Chapter 54 - CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE: The Reef

The reef saved them.

The humans couldn't follow—their ships were too big, their aircraft too clumsy in the tight spaces. They circled the edges, firing blindly, but the Metkayina knew every tunnel, every cave, every hiding place. They slipped away into the darkness, carrying their wounded, mourning their dead.

Kaelen sat in a cave, staring at nothing.

Ash was gone. His soul-sibling. His partner. His friend. The creature who had chosen him, bonded with him, saved his life a hundred times. Gone.

Seri sat beside him, not touching, just present. She had learned, over the years, when to speak and when to be silent.

"She was there," he said finally. "At the beginning. When I first came to Verath. She chose me when no one else would." His voice cracked. "She was the first one who saw me. Really saw me."

"She saw you," Seri agreed. "And you saw her. That bond doesn't break. Not really. She's in Eyva now. In the forest. In the ocean. In the sky. She's everywhere."

"That's not enough."

"No. It's not." She took his hand. "But it's something."

They sat in silence as the battle raged above them, as the humans searched and failed, as the survivors huddled in the darkness and prayed for dawn.
