Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9: My brother's confession

After breakfast, nobles and visiting families went to the gardens for recreation. Erika moved with confidence. Her posture and demeanor were flawless. The black crow flitted nearby. The black cat slinked through shadows. Their subtle signals reminded Erika that some guests were more observant than they appeared.

She pressed her fingers against the pendant at her collarbone. The necklace shimmered. Magic maintained the illusion. The Duchess Elara Valenwood was perfect: untouchable, elegant, and captivating.

News traveled quickly. In two weeks, the royal ball would be held. Guests from all major islands, magical and mortal, would attend. The event would gather nobles, investors, and collectors of rare treasures. They would contribute to a special project sponsored by the crown. Whispers filled the castle. Some guessed at alliances forming. Others guessed at secrets waiting to be revealed.

Erika's mind raced. In two weeks, she would be surrounded by the most powerful figures of the archipelago. With Leonardo at her side, the crow and black cat watching, and her father's magic at her throat, she could move unseen, influence carefully, and plant seeds that would grow unnoticed.

Leonardo's Confession.

As the morning sun warmed the garden paths, Leonardo reached her side. His hands were steady, and his gaze was sincere.

"Sophia… I've been meaning to tell you," he said softly. Erika felt her pulse quicken.

"I… I like you," he continued, voice low but clear. "More than a friend."

Erika's heart skipped. Beneath the mask of Duchess Sophia, her cheeks tinged with color. The black cat, perched nearby, twitched its tail knowingly. Erika leaned close, whispering, "I… I feel it too."

A mischievous flicker in the cat's green eyes seemed to offer silent advice. Erika straightened. She kept her composure and allowed only a small, secret smile.

The Floating Boat

That afternoon, Leonardo invited her on a small boat along the palace gardens' canals. The water shimmered like liquid sapphire. Petals of floating lilies drifted lazily around them. Erika consulted the black cat silently, seeking guidance for the perfect poise.

They glided across the mirrored water. Laughter flowed naturally like the ripples. Glances were exchanged. Playful touches were careful yet intimate.

Beneath a trellis of climbing roses, Leonardo leaned in and kissed her gently.

Erika froze. Crimson spread across her cheeks. Embarrassment overwhelmed her. She pulled away. "I… I need to—" she whispered. Then she bolted from the boat, racing up the castle stairs to her private room.

The black cat followed silently. Its tail flicked as if approving her escape. Erika leaned against the cool wall. Her heart still pounded. She let out a soft, flustered laugh. Even in disguise, some truths were impossible to hide.

As the sun dipped, gilding the palace walls in rose and gold, Erika paused on a balcony. The lower quarter glimmered faintly beneath her gaze. Lanterns reflected the ongoing struggle between wealth and hardship. Zoe watched silently from across the courtyard, elegant in midnight blue. Erika's spell held. The animals reminded her that careful observation was key. Zoe's intuition was sharp. The smallest misstep could unravel the disguise.

Leonardo stood beside her, a steadfast companion. Erika's pulse steadied. The game had grown larger: the royal ball, the island's inequalities, the hidden agendas of investors and nobles. She was ready.

With the black cat and crow at her side, the strategy of disguise, influence, and subtle intervention had begun. In two weeks, the Royal Ball would test her abilities, her magic, and her understanding of power.

The necklace pulsed softly at her throat. Royal Novelty Island had seen Erika's arrival. But it had yet to witness the force she could become.

The game was no longer just observation. It was orchestration.

Erika, masquerading as Duchess Sophia, was prepared to face it all.
