Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: Clue

The next morning arrived with soft golden light spilling over the slum rooftops.

Karen logged into Divine Descent early, with a small portable screen set up beside him. Ella sat propped up in the clinic bed, her face bright with excitement, watching his every move in the game.

The guild chat was already buzzing. Wings of Liberty had held the top rank in the village all night, and dozens of new players had sent application requests.

"Ghost Wolf, you're finally here," Sophia said, her avatar walking toward him in the village square. "The elder has been asking for you. He said the relic left a message—something about a clue."

Karen's eyes narrowed. "A clue about what?"

"About the GCV virus. About the game's real purpose."

Ella leaned closer to the screen. "Is it about me?"

"Maybe," Karen said softly. "Let's find out."

They gathered the core team and headed to the village elder's wooden hut. The old NPC sat on a straw mat, his eyes closed, his fingers tracing the gene runes carved into his table.

"You have been chosen," he said without opening his eyes. "The relic did not just give you power. It gave you a truth."

He pushed forward a tattered ancient scroll.

Karen unfurled it. The words were written in faded ink, depicting a massive tower beyond the mountains, a hidden laboratory, and a symbol that matched the logo of the Morgan Consortium.

"The source of the corruption is not natural," the elder said. "It was made. The virus, the game, the relics… all are parts of one plan."

Jason's face darkened. "You're saying the Consortium created GCV?"

"Not just them," the elder replied. "But those who control them. The tower holds the records. The records hold the cure."

A system message appeared:

New Quest Unlocked: The Lost BlueprintFind the hidden research notes in the Ironspine Mountains.Danger Level: High

Sophia folded her arms. "The Ironspine Mountains are level 15–20 territory. We're only level 9. We're not ready."

"We don't have a choice," Karen said. "This clue could lead to a real cure for Ella. Not just suppression. A cure."

The team fell silent.

Hawk was the first to nod. "If it's for her, we go."

Tank grunted in agreement. "We're strong enough together."

Blaze and Frost exchanged a look, then smiled. "We've come this far. We're not stopping now."

Jason clapped Karen on the shoulder. "You led us through the temple. You can lead us through mountains."

Sophia sighed, but a small smile appeared on her face. "Fine. But we prepare first. Potions, armor upgrades, food buffs. No more rushing into death traps."

Karen agreed. For the first time, he was not fighting alone. He was fighting with people who trusted him.

For the next three hours, the guild prepared.

Tank bought a reinforced shield. Hawk stocked up on ice-enchanted arrows. Blaze and Frost crafted advanced area spells. Jason purchased stealth potions. Sophia upgraded the guild's shared storage with healing items.

Karen stood at the blacksmith's shop, staring at his glowing sword.

Ella's voice came through the speaker. "You look like a hero."

He smiled. "I'm just a brother."

As the sun climbed to its peak, the team gathered at the village gate. The path to the Ironspine Mountains stretched before them, winding through rocky hills and dangerous monster zones.

Sophia raised her sword. "Wings of Liberty, move out!"

The team marched forward.

Karen walked at the front, his senses sharp. He knew the road ahead would be filled with monsters, rival guilds, and secrets that could destroy everything.

But he also knew he was no longer running from fate.

He was chasing the truth.

And the first clue had just been unlocked.
