Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2: THE CRIMSON ANOMALY

The air in the Academy's hallway was thick with the scent of sterile rain and iron. Hundreds of students moved in perfect, rhythmic synchronization—a river of gray shadows. In this world, to stand out was to be broken. To feel was to be hunted.

I kept my head down, but my peripheral vision was on fire. She was walking twenty paces ahead of me.

Every step she took seemed to leave a faint, glowing ember on the dull floor—a trail of crimson that only I could see. To everyone else, she was Elara, the Director's daughter, the pinnacle of the "Ideal Gray." But to me, she was a walking sun in a world of ash.

"Stop staring, Kaisen," Zyro's voice hissed in my ear. He was walking beside me, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. "You're leaking 'Pulse.' If the sensors pick up your heart rate, they'll send you to the Re-education Ward before the first bell rings."

"I'm not staring," I lied, my throat dry.

"Your pupils are dilated. You're looking at her as if she's the answer to a question you're too afraid to ask," Zyro countered, his eyes scanning the ceiling-mounted cameras. "She's the Director's masterpiece. She has no heart, Kaisen. They say she was the first child born after the 'Great Fade' who never shed a single tear."

Suddenly, the crowd ahead came to a halt. Elara had stopped in front of the Great Hall's heavy mahogany doors. She turned slightly, and for the first time, our eyes met.

The world screamed.

It wasn't just her hair. Her eyes were deep, turbulent pools of violet—another color that shouldn't exist. For a split second, the gray walls of the hallway seemed to vibrate, turning into a kaleidoscope of forgotten hues. The static in my brain cleared, replaced by a melody I didn't know I knew.

She didn't smile. She didn't frown. She simply looked through me, as if I were a ghost. Then, she dropped a small, silver locket. It hit the floor with a silent thud, unnoticed by the unfeeling crowd.

As she disappeared into the hall, the "Color" she carried began to dim. The hallway started returning to its suffocating charcoal state.

Without thinking, I broke the rhythm. I stepped out of the line—a cardinal sin in the Academy.

"Kaisen! What are you doing?" Zyro grabbed my arm, his grip like a vice. "Get back in line! The Enforcers are watching!"

"She dropped something," I whispered, shaking him off.

I knelt and picked up the locket. The moment my skin touched the cold metal, a jolt of pure, electric Orange surged through my arm. It was a memory—a flash of a burning sunset, a mother's laugh, and the smell of jasmine.

I gasped, dropping to my knees. The sensors on the wall turned from white to a blinking, aggressive Yellow.

[WARNING: EMOTIONAL SPIKE DETECTED. SECTOR 4.]

"Idiot!" Zyro cursed, shielding me with his body from the cameras. "Give it to me and get up! Now!"

I clutched the locket tighter. The color was fading from the metal, turning back to gray, but the heat stayed in my palm. I looked toward the doors where Elara had vanished.

She wasn't just a girl. She was a key. And I had just picked up the lock.
