Chapter 2 – First Light

The first stirrings of consciousness came as a faint pressure at the base of Lin Yue's temples. Her eyelids fluttered, heavy and reluctant, struggling to rise against days of stillness. The room was dim, filled with the soft glow of evening lanterns, and the quiet hum of the village outside.

A gentle hand rested on her shoulder. "Careful… take your time," a calm voice said. Lin Yue's eyes opened slowly, hazy and uncertain. The room was unfamiliar — walls painted in soft colors, shelves lined with objects she did not recognize: smooth vessels, thin panels reflecting light, and curious little boxes. Each item was a mystery, each shadow foreign.

The woman knelt beside her, concern etched across her face. "Are you alright? Can you speak?"

Lin Yue tried, but her throat was dry, her voice fragile. A weak sound escaped, barely more than a whisper.

The man stepped closer. "Do you know your name? Where you come from?" he asked gently, measuring every word.

Lin Yue's brows furrowed. She opened her mouth, then closed it. A strange emptiness filled her mind — no recollection of her name, no memory of her past, nothing she could offer. Her hands clenched instinctively, searching for something familiar, yet finding only confusion.

She shook her head faintly. The couple exchanged a glance, surprise and concern mingling in their eyes.

"You… don't even know who you are?" the woman asked softly.

Lin Yue could only remain silent, the weight of nothingness pressing against her. Her jade pendant rested against her chest, pulsing faintly with a quiet energy, though to the couple it was just a delicate ornament — a beautiful, curious piece of jewelry. They had no idea the force it held, or the miracle it had performed in keeping her alive these past days.

The man crouched beside her, examining her gently. "Alright… that's fine. We'll take it slow. Don't worry. You're safe here."

The woman added, "We'll help you regain your strength first. After that… we'll try to figure out who you are."

Lin Yue's gaze drifted across the room. Everything was strange and unfamiliar, yet she felt a faint pull toward life — toward understanding — that she could not explain. Her senses were alert, her body fragile, her mind a haze of confusion and curiosity.

Hours passed. The retired couple guided her with patience and care. They helped her sit, sip warm tea, and eat small portions of food. Every movement was deliberate, gentle, and full of caution. Lin Yue observed silently, taking in the details of the modern world: the smooth surfaces, the quiet hum of unseen mechanisms, the warm lantern light reflecting softly against polished wood.

By the time night fell, she sat by the window, wrapped in blankets. The jade pendant glimmered faintly against her chest, its soft light unnoticed by the couple, who were still processing the strange discovery that the young woman before them had no memory of herself. Outside, the village slept beneath a sky of stars, while inside, a story began to unfold — delicate, mysterious, and full of suspense, the first threads of destiny weaving silently around a girl lost to time.
