Chapter 1 - Moving In, Messing Up

Graduation day had come and gone, and the excitement everyone else seemed to feel had somehow passed me by. The ceremony had been beautiful. Caps flew through the air, parents cheered, and smiles stretched across every face. Liam had been by my side the whole time, holding my hand, whispering that I was going to do amazing things. He had always been thoughtful, the kind of boyfriend who noticed the smallest details my favorite chocolate, the way I liked my coffee, the way I laughed at the silliest jokes. He was patient, kind, devoted in a way that made it impossible not to love him. And I did, more than I had ever thought possible.

Yet, as I packed the last of my things for college, a heaviness settled in my chest. Leaving Liam was hard, but leaving my family, my home, and my little niece, Emily, was even harder. I had imagined I was ready for this independence, for the thrill of a fresh start, but hugging Emily that morning had undone me. Her tiny arms had wrapped around my neck as she whispered, "Don't forget me, Auntie," and suddenly the thought of being away from her felt unbearable. My parents fussed over me, reminding me to eat, to drink water, to call, but no amount of reminders could fill the ache that had taken residence in my heart.

As I loaded the last box into the trunk, my phone buzzed. Liam. Hey… can't wait to see you tonight. I stared at the screen, thumb hovering. I wanted to respond immediately, to tell him I loved him, to promise that distance wouldn't matter. But a small voice inside told me to pause. I needed a little space, just enough to start this new chapter on my own. Gently, I set the phone aside.

The drive to campus was quiet. My mother's gentle reminders floated in from the passenger seat, but mostly I stared out the window, watching the familiar streets disappear. When I finally arrived, the dorm building towered above me, its fresh paint gleaming in the afternoon sun. The smell of disinfectant mingled with the faint scent of new furniture and excitement. Students were everywhere, hauling boxes, setting up beds, introducing themselves. The chaos was overwhelming, but beneath it, I felt a pulse of possibility. My heart thudded in anticipation.

"Are you Maya?" a voice asked, smooth and confident.

I looked up and saw a boy leaning casually against the doorway of the room next to mine. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his smile reached all the way to his eyes, crinkling the corners just so. There was a presence about him that made it impossible not to notice.

"Yes… that's me," I said, adjusting my backpack strap.

"I'm Ryan," he said, stepping forward. "Mia's brother. She told me you'd be moving in today. Need a hand with those boxes?"

I blinked, caught off guard by how effortlessly charming he was. "Uh… yes, thank you."

As we lifted boxes together, I found myself stealing glances at him. There was something magnetic about the way he laughed, joked, and moved. My chest fluttered in a way I didn't expect, a mixture of excitement and nervousness. My thoughts drifted to Liam. I loved him, I truly did, but this unexpected encounter made me realize that leaving high school and him completely behind might be more complicated than I had imagined.

My phone buzzed again. Liam. Are you there? My heart tightened. I wanted to answer, to reassure him, but I didn't. I was giving him space, as difficult as it was. I wanted him to feel loved, to feel missed, but I also needed to learn who I was outside of our relationship. College was a chance to discover myself, not just continue the life I had always known.

Ryan noticed my distracted expression and raised an eyebrow. "Everything okay?" he asked casually.

I forced a smile. "Yes… just thinking about home."

He nodded. There was something comforting in his understanding. He didn't press, didn't judge. He just accepted it, and that small gesture left an impression.

By the time I had unpacked the last of my things, my dorm room felt like a home in miniature. Emily's photos were taped to the wall, bringing warmth to the otherwise sterile space. My suitcase held little keepsakes, reminders of home and the life I was leaving behind. And yet, despite all this, the space in my heart reserved for Liam felt incomplete. I missed his voice, his laugh, the way his hand would find mine when I was nervous. I missed my family, my niece, and the sense of belonging that came with them.

I sank onto my bed, letting the quiet of the room wash over me. I had dreamed of independence, of starting over, but I hadn't anticipated the weight of leaving everything familiar behind.

A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. My eyes widened when I saw Ryan standing there, holding a small box of snacks with a casual grin. "Thought you might need a little fuel after moving in," he said.

I laughed softly. "You really are everywhere today, aren't you?"

He shrugged. "Just making sure my sister's new roommate survives her first day."

I felt my cheeks flush. There was something about him, the effortless charm, the way he noticed things without even trying, that made my heart race. For the first time since arriving, I felt a spark of excitement about this new life.

I picked up my phone one last time, seeing Liam's messages stacking up, gentle reminders that he was thinking of me. I loved him with all my heart, but something had shifted. There was a pull toward this unexpected presence, toward the thrill of something new, something different, something that made my chest flutter in ways I hadn't felt before.

Ryan gave me one last smile before stepping back, leaving the door slightly ajar. My eyes lingered on him as he walked away. My thoughts were a tangled mess of guilt, curiosity, and anticipation. College was supposed to be a fresh start, a new semester, a new me. But standing there in my small dorm room, I realized it was going to be so much more than that. It was going to change everything.
