tear slip down her cheek, but she quickly wiped it away, smiling. For the first time, crying didn't feel like drowning; it felt like a release.

She spent another hour at the bakery, listening to Sarah talk about the village, watching Lily draw pictures on napkins, and occasionally catching Julian's eye from across the counter. It was normal. It was delightfully, wonderfully mundane.

When she finally walked back to Glenwood Cottage, the afternoon sun was casting long, golden shadows across the dirt lane. The air felt lighter. She felt lighter.

She opened the door to the cottage and immediately walked to the upright piano in the corner. The blank sheet music was still there, waiting. She sat down and picked up the pencil.

She had the beginning, and she had the storm. Because of the bakery, because of Lily and Sarah and Julian, she finally knew what came after the storm.

She knew how the song was going to end. It wouldn't end in silence. It would end in healing.
