Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: The Truth Hidden in Silence

The rain started just after midnight.

It wasn't the violent kind that shook windows or filled the streets within minutes.

It was gentle.

Steady.

Almost peaceful.

From the floor-to-ceiling window of the library, Xiaoyu watched countless drops slide across the glass, merging into silver lines before disappearing into darkness.

She had always liked the rain.

It drowned unnecessary thoughts.

Tonight, however, it couldn't silence her mind.

The old wooden table before her was covered with photographs.

Some had faded around the edges.

Some still carried fingerprints from years ago.

One showed a little girl sitting beneath a cherry tree, laughing with her eyes closed.

Another showed the same little girl holding a tiny violin that looked too big for her hands.

And beside her...

A teenage boy.

Expressionless.

Serious.

Standing close enough that their shoulders almost touched.

Lu Shen.

She had stared at that photograph for nearly an hour.

Every time she looked at it, another fragment surfaced.

A laugh.

A melody.

The smell of spring flowers.

A hand gently fixing a ribbon in her hair.

Nothing complete.

Only broken pieces.

She reached for the silver hairpin resting beside the photographs.

The blue stone reflected the warm light of the library.

Her fingertips trembled.

"...Who were we?"

No one answered.

Only the rain.

A quiet knock echoed through the room.

Madam Chen entered carrying a tray.

Fresh tea.

Warm milk.

And a small plate of almond cookies.

Exactly the things Xiaoyu unconsciously reached for whenever she couldn't sleep.

"You should rest."

"I'm not tired."

Madam Chen smiled.

"You've been saying that every night."

She placed the tray on the table before noticing the photographs.

Her gentle smile slowly disappeared.

"You found them again."

"I never really put them away."

Silence settled between them.

After a long moment, Xiaoyu finally spoke.

"Did you know me before the accident?"

Madam Chen didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she carefully folded the corner of a cloth napkin.

"When I first met you..."

"...you couldn't stop talking."

Xiaoyu looked up.

"You loved asking questions."

"You make it sound annoying."

Madam Chen laughed softly.

"It was impossible to stay angry with you."

Another silence followed.

Then Xiaoyu whispered,

"Am I still the same person?"

The older woman looked at her for a long time.

"No."

The answer was honest.

"But neither is Mr. Lu."

At exactly one-thirty in the morning...

the top floor of Shen Group remained illuminated.

Every other office was dark.

Only one room still held light.

Stacks of documents covered Lu Shen's desk.

Hospital records.

Financial statements.

Insurance reports.

Security logs.

His assistant entered quietly.

"I brought everything we recovered."

Lu Shen didn't look up.

"What about the surgeon?"

"He disappeared two days after the operation."

"The nurses?"

"Three resigned within the same month."

"The hospital director?"

"Retired overseas."

Silence.

The assistant placed one final folder on the desk.

"This was hidden inside the archive."

Lu Shen opened it.

A single photograph.

Nothing more.

A hospital room fifteen years ago.

Machines surrounded a woman lying unconscious.

Beside her bed slept a little girl.

Curled against the blanket.

Completely exhausted.

Standing beside her...

was a teenage Lu Shen.

One hand rested carefully on the little girl's shoulder.

Protective.

Gentle.

Almost afraid she would disappear.

Lu Shen stared at the photograph.

For the first time in years...

he remembered that night.

"You promised."

An elderly doctor stood beside him.

Rain struck the hospital windows.

The young Lu Shen never looked away from the sleeping child.

"I know."

"If she remembers too soon..."

"I know."

"If they find her..."

"They won't."

The doctor sighed.

"You sound very certain."

"I'm not."

The answer came quietly.

"But I'll protect her anyway."

The memory faded.

Lu Shen closed the folder.

His assistant remained silent.

Finally he asked,

"Should I destroy the copies?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Lu Shen looked toward the city lights.

"They've started moving."

"You mean them?"

"Yes."

"And Mrs. Lu?"

His voice became almost inaudible.

"She'll remember everything."

The following afternoon...

Xiaoyu left the mansion despite increased security.

She needed air.

Needed somewhere that didn't remind her of unanswered questions.

The old park welcomed her with quiet paths and empty benches.

The violinist was already there.

Playing the same melody.

When he noticed her, he smiled.

"I wondered when you'd return."

"I need answers."

"So did the little girl."

She sat beside him.

The melody stopped.

He carefully placed the violin inside its case.

"You came here every Sunday."

"I still don't remember."

"You would sit beside that tree."

He pointed toward the lake.

"And wait."

"For whom?"

The old man's eyes softened.

"For the serious boy who always arrived exactly five minutes late."

Xiaoyu felt her heartbeat quicken.

"He never smiled."

"But he always carried sweets in his pocket."

A faint image flashed.

A young boy awkwardly handing her candy.

Pretending he didn't care whether she accepted it.

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

The memory vanished.

At the Lu residence...

Security cameras rotated toward the front gate.

A black SUV stopped outside.

Two men stepped out.

Expensive suits.

No expressions.

One approached the guard.

"I have something for Mr. Lu."

An envelope changed hands.

Nothing else.

The SUV drove away.

Inside the envelope...

was a freshly printed photograph.

Xiaoyu sitting beside the violinist.

Taken less than thirty minutes earlier.

On the back, typed in perfect black letters:

Memory recovery exceeds projected timeline.

Beneath the sentence...

a silver circular symbol.

Lu Shen recognized it instantly.

His hand tightened.

His assistant noticed.

"Sir?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he quietly folded the photograph.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of planning.

Fifteen years of silence.

And now...

everything was beginning to collapse.

That evening...

The rain finally stopped.

The gardens smelled of wet earth and cherry blossoms.

Xiaoyu walked slowly beneath the oldest tree on the property.

It was quiet enough to hear the leaves moving.

She wasn't surprised to find Lu Shen standing there.

Hands in his pockets.

Looking toward the sky.

Neither spoke.

Not immediately.

Eventually she stepped beside him.

"I went to the park."

"I know."

"I met the violinist."

"I know."

She laughed quietly.

"You always know."

He didn't deny it.

She looked straight ahead.

"I'm tired."

"I know."

"I'm tired of everyone protecting me."

Silence.

"I'm tired of everyone deciding what I should remember."

More silence.

Finally...

she turned toward him.

"When my family died..."

"...where were you?"

For the first time since their marriage...

Lu Shen didn't answer immediately.

His calm expression cracked.

Almost imperceptibly.

His hand slowly reached into his coat pocket.

He removed the silver hairpin.

The same one he had kept for fifteen years.

The same one he had returned to her.

His voice was barely louder than the wind.

"I was there."

Xiaoyu stopped breathing.

"I saw the fire."

Another sentence.

"I heard you crying."

And then—

"I was the one who carried you out."

The world seemed to stop.

The rain-soaked garden disappeared.

A little girl crying in smoke.

Strong arms lifting her.

Someone whispering,

"Don't be afraid. I'm here."

A memory.

Not a fragment.

A complete memory.

Xiaoyu staggered backward.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

Far beyond the mansion gates...

hidden behind a parked car...

a camera shutter clicked once.

A man lowered the lens and smiled.

He picked up his phone.

"The memories have returned."

A distorted voice answered only four words.

"Begin the final phase."

The call ended.

And for the first time since signing the contract,

neither Xiaoyu nor Lu Shen realized that the greatest danger was no longer hidden in the past.
