Chapter 10 - Chloe?

Aria stood before the massive iron door at the very end of the damp concrete hallway. The stolen keys felt incredibly heavy and cold in her trembling hands. She glanced over her shoulder quickly. The unconscious cartel guard remained completely still on the floor near the wooden crates marked with the Ghost Syndicate insignia.

She shoved the largest key into the rusted lock and turned it forcefully. The heavy deadbolt retracted with a loud, echoing clunk. Aria pushed the door open, wincing as the metal hinges screamed in loud protest.

The cell was suffocatingly dark and smelled entirely of stale water and pure despair. It was an old prohibition era bunker, retrofitted by Hector Vargas into a soundproof torture chamber. A single flickering bulb swung slowly overhead.

"Who is there?" a small, terrified voice whimpered from the far corner. "Please do not hurt me again."

Aria rushed forward, her expensive silk gown dragging across the filthy concrete floor. "Chloe, it is me. It is Aria. I told you I would not leave you behind."

Chloe was curled tightly into a small ball, her wrists and ankles bound securely with thick coarse ropes. Her blonde hair was a matted mess, and her face was stained with dark streaks of dirt and tears.

"Aria?" Chloe sobbed violently, pressing her face against her tied knees. "They told me you were dead. They told me the monster killed you at his estate. Vargas said he was going to skin me alive on the stage tonight to send a message to the other families."

"Vargas is a liar," Aria reassured her, dropping to her knees on the hard floor. She ignored the expensive silk tearing against the rough stone. She began picking frantically at the incredibly tight knots binding Chloe. "Kieran Cross is keeping Vargas distracted upstairs in his private study right now. We only have a few minutes before the cartel guards realize what is happening. We have to move quickly."

"You are working with Cross?" Chloe gasped, her voice trembling with absolute terror. "He is the most dangerous man in the entire Syndicate. He will kill us both."

"He is actually protecting me," Aria corrected softly, finally loosening the first thick rope around her wrists. "I know it sounds completely insane, Chloe. But my father left behind a massive mess. He stole a highly encrypted database containing all the darkest secrets of the five ruling families. Hector Vargas is funding a shadow faction called the Ghost Syndicate to overthrow the entire council. I just saw their weapon crates sitting right outside this door. Kieran is the only person powerful enough to stop them from burning the entire city down."

"Your father stole the vault," Chloe repeated softly, her crying slowing down just a fraction.

"Yes," Aria nodded, pulling the heavy ropes away from Chloe entirely. "And he used my biometric data as the only key. That is why they all want me. But we are not going to let them win. Kieran has an entire extraction team waiting for my signal. I have a military grade panic button right here on this diamond necklace. Once we are safely out of this basement and back in the service corridor, I will press it. His men will breach the mansion and get us out safely."

"Are you absolutely sure we can trust him?" Chloe asked, looking up with wide, tear filled eyes.

"I trust him," Aria stated firmly, surprised by the absolute conviction in her own voice. The terrifying underworld king had protected her at every single turn. "Now give me your hands so I can untie these final knots. We are getting out of this nightmare tonight."

"Vargas brought men wearing white phantom masks down here earlier," Chloe whispered, offering her tied wrists to Aria. "They were speaking Russian. They said the local cartel soldiers were entirely useless. They said they needed a professional extraction team to handle the Cross estate because Kieran has too many elite guards."

"Russian mercenaries," Aria muttered, working her fingers desperately against the stubborn hemp rope. "The Ghost Syndicate operates out of Eastern Europe. If Vargas is importing foreign shadow assassins into our territory, he is planning a massive coup against the elder council. My father must have known about this dark alliance. That is exactly why he built the encrypted vault in the first place. He wanted to expose them all."

"Do you think your father is truly dead?" Chloe asked quietly.

Aria paused for a single fraction of a second. She thought about the glossy photograph hidden safely beneath her mattress back at the Cross fortress. She had not told Kieran about it yet.

"I do not know what to believe anymore," Aria admitted honestly, her fingers bleeding slightly from the rough friction of the ropes. "But if he is alive, he is playing an incredibly dangerous game. He left me completely blind in a city full of wolves. I had to learn how to bite back just to survive the last forty eight hours."

"You are incredibly brave," Chloe said softly.

"I am just surviving," Aria corrected her. "There. The last knot is completely loose."

The heavy ropes fell away, hitting the damp concrete with a soft thud.

Aria let out a deep, shuddering breath. A massive wave of profound relief washed over her entirely. She had done it. She had successfully navigated a cartel stronghold, neutralized an armed guard, and saved an innocent life. She retained her humanity in a world entirely designed to strip it away. Kieran had called her a highly capable operative, and he was entirely right.

"Can you stand up?" Aria asked, offering her hand to the blonde girl. "We need to retrace my exact steps through the blind spots of the security cameras."

Chloe did not take her hand.

In the span of a single heartbeat, the entire atmosphere inside the damp cell shifted violently.

Chloe completely stopped crying. The terrified, innocent trembling vanished entirely from her small frame. Her posture straightened with unnatural, terrifying precision. The wide, fearful expression on her dirt stained face melted away, instantly replaced by an incredibly cold, highly trained smirk.

"What is wrong?" Aria asked, her hand still extended in the air. A sudden, deep chill spiked straight through her chest.

Chloe moved with blinding, impossible speed. It was not the desperate flailing of a civilian. It was the flawless, calculated strike of an elite assassin.

Before Aria could even blink, Chloe swept her arm up, violently slapping Aria's extended hand away. In the exact same fluid motion, Chloe grabbed Aria by the front of her expensive silk gown, pivoted her hips, and threw Aria forcefully over her own shoulder.

Aria slammed incredibly hard onto the solid concrete floor. All the oxygen rushed out of her lungs in a single agonizing burst. Her vision blurred for a crucial second.

She gasped desperately for air, instinctively reaching her hand up toward the heavy diamond choker to press the hidden panic button to summon Kieran.

A heavy combat boot stomped down brutally onto her wrist, pinning her arm to the floor.

Aria blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision. Chloe was standing directly over her, no longer a weeping victim. The blonde girl casually reached behind her own back, entirely bypassing the torn fabric of her filthy dress, and pulled a sleek, suppressed black pistol from a concealed tactical holster strapped tightly to her thigh.

Chloe racked the slide with a sharp metallic click. She dropped smoothly to one knee and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against the center of Aria's forehead.

Aria lay completely paralyzed. The ultimate betrayal shattered her reality into a million jagged pieces. The innocent girl from the auction block was a planted operative the entire time. The Ghost Syndicate crates, the perfectly timed capture, the weeping act. It was all a meticulously designed stage play, and Aria had walked the most powerful king in the underworld right into the absolute center of it.

"You should have left me tied up, little bird," Chloe mocked, her voice completely devoid of the terrified tremor she had used just moments ago. It was smooth, lethal, and dripping with dark amusement.

"Who exactly are you?" Aria choked out, staring directly up the dark barrel of the suppressed weapon.

Chloe leaned in incredibly close, her cold blue eyes locking onto Aria with absolute predatory focus. She lowered her voice to a highly dangerous whisper.

"Your father says hello, Aria," Chloe smiled wickedly. "You performed perfectly tonight. You led Kieran Cross right into our trap."
