Chapter 2 - The Blooming of a Noble Lady

The long-awaited day of Lady Kimberly's debut at the Theodore Ballroom had finally arrived.

Kimberly stood before her vanity as her maids attended to her. Among them was Sophie, her most trusted maid, who had remained faithfully by her side since childhood. Sophie was the daughter of the nanny who had raised Kimberly from infancy.

"Are you happy, My Lady?" Sophie asked gently as she adjusted the lace of Kimberly's gown.

"Of course I am," Kimberly replied softly. "And yet… I cannot help but feel nervous."

"You must not be, My Lady," Sophie said brightly. "Tonight, we shall make you the most beautiful lady in the entire ballroom."

"That will suffice. Focus on your task," came the firm voice of the head maid, Madam Sally.

Kimberly and Sophie exchanged knowing smiles.

Just then, a knock sounded at the chamber door. It opened to reveal her elder brother, Lord Keaton, leaning casually against the frame with a warm smile.

"Brother!" Kimberly exclaimed, rushing into his arms. "I feared you would not come."

"And miss my precious sister's debut?"

Keaton replied with a soft chuckle. "How could I possibly not come?"

"It has been five months since I last saw you," he added proudly. "And now you have grown into a fine young lady."

Kimberly stepped back and performed a graceful curtsy. "I am Lady Kimberly, daughter of Viscount Theodore," she declared playfully.

Keaton laughed heartily. "Yes, yes. Your courtesy has improved remarkably."

"I know," she replied with pride. "Thanks to my etiquette tutor, I have become far more confident."

"Lady Kimberly, we are not yet finished," Madam Sally reminded her.

"Oh! Forgive me, Brother. We shall speak again later," Kimberly said hastily, returning to her seat.

Keaton watched her fondly, shaking his head in amusement.

Meanwhile, in the grand ballroom, Viscount Theodore and Viscountess Marylin welcomed their esteemed guests. The hall was magnificently adorned, every detail personally overseen by the Viscountess herself.

"You have outdone yourself, my dear," said Viscount Theodore admiringly.

"Of course I have," Viscountess Marylin replied with pride.

"This night is once in our daughter's lifetime."

"Our daughter has come of age…" Theodore murmured with a trace of melancholy. "It saddens me."

"She must grow, my lord," his wife reminded him gently. Theodore nodded, though the wistfulness remained in his eyes.

Soon after, the grand doors opened.

Kimberly descended the staircase in a soft pink gown, her hair half-braided and flowing like something from a fairy tale. The once lively chatter of the hall fell into reverent silence as all eyes turned toward her.

"Behold the star of this evening," Viscount Theodore announced proudly. "My daughter, Lady Kimberly."

Whispers filled the hall.

"I never imagined the Viscount's daughter would become such a beauty."

"She resembles the former Viscount and Viscountess in their youth. They were known as the most popular couple at the Academy."

"And her brother, the heir, is equally striking. I hear many young ladies hope to catch his attention tonight."

Kimberly reached her father's arm and faced the assembly with poise.

"My Lords and Ladies, honored guests," she began clearly, "I thank you for gracing our estate with your presence this evening. Your attendance brings immense joy to my family and to me."

"Today marks my coming of age. I stand before you with gratitude and humility. I have been blessed with loving guidance, and I hope to uphold the values of kindness, dignity, and sincerity that I have been taught."

"As I step into this new chapter of my life, I do so with hope — to grow into a lady worthy of my family's name and to form cherished friendships among you. I thank you for sharing this beautiful evening. Please, enjoy the celebration."

The hall erupted in applause.

Soon, families approached to offer their congratulations. Kimberly smiled graciously, yet her eyes searched the crowd for one particular figure — one she held dear.

Where are you, Rafael? she wondered.

But he was nowhere to be seen.

"Congratulations on your debut," came a voice edged with arrogance.

Lady Patricia Eldrick, daughter of Baron Eldrick, approached with her companions, her fan partially concealing her face. Patricia had long envied Kimberly since their days at the Academy.

"Thank you, Lady Patricia," Kimberly replied with calm courtesy.

"I trust you are enjoying the evening."

"I hear you are engaged to Duke Rafael," one of Patricia's friends interjected.

"Is it true?"

"No," Kimberly answered firmly yet politely. "We have been friends since childhood. I respect him deeply, especially after his victory in the war alongside Prince Alberto."

"But surely you are more than friends," another lady insisted.

"He treats you differently from other ladies. It seems… suspicious."

"I fail to understand your meaning," Kimberly said evenly.

"Is it not natural that we treat different people in different ways? That does not imply impropriety."

Her composed response silenced them.

"Well, if you are not engaged, that is fortunate," Patricia said smugly.

"I have heard that he is to marry a noble lady from another kingdom."

Kimberly frowned slightly.

"Really!?" her companions also shocked by what their heard.

"It is but rumor, is it not?" another voice interjected smoothly.

Lady Cecile Adrian, daughter of the Earl of Adrian and Kimberly's dearest friend, approached with dignified calm.

"You must be cautious with such claims, Lady Patricia." Cecile said coolly.

"To spread false rumors about a Duke borders dangerously on treason."

Patricia stiffened.

"Let go, Lady. If you may excuses us." she muttered before sweeping away with her companions.

"Are you well?" Cecile asked softly.

Kimberly smiled faintly.

"Thank you. Had you not arrived, I do not know how I might have answered them."

"I suspected as much when I saw them approach you," Cecile replied with a light laugh.

Then her expression softened. "I did not see him tonight. Did he inform you he would not attend?"

"He promised he would come," Kimberly said quietly. "Yet his name has not been announced."

Cecile gently squeezed her shoulder. "Then he shall surely arrive."

At that moment, Sophie approached, holding a sealed letter with visible anxiety.

"Forgive the interruption, My Lady," she said.

"A letter has just arrived from Duke Rafael, delivered by his knight."

Kimberly's heart tightened as she accepted the letter.

"Cecile, please excuse me," she said softly.

Cecile nodded.

With growing unease, Lady Kimberly stepped away from the festivities and made her way alone toward the quiet balcony.
