Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight

Origin

Julie received the message at 11:17 p.m.

If you want the complete Origin files, come alone.

No sender ID.

Just coordinates.

An abandoned warehouse along the Hudson.

She didn't tell Andrew.

She didn't tell Ethan.

She went alone.

The interior smelled of rust and river damp.

Footsteps echoed.

Victor Hale stepped into the low light.

"Mrs. Scott," he greeted smoothly.

"Why am I here?"

"Because you're no longer useful in ignorance."

She crossed her arms.

"Start talking."

Victor walked slowly, hands clasped behind his back.

"Project Origin began as a liability shield. Environmental cleanups, political funding, offshore redirection."

"My father discovered falsified remediation reports."

"Yes."

"And you decided to silence him."

"We decided," Victor corrected.

"You and Andrew."

Victor's smile thinned.

"You misunderstand hierarchy."

Her pulse quickened.

"Explain."

"Andrew inherited Origin when he assumed majority control of Scott Enterprises. It existed before him."

The ground beneath her certainty shifted.

"He approved it."

"He consolidated it."

"And my parents?"

"Collateral."

The word struck like a physical blow.

"He could have stopped it."

"He didn't have the leverage yet."

Rage burned through her.

"So you're the architect."

"We are the structure."

Footsteps echoed again.

Slow. Measured.

Andrew emerged from the shadows.

"You shouldn't have contacted her," he said to Victor.

Victor regarded him coolly.

"She deserves context."

Julie turned to Andrew.

"Is it true?"

He held her gaze.

"Yes."

The honesty stunned her.

"You were consolidating power," she whispered.

"To dismantle it," he said.

She searched his face for deception.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you would have left."

The rawness in his voice unsettled her.

Victor observed them both.

"This is precisely why attachment is inefficient."

Andrew's tone hardened.

"You'll step down."

Victor laughed quietly.

"The vote is already scheduled."

"Cancel it."

"You're no longer indispensable."

Silence thickened.

Julie looked between them.

"They're removing you."

Andrew didn't deny it.

Victor's eyes sharpened.

"And when that happens, Mrs. Scott, your protection evaporates."

The threat was subtle but unmistakable.

Andrew stepped forward.

"She remains untouched."

Victor studied him.

"You're choosing her over the structure."

Andrew didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

The word echoed in the hollow space.

Victor's expression cooled.

"Then you're expendable."

Sirens wailed faintly in the distance.

Victor glanced toward the sound.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Andrew."

"I'm ending one."

Victor turned to leave.

"This concludes tomorrow."

When he was gone, silence filled the warehouse.

Julie looked at Andrew.

"You never told me you were planning to dismantle Origin."

"You wouldn't have believed me."

"And now?"

"I don't know if you will."

She stared at him.

"You let them kill my parents."

His jaw tightened.

"I wasn't strong enough then."

"And now?"

"I am."

She studied him carefully.

For the first time, she saw something beneath the billionaire armor.

Guilt.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But real.
