Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Just another day

[Well, that's because your victims are weak. And remember, although the instructor didn't explicitly say it, he did mention that your points depend on the tier of the opponent you defeat.]

"That bastard, so he meant that for students too," I muttered, frowning.

[Plus, those students hadn't scored any points yet, so they had nothing on them worth taking.]

"Haah," I sighed, glancing toward the refrigerator at the far end of the aisle.

The supermarket was enormous, and I still hadn't been able to locate whoever caused that explosion, but something told me it was better not to cross paths with them. I made my way toward the refrigerator anyway, and that's when I noticed someone crouched behind it.

Whoever hid there was an idiot. The safest-looking spots were always the most dangerous ones because they were the first places anyone would check.

Just as I reached for the door:

[Duck.]

I dropped flat to the ground, and an arrow zipped through the air exactly where my head had been a second before. That's when I noticed the bodies scattered across the floor nearby.

I almost walked right into that.

I traced the shot back to its source and spotted a girl with greenish-brown hair and sharp red eyes, already nocking another arrow with her gaze fixed directly on me. I threw myself sideways as the second arrow sliced through the air and buried itself into the shelf behind where I'd been standing.

The refrigerator was bait. She had set up the whole thing and positioned herself in a blind spot that you couldn't pick up on unless you already knew where to look. I had no idea how many people had already fallen for it.

I pushed off the ground and rounded the nearest corner.

Bam.

I collided with someone, and before I could even process what had happened, a blade was already swinging toward my neck.

Kink.

I got the digger up just in time and caught the blade, deflecting it at the last second. The girl on the other end stared at my weapon with obvious confusion, and that split second of hesitation was all I needed. I drove the digger into her neck, and she went down.

I looked away immediately. This world was too realistic for its own good. They could have at least made deaths look like glitching pixels or something, anything that felt less like the real thing, but no. It was like they actually wanted us to get used to this, to get used to killing.

Whoosh.

"AHHHHHH!"

I hit the ground hard, pain shooting through me, and I looked up just in time to see her, the archer, already drawing another arrow.

"WHAT THE HELL?! YOU CHASED ME ALL THE WAY HERE?!" I shouted.

She didn't say anything for a moment, just finished nocking the arrow and took aim.

"Shut up and die."

FUCK.
