Chapter 1 - the promise in the rain

Love Story — "The Promise in the Rain"

In a small neighborhood of Durgapur called Subarnapur, life moved gently with the seasons. Soft sunlight of spring, white clouds floating lazily, and the distant hum of factories created a unique atmosphere. In this very place lived two childhood friends—Arnav and Meghla—neighbors, classmates, and unknowingly, the most important people in each other's lives.

Arnav came from a simple family. His father worked in a factory, and his mother was a homemaker. He was a hardworking student with a big dream—to become an engineer one day. Meghla, on the other hand, was as soft and calm as her name suggested. Her smile was warm and soothing, like a quiet stream flowing through a forest. They went to school together, studied together, and every evening they sat in the open field of their neighborhood, sharing stories and laughter.

One afternoon, on their way home from school, it suddenly began to rain. Neither of them had an umbrella, so they ran and stood under a big mango tree. The sound of raindrops, the smell of wet soil, and the silence between them created a magical moment.

Meghla smiled and said, "You know, I really love the rain."

Arnav replied, "I do too… but today's rain feels different."

"Why?" she asked.

He looked at her shyly and said, "Because today, I'm getting drenched with you."

Meghla didn't say anything, but her soft smile said everything. In that moment, Arnav realized that their friendship had quietly begun to turn into something deeper.

Days passed, and soon their school exams were over. Arnav achieved excellent results and got the chance to study in a well-known college in Kolkata. But that meant he had to leave Durgapur. Everyone was proud of him, but Meghla's heart felt heavy.

On the last evening before his departure, they sat together in their favorite field.

Meghla softly asked, "When you leave, will everything change?"

Arnav answered, "Everything may change… but one thing never will."

"What is that?" she asked.

He looked into her eyes and said, "The place you have in my heart."

Tears filled Meghla's eyes, but she nodded with a faint smile.

Life in Kolkata became busy for Arnav—new city, new friends, new responsibilities. Yet, every night when he was alone, he remembered the quiet field, the rainy afternoon, and Meghla's smile.

Back in Durgapur, Meghla continued her studies, but a silent emptiness stayed in her heart. Every evening she still visited the field where they once sat together—now she sat there alone, holding onto their memories.

They spoke on the phone, sent messages, and tried to stay connected. But slowly, distance began to grow—not in their hearts, but in their daily lives.

After a year, during the Durga Puja holidays, Arnav returned home. Everything looked the same, yet something felt different. That evening he went to the field and saw Meghla sitting there alone, just like before.

He walked up to her and said, "You still come here?"

She smiled gently and replied, "Someone used to sit here with me… it became a habit."

Arnav felt a wave of emotion. After a long silence, he finally spoke.

"Meghla, I want to tell you something."

"Tell me," she said quietly.

Taking a deep breath, he said, "I can't think of you as just a friend anymore. You are a very special part of my life… I love you."

Tears filled Meghla's eyes as she replied, "I knew you would say this one day… because I've loved you for a long time too."

They both smiled, and in that moment, all distance and silence disappeared.

But life had more challenges waiting.

Soon, Meghla's family began to talk about her marriage. They wanted her to settle down soon. Meghla felt torn—she loved Arnav, but she knew he was still building his future.

One day she told Arnav everything.

He stayed quiet for a moment and then said, "I cannot marry you right now. But I promise you—I will stand on my own feet, and then I will come back for you. Will you wait for me?"

Without hesitation, Meghla answered, "I've already been waiting all this time. I can wait a little longer."

Thus began a new chapter of their love—one of patience, trust, and promises.

Arnav completed his studies and got a good job. Years passed, filled with struggles, distance, and small misunderstandings. But they never let go of each other.

Finally, the day came when Arnav, along with his family, went to Meghla's house to ask for her hand in marriage. Both families met, talked warmly, and accepted their love.

On their wedding day, it rained again—just like that special day years ago.

Meghla smiled and said, "Look… it rains on every important day of our lives."

Arnav replied, "Because the rain is a witness to our love."
