Chapter 1 - The Call of the black pound

The Call of the Black Pond đź‘»

On the edge of a small village near the old coal mines of Asansol, there was a pond everyone feared. The villagers called it the Black Pond. Even in daylight, its water looked dark and heavy, as if shadows were dissolved deep within it.

After sunset, no one dared to go near it. Years ago, a young girl had died there under mysterious circumstances. Since then, people claimed they could hear a soft, heartbreaking cry floating across the water at night.

Suman was a Class Ten student known for his bravery. He never believed in ghosts.

One evening, his friend Rahul challenged him.

"If you're really that brave, go to the Black Pond at midnight."

Suman laughed.

"Fine. I'll go tonight."

At exactly midnight, under pale moonlight, Suman walked toward the pond with a torch in his hand. The night was silent except for the faint chirping of crickets.

As he reached the edge of the pond, a sudden cold wind brushed past him. It felt like someone was breathing right behind his neck.

He quickly turned on his torch.

There, by the water, sat a girl in a white sari. Her long hair covered her face.

Suman's heart pounded, but he forced himself to speak.

"Who are you?"

Slowly, the girl lifted her face.

Her eyes were empty—just dark hollows filled with endless blackness. Her lips moved, but no sound came out.

Suddenly, all the night sounds stopped. The crickets fell silent. The wind froze. The world felt lifeless.

The girl slowly stood up.

Her feet were not touching the ground. She was floating.

Suman stepped back in terror. Then he heard a faint sobbing voice—

"Save me…"

The sound seemed to rise from beneath the water.
