Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Enlightenment

Leo could consider this his last moments. He wanted to think of nothing, so he made his mind blank.

Leo didn't die, but he was unconscious. His consciousness shift to another place. He found himself in a white place, just as Edrit did before dying. The same god-like being approached Leo.

"You are here!" the being said, as though they had always been certain of his arrival.

"wh-who are you? Are you god?" Leo believed he had died already.

"I'm not god. You are not here because you died."

"Wha.. What do you mean?" Leo was confused. Any of that was expected by him.

"You aren't dead. You are here because of something else."

"What is it?" Leo said.

"I have chosen you to acquire something, something special, and you shall decide to accept or decline my offer." The being looked as if it knew what Leo's decision was going to be.

"Something special? What are you talking about?" Leo's confusion continued.

"You see, I have a friend, someone who died not long ago, but he left something before he died. That something is the knowledge he once had. I offered to give his knowledge to someone else."

"Why would I want his knowledge?"

It became obvious that the special thing was Edrit's knowledge.

"Well, he said that he wanted someone to continue his investigation, someone to continue his legacy."

"His investigation, his legacy?" Leo was confused once again.

"Yes. He invested most of his life investigating an ability. He believed that the potential of that ability wasn't discovered. In the end he himself couldn't discover that either, that's why he gave away this knowledge."

"I still don't know why I would want it" Leo had only wanted to die in peace.

The being convinced Leo on how he was going to be helped by their offer. After Leo's confusion faded, he accepted, thinking that if the knowledge didn't help he would just have another opportunity to die anyways.

The being gave farewells, in the same way they did when Edrit's death occurred. Leo felt as if he was banishing.

Leo's consciousness returned. The place was the same, a canyon within the dungeon. His body felt recuperated. As his consciousness cleared, he woke up. Looking at the place where he almost died, he saw his blood.

The blood felt strange. Not only because of the large amount, but because it formed as a drawing of a ritual.

"It must have been that being" Leo blamed to then continue by ignoring it.

In a corner within the canyon, Leo seated.

Moments later, he felt it. A sensation of anemoia, memories that he never lived came up to his brain. It wasn't the memories of a whole other life, it was a fragment; It gave him an idea of Edrit's life.

Without letting out the most important part of Edrit's gift, Leo gained some knowledge on runic creation. Maybe luck was involved in the selection of which fragment he gained, since he gained essential knowledge for the very start of runic creation.

"So, this is his legacy?" Leo said, with a hint of diminishment over the gift he received.

Even if his expectations had lowered, he gave it a try. Initially, he asked questions to himself to call upon the knowledge that he was supposed to have. This made him get more questions out of confusion. One of them being the fact that he wasn't supposed to be able to create runes; Edrit possessed the profession of Rune Creation.

Edrit lived in a different world, not the same as Leo. Which could be used to conclude that these rules simply worked differently in the world where Leo lives.

Leo created this assumption based on the memories of Edrit's life in that other world.

Then he got it, the most simple rune he could try: no special situation required, and no knowledge on an advanced concept required.

He grabbed a rock from the canyon's floor. Dusty and dark-gray color, nothing special about it. Without the need of any inscription, he covered the rock with his right hand. In the same way as Edrit did at some point, Leo tried using the energy he was supposed to have.

Leo didn't have this energy initially, but the moment he tried using it, it felt like a transaction, as if he was losing something at the same time as he was receiving that energy.

After some struggle he created that rune. It had the ability to make a glow, a simple and small light.

Leo didn't see how the gift he received could help him in his situation. He questioned if it was worth it to continue living. He lost his parents so fast, but couldn't even react to that, since everything happened so fast. He questioned if there was a reason to actually improve Edrit's legacy when he didn't even get all the knowledge he was promised. The gift he received didn't seem like something he needed, but more like something that has made him responsible. He thought for a moment. He only decided to accept this legacy because he wasn't even able to process the information he was receiving. He retracted his decision for a long interval, but finally. He decided to continue living, it was as if those memories affected in some way his perception of what he wanted.
