Chapter 5 - A Walk Outside

Time passed as Evan checked the information about the clone and its awakening. Before he knew it, what seemed like half an hour had already passed inside his soul space.

In the end, after going through everything there was to see and learn about his clone, his consciousness left the Soul Space.

'Now, what should I do?' he thought while looking toward the window, where the starry sky of the night could be seen.

He had slept for all this time, and now that he was awake he wasn't sleepy anymore.

"Hmm, well since at this hour a good part of everyone in the manor is resting, I might as well try that now," he murmured while thinking about it for a bit before making a decision.

As things stood, his plan to escape this place wouldn't go anywhere if he remained weak, so he had to deal with that first.

With his clone, that would be possible. But first he had to do the most important thing, get it out of the city.

He didn't summon the clone directly there. Instead, he got down from the bed, albeit with difficulty, and left the storage room.

The manor was dark, and aside from some areas slightly illuminated by lamps based on mana stones, to move around the rest of the manor you had to carry a candle or another light source with you.

Evan normally would have needed a candle. But strangely, as soon as he opened the door, the dark corridor in front of him didn't seem that dark. He could see more or less well in the surrounding space.

That surprised him for a moment and he wondered if it had something to do with his awakening.

After all, it was known that after awakening the body changed and evolved. For some the changes were more evident, while for others they were so subtle they could be ignored.

'Well, that's a nice surprise,' he thought as he stepped out.

He walked for a few seconds until he reached another door.

Once there, without hesitation he opened it and entered.

This was the servants' bathroom reserved for males.

The bathroom itself was very primitive compared to the modern ones of his era,

but hey, when nature calls, even a hole in the ground will do.

That said, he had come here because the bathroom windows were on the side closest to the city walls.

Lirath was under the jurisdiction of the Langthon barony, a small barony like many others whose authority was limited to the city itself.

Normally it wouldn't be limited to that and would extend a bit beyond, but in the current world beyond the city there was only danger. So much so that even a small city like this had walls that fortified it.

Such walls weren't meant to protect from enemies of other kingdoms, nor so much from monsters, but rather from the surrounding environment.

This was the southernmost area of human territory, near the border that separated human territory from the Fallen Lands.

These lands, as the name suggests, were lost lands, more precisely, lands lost to monsters.

The possibility that someone could live in these lands was almost zero for a normal person, and that not only because of all the dangers that lived there, but because of the environment itself.

Among the many threats of these lands, the climate was one of the most lethal.

There, in fact, as far as was known, not even a single ray of sunlight ever fell, because the entire sky of those lands was covered by a curtain of clouds black as pitch.

If that wasn't enough, from them fell flakes of ash which at first glance looked like snow. But anyone who had even only touched it knew that it wasn't.

It wasn't known exactly what it was, but it was known that touching it meant death.

Everyone who touched it would fall ill within 24 hours, and after a few more days they would all die.

For the awakened the situation was slightly better, but even they weren't completely safe from the ash falling from above.

The south side of the city was the one closest to the border and because of that, part of this strange climate influenced it.

And this was where the city walls came into play. They not only protected from possible attacks by beasts, but also formed a strange invisible protection that shielded the people from the effects of this climate.

The Gray Stone Forest was located in the lands north of the city, and although it too was vast and dangerous, compared to the southern border it was at least manageable to a certain extent.

Therefore Percival had no problem going there to hunt, even if only in the peripheral areas.

And that was where Evan was aiming.

Evan was standing near the bathroom window, barred but open.

It overlooked directly onto the northern walls of the city.

Seeing that no one was in the bathroom, and that no patrol was passing along the walls at that moment, he summoned his clone. Immediately the shadow under his feet twisted and the shadow clone appeared.

Evan, seeing his clone's beautiful face in the dark, almost got scared.

'Fck, this guy is creepy as hell'

'wait... I am this guy.'

Evan shook his head, trying to ignore that thought, and looked at the clone.

He had tried to talk to the clone earlier in the Soul Space, but it just watched him in silence.

The system told him that the clone could only execute orders, and its level of intelligence was too low to do anything else.

Only by becoming stronger would it grow in that aspect, something that worried Evan at first.

"Well, only by trying can I get a clear idea of how to use it" he said to himself while giving a mental command to the clone.

It, seeming to understand, twisted and immediately transformed into a shadow. It passed from the floor to the wall and reached the window, where it slipped without any resistance between the iron bars.

Seeing that, Evan let out a sigh of relief.

"Good, at least that's done. Now let's see about getting it out of the city," he said, and without wasting time he returned to his room, always paying attention to see if someone else was awake or not.

Once inside, he got into bed and closed his eyes.

His vision went dark, but not for long. It came back quickly, and this time, instead of the closet, he was looking out over the city walls.
