Chapter 2 - The Man Outside the Glass Door

The ICU corridor felt different from the rest of the hospital.

Quieter.

More controlled.

Even the footsteps here sounded softer, as if people instinctively understood that life balanced on thin threads behind those doors.

Shivanya removed her gloves and dropped them into the disposal bin before stepping out of the room.

A nurse approached quickly.

"Doctor, the family has arrived."

She nodded.

"Vitals?"

"Stable for now. Blood pressure responding."

"Good."

The nurse hesitated slightly.

"They seem… important."

Shivanya gave a small, calm smile.

"They all are."

The nurse relaxed a little.

Shivanya began walking down the corridor toward the family waiting area when the elevator doors opened at the far end.

Several people stepped out at once.

Two security personnel.

A middle-aged man speaking urgently on the phone.

And behind them—

A tall man in a charcoal suit.

He didn't rush.

He didn't need to.

The moment he entered the corridor, the atmosphere shifted subtly.

Staff straightened.

Conversations lowered.

Shivanya slowed without meaning to.

The man walked forward with measured steps, his gaze fixed on the ICU doors.

There was no panic on his face.

Only focus.

A nurse beside Shivanya whispered quietly,

"That's Rudraksh Kapoor."

The name was familiar.

Anyone who followed city news would know it.

Kapoor Infrastructure.

Urban projects.

One of the youngest industrial heads in North India.

But the recognition passed through Shivanya's mind without much effect.

To her, he was simply—

Family of the patient.

He stopped near the ICU entrance.

"Condition?" he asked the nurse.

His voice was low but firm.

"Stable at the moment, sir. The attending doctor is handling it."

His eyes moved across the corridor and stopped on Shivanya.

The nurse turned slightly.

"This is Dr. Shivanya."

For a brief second, neither of them spoke.

Up close, he looked even taller than she expected.

Sharp features.

Dark eyes that studied people too carefully.

The kind of gaze that didn't miss details.

Shivanya broke the silence first.

"You're the patient's grandson?"

"Yes."

"She experienced a cardiac episode," Shivanya said calmly. "We stabilized her for now."

"For now?" he asked.

"Yes."

He seemed to appreciate the honesty.

"What are the risks?"

"Age complicates recovery," she replied. "But she responded well to treatment."

His shoulders eased slightly.

"Can I see her?"

"For a minute."

She stepped aside and opened the ICU door.

"Only one person."

He entered quietly.

Through the glass panel, Shivanya watched him approach the bed.

The older woman looked smaller beneath the hospital sheets, oxygen line resting gently near her face.

He stood beside her without speaking.

Just watching.

There was something about the way he stood there.

Not dramatic.

Not emotional.

Just… present.

After a minute, he stepped out again.

"Thank you," he said.

She nodded.

"We'll monitor her through the night."

There was a short pause.

At that moment, a monitor inside the ICU beeped sharply.

Shivanya turned immediately.

"Excuse me."

She stepped back inside the room, already focusing on the screens.

The pulse had fluctuated again.

"Adjust oxygen flow," she instructed.

The nurse complied.

Within seconds, the readings stabilized again.

When Shivanya walked back out, Rudraksh was still there.

Watching.

She gestured toward the waiting area.

He glanced at it briefly.

Then back at her.

"I'll take my chances."

She studied him for a moment before nodding once.

"Then try not to scare my nurses."

He almost laughed.

And Shivanya walked away toward the nurse's station, unaware that Rudraksh was still watching her.

Not because she was beautiful.

Though she was.

But because something about her felt—

Unfamiliar.

Different.

In a city full of people trying to impress him, she was the first person who seemed completely uninterested.

And that alone made her impossible to ignore.
