Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The First Appearance

The invitation arrived just after sunrise.

It rested neatly beside Xiaoyu's teacup, its cream-colored envelope sealed with dark blue wax.

Nothing about it was extravagant.

Nothing about it needed to be.

Power rarely announced itself loudly.

She stared at it for several seconds before breaking the seal.

Inside was a single card.

Han Foundation Annual Charity Gala

Mr. Lu Shen & Mrs. Xiaoyu Lu

The letters seemed strangely distant.

Mrs. Xiaoyu Lu.

Five days ago, she had been Xiaoyu.

Now an entire city had decided who she belonged to.

"You'll be attending with me."

Lu Shen's voice interrupted her thoughts.

He sat across the table in a charcoal suit, reading through a stack of financial reports while calmly drinking black coffee.

It was seven in the morning.

He already looked prepared to conquer the world.

Xiaoyu folded the invitation.

"I assumed."

"It begins at seven."

"So I'll spend an evening smiling at people who secretly dislike each other."

"They won't smile because they like you."

"They'll smile because of you."

"Correct."

She sighed.

"I appreciate your honesty."

"I wasn't trying to be comforting."

"I noticed."

Madam Chen quietly entered with fresh flowers and replaced the arrangement in the center of the table.

She glanced at the invitation and smiled.

"It will be your first public appearance together."

Xiaoyu looked at her.

"Does everyone think this marriage is real?"

Madam Chen adjusted a single white lily.

"They think whatever Mr. Lu allows them to think."

---

By noon, the mansion had transformed.

Stylists arrived carrying garment bags.

Hair specialists unpacked expensive equipment.

Jewelry cases covered the dressing room table.

Xiaoyu stood perfectly still while strangers discussed her appearance as though she wasn't present.

"The blue dress."

"No, the darker one."

"Pearls."

"Minimal makeup."

Madam Chen listened quietly before making the final decision.

"The midnight-blue gown."

No one argued.

Half an hour later, Xiaoyu stood before the mirror.

The silk dress followed every movement naturally.

Elegant.

Simple.

Confident.

Nothing unnecessary.

She barely recognized the woman looking back at her.

A knock echoed through the room.

Lu Shen entered.

The conversations immediately stopped.

His gaze settled on Xiaoyu.

Not hurried.

Not careless.

Several silent seconds passed.

One stylist finally smiled.

"Mr. Lu, what do you think?"

He answered without hesitation.

"It suits her."

The stylist laughed.

"Only that?"

Lu Shen looked genuinely confused.

"What else should I say?"

Even Madam Chen struggled to hide her smile.

Xiaoyu lowered her eyes before anyone noticed the warmth spreading across her face.

---

The drive into the city was quiet.

Rain clouds gathered above glass skyscrapers while evening traffic slowly filled every road.

Inside the car, Xiaoyu watched familiar streets disappear behind tinted windows.

"This is the first time we've left the mansion together."

Lu Shen continued reading his tablet.

"Yes."

"People will make assumptions."

"They already have."

"And you're comfortable with that?"

"I don't waste energy correcting strangers."

She rested her head lightly against the window.

"I think that might be the saddest thing you've ever said."

For the first time since entering the car, Lu Shen looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because it sounds like someone who stopped expecting to be understood."

Neither spoke again.

The silence between them felt different now.

Less like distance.

More like something waiting to become words.

---

The Grand Imperial Hotel glowed beneath thousands of lights.

Luxury cars lined the entrance.

Television cameras turned the moment the black sedan stopped.

Flashes exploded across the red carpet.

Reporters immediately surrounded the entrance.

"Mr. Lu!"

"This way!"

"Look over here!"

"The newlyweds are here!"

The driver opened the door.

Lu Shen stepped onto the carpet first.

Perfect posture.

Calm expression.

Every movement controlled.

Then he turned.

Without speaking, he extended his hand toward Xiaoyu.

For one brief moment she hesitated.

Taking his hand meant accepting her role.

Refusing meant creating tomorrow's headlines.

Slowly, she placed her hand in his.

His grip was steady.

Neither tight nor possessive.

Simply present.

They walked forward together.

Whispers followed them.

"So that's Mrs. Lu."

"She's beautiful."

"I heard she came from the Xia family."

"A contract marriage, wasn't it?"

"They actually look good together."

Xiaoyu kept her expression calm even as dozens of cameras followed every step.

She finally understood what Lu Shen experienced every day.

Every movement became a story.

Every glance became speculation.

Every silence became gossip.

Inside the ballroom, crystal chandeliers reflected warm golden light across polished marble floors.

Business leaders.

Actors.

Politicians.

International investors.

Every influential figure in the city seemed to be present.

Music floated softly through the room.

Champagne glasses caught the light.

Conversations stopped as Lu Shen entered.

Respect followed him.

Fear followed him.

Attention followed him.

And standing beside him—

so did Xiaoyu.

A woman in an elegant white gown slowly approached through the crowd.

Confident.

Graceful.

Familiar.

She stopped directly before Lu Shen.

A gentle smile appeared on her lips.

"Shen."

Her voice carried effortless intimacy.

"You didn't tell me you got married."

Only then did her eyes shift toward Xiaoyu.

She studied her for a long moment before extending her hand.

"So..."

"I'm Lin Mei."

"I've heard a lot about you."

Xiaoyu accepted the handshake.

A polite smile appeared on her face.

"Really?"

Lin Mei's own smile widened.

"Not nearly enough."

Between them, Lu Shen remained completely silent.

But for the first time since meeting him,

Xiaoyu noticed something unusual.

His fingers, resting casually beside him,

had curled ever so slightly into a fist.

And somehow,

that tiny movement told her more than any words ever could.
