Chapter 27 - Chapter 27

The sun, slowly but surely, began to set, painting the sky in warm golden-orange hues. Finn, overcoming the pain in every step, finally reached his destination, and a human settlement spread out on the horizon met his gaze. The sight of clear, ordered structures evoked a strange feeling in him – something between relief and anxiety.

He wanted to smile, but his facial muscles seemed to have forgotten how. He had been alone for too long, fought for survival for too long. Now, standing on the threshold of human habitation, Finn felt like a stranger, undeserving of joy. He remembered the faces of monsters, their bestial fury, but the faces of people, their emotions – all of it eluded his memory. The boy understood that he looked wild and frightening to these strangers, and he inwardly shrank at the realization that he might inspire fear or rejection in them.

Nevertheless, Finn forced himself to move forward, deeper into the unfamiliar settlement. The tulwar, his faithful companion, was still in his hand, but the blade's light seemed dim, as if reflecting the boy's inner state. This weapon, once his only defense and support, now seemed alien and out of place in the peaceful town he had entered.

The signs on the houses and shops caught his attention, but little told him of their purpose. Finn saw that the inhabitants of this place were engaged in crafts, trade, and agriculture – as evidenced by the signs depicting various goods and services. However, most of these designations were unfamiliar to him, and he only vaguely guessed at their meaning.

One sign, however, caught his eye – it bore an engraving of a human ear and an inscription offering an exchange. Finn remembered the bag of trophies lying inside his backpack. These ears, once so repulsive, now seemed familiar, even necessary. They had become part of his trials, his victories, his survival. Perhaps here, in this unfamiliar place, they could be of use to him.

Approaching this unusual establishment, the boy heard sounds emanating from within – lively human conversation, laughter, quarrels, and reconciliations. These voices, so unfamiliar and yet so familiar, made him slow his pace. Finn froze for a moment, simply listening to this cacophony of sounds, trying to believe that it wasn't another trick of his tormented mind. He greedily absorbed these sounds, feeling the longing for human connection grow in his soul.

Finally, he resolutely pulled the door open and stepped across the threshold of the tavern. A deathly silence reigned inside – such a sharp change that for a moment Finn felt as if he were back in the dark caves. But, looking around, he realized that this was simply a new, unfamiliar place, full of people who were now all staring at him.

The tavern he entered was a spacious, well-lit room. Wooden tables and benches were arranged in a chaotic order, creating an atmosphere of coziness and hospitality. Shelves lined the walls, filled with various bottles and mugs. Behind a massive bar, a middle-aged man bustled about, clearly the owner or worker of this establishment.

Slowly, dragging the tulwar behind him, Finn walked deeper into the room. The tavern patrons whispered, casting wary glances at him, as if fearing the stranger in their cozy establishment. The boy felt the tension in the hall grow with each step he took, but he stubbornly continued to move forward, hoping that someone among these people could help him.

Reaching the bar, Finn met the gaze of the middle-aged man standing behind it. He emerged from his stupor, noticing the boy's gesture. The boy brought a finger to his open mouth.

Having finished his narrative, Finn turned his head towards the mug, which was already filled with the life-giving nectar. He drank it down in one gulp, relieving the dryness in his throat. And the long-eared Adam simply watched and listened calmly.

"Well... you've had it rough, Finn," Adam said thoughtfully. "You mentioned the darkness that consumed you. Can you tell me more about the emotions you experienced at that moment?"

Finn hesitated for a moment, gathering his thoughts.

"It was... despair," he began quietly. "I was furious, I wanted to survive at any cost. And... it felt like the whole world had collapsed on me, and the only way out was this rage that was bursting out."

Adam nodded, listening intently.

"I understand. Your will to survive awakened something more in you than just physical strength. This darkness you speak of – it was your last refuge at that moment."

He paused for a moment, as if contemplating something.

"You must have wondered why we saved you, right?" Adam's serious gaze shifted to Finn. "The thing is, you carry something special within you. My family knows that the ability, the darkness that erupted from your body, is more than just a manifestation of power."

Finn looked at Adam with wide eyes, trying to comprehend his words.

"What do you mean?" he asked, feeling a chill run down his spine. "I don't understand."

Adam raised his hand, urging him to calm down.

"Don't rush. Everything in its own time. For now, you need to rest and regain your strength."

He moved closer and placed his hand on the boy's shoulder again.

"We've been waiting a long time for your appearance. Many of us had lost hope, but here you are, before us."

Finn felt a mixture of feelings swirling inside him – fear, confusion.

"Why?" he asked quietly, meeting the long-eared one's gaze.

Adam smiled, his eyes radiating warmth and confidence.

"Don't ask questions you're not ready to hear the answers to. You're exhausted, and now you need to rest and regain your strength. And when the time comes, I'll give you the opportunity to get answers to all your questions."

He squeezed Finn's shoulder tighter, as if conveying his support.

"You've passed your first trial. Now you'll learn what kind of power lives within you. But we'll talk about that later. For now, you need to gain strength."

Finn nodded, feeling the tension gradually recede. All of this was so sudden and incomprehensible, but in Adam's presence, he felt safe. Perhaps here, in this strange place, he would finally find answers to his questions.

Adam led Finn to a separate hut on the outskirts of the settlement, as cozy and comfortable as the other dwellings of this clan.

"Here is your temporary abode," he said, opening the door. "Here you can rest and regain your strength. And tomorrow, this woman will take care of you."

At that moment, as Finn turned, he saw an extra figure, a leader in a combat kimono, whom the boy had already forgotten; she was still there, moving silently.

Finn cautiously surveyed the small but cozy room. Simple wooden furniture, a clean bed – everything created an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

"Thank you," he said quietly, turning to Adam.

Adam smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Rest, gain strength. We have a lot to do tomorrow."

With these words, he left with the leader in the combat kimono, leaving Finn alone. The boy wearily sank onto the edge of the bed, feeling the tension gradually leave his body. Here, in this quiet and cozy place, he could finally allow himself to relax.

Finn lay wearily on the edge of the bed, but despite his fatigue, sleep wouldn't come. He tossed and turned, trying to get comfortable, but the soft bed seemed unfamiliar after long nights spent on the hard stone floor of the dungeons. Accustomed to harsh conditions, Finn couldn't relax.

His gaze accidentally fell on a small lamp, faintly flickering in the darkness of the room. Its dim glow reminded him of his faithful sword, the tulwar, which had been taken by those people. Finn sighed, remembering how tightly he had gripped the hilt of that sword, feeling its strength and reliability, how he had hugged the tulwar's blade in his sleep, warming himself with its heat. And now, in a safe place, he felt lost without this... now familiar weapon.

Giving in to impulse, Finn got out of bed, took the lamp, and settled on the floor, leaning his back against the wall. Hugging the fragile object, he pressed it to his chest, as if trying to find a substitute for his lost sword in its warmth. Gradually, the tension began to recede, and Finn finally fell asleep.

As soon as the boy plunged into Morpheus's embrace, the hut came alive. The lamp began to glow a little brighter, but at the same time, it began to emit a pleasant warmth. The floor beneath Finn imperceptibly transformed, becoming covered with soft green leaves, creating a cozy bed for him. However, this seemed insufficient, and a moment later, leaves emerged from beneath the floor, covering Finn like a blanket, enveloping him in their green shroud.
