[Greek Mythology] Night
Act. 08
Act. 08
Several days have passed since Nyx was summoned to this world. During these days, he has been staying near the Matou family residence and has also conducted some research on Fuyuki City through television. Nyx is somewhat worried about the upcoming battle.
For gods, combat is purely instinctive. They lack any real martial arts skills. Therefore, Nyx has absolutely no confidence in fighting those historical heroes. After all, his divine power is currently suppressed to around the level of a demigod, and worse, he doesn't even have a suitable weapon.
Speaking of weapons, this is Nyx's second biggest concern. Most Servants possess their own Noble Phantasms, or at least some kind of finishing move or ultimate technique. Noble Phantasms are manifestations of the legends or historical stories about the Servants. However, Nyx does not possess a physical body residing on the Throne of Heroes, and naturally, he doesn't have a Noble Phantasm manifested for him by the laws of the world.
Lacking both exceptional martial arts skills and her own Noble Phantasm, participating in the Holy Grail War in this state would be tantamount to suicide!
"Can't you think of something?"
Nix asked inwardly.
"This is a troublesome problem, host," the system replied. "Throughout the entire mythology, the system has hardly heard of the Goddess of Night possessing any special divine artifact. Fundamentally, primordial gods of this level don't need external aids in combat; they rely entirely on their divine power. Moreover, in the original mythology, the Goddess of Night almost never participated in battle."
In the era of Greek mythology, primordial gods did appear throughout history, but they never truly participated in combat.
Even Gaia only directly intervened when castrating Uranus; during the later Titan Rebellion, she played a supporting role from behind the scenes.
"So, there's no way to conjure up any divine artifact for me?"
Nix felt that the chances of achieving his goal this time were almost nonexistent. How could he possibly fight like this! No weapons, no skills!
"Oh, System, I remember! Legend has it that the host's son, Hypnos, once hid under the host's veil, and even Zeus couldn't harm him! What do you think of this story, host?" The system was very excited. "Concrete a super defensive Noble Phantasm using this story!"
"Veil..." Nyx was speechless. "I'd rather fail than have such a Noble Phantasm!"
"Alright... let's think about it some more."
For the next while, the system and Nyx meticulously examined various legends about Nyx himself, trying to find a story that could be used as a Noble Phantasm. The Matou family's ancestral home had been bombed several times for testing.
Matou Zouken was extremely dissatisfied; that useless Heroic Spirit hadn't even killed anyone else, and he was almost destroying his own family! However, Matou Kariya didn't say anything, leaving early and returning late every day, supposedly to monitor their greatest enemy—Tohsaka Tokiomi.
Young man, you're clearly monitoring your rival and checking out your crush on the side.
Just as Nix and the System were enthusiastically experimenting with one myth after another, Kariya brought back crucial news.
"You mean, signs of Caster's summoning have been detected?"
Nix asked.
"Yes, the Matou family has some secret magic that can detect Servant summoning." Matou Kariya took off his coat, which Nix casually took and placed on the nearby hanger.
"Caster is the last Servant. His appearance signifies the start of the Holy Grail War." Kariya said seriously, sitting on the sofa. Both he and the boy before him were considered extremely weak in this war, making it incredibly difficult to win the Holy Grail.
However, Nix didn't notice Kariya's worry; his attention was focused on the Crest Worm on his Master's face.
"Master."
Kariya paused, startled. Nix rarely called him that, partly to avoid revealing his identity, and partly out of a slight sense of embarrassment about his 18+ content. Nix usually called him by his name.
"Don't use that kind of magic anymore."
Nix was serious. He could clearly feel the Crest Worms relentlessly draining the life force of the young man before him. The bulging veins on his face and his dull hair indicated that if things continued this way, the young man might not have much time left.
Kariya hadn't expected his Servant to care about him and smiled.
"I know, but even so, I have things I have to do." He seemed unwilling to elaborate on the matter. "Speaking of which, I haven't asked you yet, Nix, why do you want the Holy Grail?"
"Me? Hmm… how should I put it," Nix didn't know how to describe his situation. "I should say, I want to change my destiny!"
Having children must be destiny, Nix thought.
"Is that so…"
It seems his Servant also has a story, Kariya thought, perhaps he too has experienced painful events in the past.
System: Sorry, your brainwaves are completely out of sync…
"Speaking of which, System, is there any way to save Kariya?"
Nix asked inwardly. Kariya had left a good impression on him during their time together these past few days, and he didn't want this young man to die from that kind of magic.
"Life force is also a form of magic power. In his case, too much of his life force was being extracted and used as magic power. All you need to do is replenish his magic power. When the host leaves this world, he should be able to use full divine power for a short time. Divine power is a higher level of power than magic power. Giving him some divine power will solve the problem."
"That's good."
"Nix!"
Kariya suddenly interrupted Nix's conversation with the system. He held a bug he used as a familiar in his hand, his expression grave.
"Just now, Assassin was killed by Tohsaka's Servant!"
