Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 — The Divided World

The world didn't collapse.

It split.

Not physically.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough that people began to notice the difference.

There were now two kinds of people.

Those who had seen.

And those who hadn't.

The ones who hadn't—

Still lived normally.

They laughed.

Worked.

Slept.

Unaware.

The ones who had—

Couldn't go back.

They saw the cracks.

Heard the whispers.

Felt the shifts.

And worst of all—

They noticed the others.

"…You're not the same," a girl whispered to her friend.

Her friend smiled.

Too perfectly.

"…What do you mean?"

The girl stepped back.

"…You blinked wrong."

Silence.

The friend tilted her head.

Slowly.

"…You noticed."

Across the city—

Panic began to spread.

Videos flooded the internet.

Clips of reflections moving.

Voices calling names.

People acting… wrong.

Some called it mass hysteria.

Others called it a glitch.

But the ones who had seen—

Knew.

It wasn't spreading randomly.

It was selecting.

Meera stood inside an abandoned building.

Around her—

Others.

Five people.

All different.

All scared.

All awake.

"…So we're just supposed to hide?" one of them said.

A tall guy.

Nervous.

Angry.

"They're everywhere!"

"They're not everywhere," Meera said calmly.

"They're where people look."

Silence.

"…What does that mean?" a girl asked quietly.

Meera looked at them.

"…They need attention."

A pause.

"…Recognition."

"…Memory."

The group exchanged uneasy glances.

"…So if we ignore them…" someone said,

"…they go away?"

Meera shook her head.

"…No."

"…They just find someone else."

Silence fell again.

Heavier this time.

"…Then what's the point?" the tall guy snapped.

"…We're already marked, right?"

Meera didn't answer.

Because—

He was right.

Elsewhere—

The boy walked through the street.

People moved around him.

But now—

Some of them looked at him.

Really looked.

And froze.

"…You…" one man whispered.

The boy stopped.

Slowly turned.

His eyes—

Calm.

Deep.

"…You can see me," he said softly.

The man staggered back.

"…What are you?"

A pause.

Then—

The boy smiled.

Not wide.

Not creepy.

Just… knowing.

"…That depends," he said.

"…What do you remember?"

The man's face twisted.

"…I don't—"

A flash.

A hallway.

A voice.

A rule.

"…Don't look behind—"

He stopped.

Too late.

The boy stepped closer.

"…See?" he whispered.

"…You already know."

The man's reflection appeared beside him—

In nothing.

Just air.

And smiled.

Back at the hideout—

Meera stood still.

Something felt wrong.

Different.

"…He's here," she whispered.

The others looked at her.

"…Who?"

Meera didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

A presence filled the room.

Not entering.

Not appearing.

Just… existing.

"…You gathered them," a voice said calmly.

Everyone froze.

The air behind Meera shifted.

She turned slowly.

And saw him.

Aarav.

Not fully human.

Not fully gone.

Standing there.

Watching.

"…You shouldn't be here," Meera said quietly.

He tilted his head slightly.

"…Why?"

"…Because they'll notice you," she said.

A pause.

"…That's the point," Aarav replied.

The group stepped back.

Fear spreading instantly.

"…What is that?" someone whispered.

Aarav looked at them.

Each one.

Carefully.

"…They're early," he said.

"…But not ready."

Meera stepped forward.

"…Leave them out of this."

Aarav's gaze returned to her.

"…You said you wanted to stop it."

Silence.

"…I still do."

"…Then don't protect them," he said.

"…Teach them."

Meera's expression hardened.

"…Teach them what?"

Aarav's eyes darkened slightly.

"…How not to become me."

Silence.

The group looked between them.

Confused.

Terrified.

"…You are him?" the tall guy asked.

Aarav smiled faintly.

"…I was."

A pause.

"…Now I'm what's left."

The room felt colder.

Heavier.

"…So what do we do?" the girl asked quietly.

Aarav looked at her.

Long.

Carefully.

Then—

He spoke.

"…You stop thinking this is about survival."

A pause.

"…It's about identity."

Silence.

"…If you forget who you are…"

His voice dropped.

"…they won't have to replace you."

The air went still.

Because that—

Was worse.
