Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 — The Empty Bowl

The passage beyond the ancient kitchen descended into darkness.

Ren Kai walked at the front, carrying the Hearthkeeper's Ember inside a small protective pouch. Its golden light seeped through the fabric, illuminating the stone steps beneath his feet.

Behind him, Luo Xue kept one hand near her sword.

Lianhua walked beside Xiao Liu, occasionally checking that the boy hadn't fallen behind.

The deeper they descended, the colder the air became.

"How far does this place go?" Xiao Liu asked.

Ren Kai glanced at the staircase.

"I don't know."

"That's reassuring."

"You asked."

Xiao Liu sighed.

Luo Xue almost smiled.

The staircase eventually ended at a circular landing. Three enormous stone doors stood before them, each marked with a different symbol.

The first depicted four bowls arranged around a table.

The second showed a burning hearth.

The third depicted an empty bowl.

Ren Kai approached the final door.

[Trial Progress: 2/3]

First Principle: The First Sharing — Recognized.

Second Principle: The Unbroken Flame — Recognized.

Third Principle: The Empty Bowl — Awaiting Recognition.

Objective: Complete the final trial.

Warning: The third principle cannot be overcome through culinary technique alone.

Ren Kai studied the inscription.

"The Empty Bowl."

Lianhua stepped beside him.

"My mother's memory mentioned three fragments. Memory, sacrifice, and truth."

She looked at the door.

"I wonder whether those three principles are connected to them."

"Perhaps," Ren Kai said. "But we shouldn't assume the temple's trials are the same as the pendant's inheritance."

Luo Xue nodded.

"Whatever is behind that door, we should be prepared."

Ren Kai placed his palm against the stone.

The Hearthkeeper's Ember warmed inside his robes.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the two symbols on the door began to glow.

The first.

The second.

Finally, the third.

A deep rumble echoed through the staircase.

The door opened.

Beyond it was a dining hall.

Ren Kai stopped.

The room was enormous, with a ceiling that disappeared into darkness. Long stone tables stretched from one end to the other. Thousands of bowls sat upon them, each perfectly clean and completely empty.

At the far end stood a raised platform.

On it rested a single wooden chair.

Someone was sitting there.

An old man.

His robes were faded, his hair white, and his face deeply lined. He looked ordinary enough, except for the golden markings running down his hands.

A small bowl rested on the table before him.

Unlike the others, it was cracked.

The old man raised his head.

"Another cook."

Ren Kai stepped forward.

"Are you the guardian of this trial?"

The old man looked at him.

"I am the last person who waited."

"Waited for what?"

"For someone to bring me a meal."

Ren Kai glanced at the empty bowls.

"How long have you been waiting?"

The old man smiled.

"Long enough to forget."

The chamber trembled.

[Trial of Hunger: Final Test]

Principle: The Empty Bowl.

Objective: Complete the meal.

Restriction: The participant may not prepare food for themselves.

Time Limit: None.

Failure Condition: Abandon the hungry.

Warning: The bowl cannot be filled through ordinary cooking.

Ren Kai frowned.

"That's vague."

The old man laughed.

"Good. A cook who believes every problem has a recipe has much to learn."

He gestured toward the tables.

"Sit."

Ren Kai looked at his companions.

Luo Xue remained standing.

Lianhua approached the nearest table.

Xiao Liu looked at the old man suspiciously.

"Are we supposed to eat?"

The old man smiled.

"That depends. Are you hungry?"

Xiao Liu hesitated.

Then he nodded.

"Yes."

"Then sit."

The boy pulled out a chair.

Ren Kai examined the old man's bowl.

Its crack ran from the rim to the base. There was nothing inside it.

"What's your name?" he asked.

The old man looked down.

"I don't remember."

Ren Kai's expression changed.

Another damaged memory.

He approached the table.

"Do you remember anything?"

"Warmth."

The old man touched the bowl.

"Someone's hands. A kitchen. The sound of a knife against a board."

He paused.

"And hunger."

Ren Kai sat opposite him.

"What did you want to eat?"

The old man looked up.

"I don't know."

The system chimed.

[Analysis Incomplete]

Target: Unknown Ancient Memory.

Condition: Severely fragmented.

Potential Cause: Memory erosion.

Recommended Action: Restore the missing intent.

Ren Kai leaned back.

He had no ingredients.

No stove.

No cooking utensils.

And the system couldn't identify what the old man wanted.

He looked around the chamber.

Thousands of empty bowls.

A dining hall without food.

A person waiting for a meal he couldn't remember.

Something about it felt familiar.

Not because he had seen it before.

Because he understood it.

Ren Kai examined the nearest table.

A small inscription was carved into its surface.

"The bowl is not empty because nothing has been given. It is empty because something has been withheld."

He read it twice.

"What does that mean?" Lianhua asked.

"I don't know yet."

He walked along the table.

Other inscriptions appeared.

"The hand that gives must also receive."

"The cook who never sits at the table will eventually forget the taste of food."

"No one can nourish the world while refusing to be nourished."

Ren Kai stopped.

He thought about his stall.

He had spent months feeding other people.

The children.

The cultivators.

The merchants.

Even people who had once looked down on him.

He had cooked until his hands hurt and his Qi was exhausted.

He had refused help more times than he could count.

Even when his cart was destroyed, he had insisted on rebuilding it himself.

He looked at the inscription again.

The hand that gives must also receive.

"Ren Kai?"

Lianhua's voice pulled him from his thoughts.

She stood beside one of the tables.

"Look."

A faint golden mark had appeared on the surface.

It resembled a hand holding a bowl.

When she touched it, the mark brightened.

A voice echoed through the chamber.

"Who feeds the cook?"

The question lingered.

Luo Xue looked toward Ren Kai.

"Apparently, that's what we're supposed to answer."

Ren Kai stared at the old man.

The final trial wasn't asking him to prepare a dish.

It was asking him to understand something about himself.

He returned to his seat.

"Can I ask you something?"

The old man nodded.

"Why are you waiting for someone to bring you a meal?"

The old man looked at the cracked bowl.

"Because I cannot cook anymore."

"Why?"

"My hands are gone."

Ren Kai looked down.

The old man's hands were still there.

But the golden markings running across them were fading.

"Not physically," the old man continued. "I have forgotten how to use them."

He lifted his fingers.

"They once knew every movement. Every ingredient. Every flame. I could prepare a meal without thinking."

His eyes grew distant.

"Then I began cooking for kings. For sect masters. For emperors. They wanted perfection. They wanted dishes that could break bottlenecks, extend lifespans, and grant immortality."

He lowered his hands.

"I gave them what they wanted."

Ren Kai listened.

"But somewhere along the way, I stopped cooking for the hungry. I stopped cooking for myself. I became so concerned with what others expected that I forgot why I had entered the kitchen."

The old man looked at Ren Kai.

"Tell me, cook. What happens when a person spends their entire life feeding others?"

Ren Kai thought about it.

"They become tired."

The old man nodded.

"And?"

"They might forget to eat."

The old man's smile widened.

"Exactly."

A soft chime sounded.

[Trial Response Detected]

Understanding: Incomplete.

Required Principle: Accept nourishment.

Ren Kai frowned.

Accept nourishment.

He glanced toward the others.

Lianhua had already begun examining the empty bowls.

Luo Xue stood near the entrance, watching the chamber.

Xiao Liu was sitting at the table, his feet swinging beneath the chair.

The boy looked at Ren Kai.

"Are we going to cook?"

"I don't think so."

"Then what are we doing?"

Ren Kai looked at the old man.

"Trying to understand."

Xiao Liu considered that.

"Maybe you should let someone else cook for once."

Ren Kai blinked.

"What?"

The boy shrugged.

"You always cook. Even when you're tired. Even when you're hurt."

He looked toward the old man's bowl.

"Maybe someone should feed you."

Ren Kai stared at him.

Lianhua turned.

"Xiao Liu might be right."

Luo Xue approached the table.

"I agree."

Ren Kai looked between them.

"You're all suggesting that I sit here and let someone else cook?"

"Yes," Luo Xue replied.

"That's the trial?"

"We don't know," she said. "But we have nothing to lose by trying."

Ren Kai looked at the empty bowls.

Then at the old man.

He had spent so long believing that his value came from what he could provide.

His cooking.

His knowledge.

His ability to solve problems.

He had never considered that accepting help might be part of the same path.

He slowly nodded.

"Alright."

He stepped away from the table.

Lianhua looked surprised.

"You're actually going to let us?"

"Apparently, I need to learn something."

Xiao Liu grinned.

"Good. Because I'm hungry."

They searched the chamber.

There were no ingredients, no stoves, and no hidden pantry.

But near the far wall, Luo Xue discovered a narrow alcove containing four wooden trays.

Each tray held a single object.

A small clay cup.

A wooden spoon.

A folded cloth.

And a smooth stone.

Luo Xue examined them.

"These look like kitchen tools."

"Not exactly," Lianhua said.

She picked up the clay cup.

The moment her fingers touched it, a faint light appeared.

[Ancient Culinary Relic Detected]

Item: Vessel of Receiving.

Function: Unknown.

Lianhua placed it on the table.

Xiao Liu picked up the wooden spoon.

It was unusually heavy.

The system identified it as the Spoon of Memory.

Luo Xue examined the folded cloth.

It was called the Cloth of Comfort.

Ren Kai picked up the smooth stone.

It was warm.

[Item Detected]

Name: Hearthstone.

Classification: Ancient Culinary Relic.

Function: Preserves the intent of a shared meal.

The four objects began to glow.

A line of golden light connected them.

Then a fifth object appeared on the table.

A small wooden bowl.

Unlike the others, it was completely empty.

Ren Kai approached it.

The system chimed.

[Trial Mechanism Activated]

Instruction: Prepare a meal for the one who has forgotten how to receive.

Available Resources: Four Ancient Relics.

Restriction: The participant must not cook.

Ren Kai stared.

"So we're supposed to make a meal without cooking."

Lianhua nodded.

"Or perhaps we're supposed to make one together."

Xiao Liu looked at the wooden bowl.

"Can we put something in it?"

The old man watched them.

"That is what you must discover."

Lianhua took the clay cup.

She held it in both hands.

"I don't know what this is supposed to do."

Ren Kai started to answer.

Then he stopped.

This was their trial.

Not his.

He stepped back.

"Try something."

Lianhua closed her eyes.

The pendant against her chest glowed.

A faint memory surfaced.

Her mother stood in a kitchen, pouring warm water into a cup.

"Before you prepare a meal, understand who will receive it."

Lianhua opened her eyes.

She looked at the old man.

"Would you like some water?"

The old man stared at her.

For the first time, his expression changed.

"Water?"

"Yes."

He nodded slowly.

Lianhua lifted the clay cup.

A stream of clear water appeared inside it.

She carried it to the old man's table.

He reached for it.

His fingers trembled.

Then he stopped.

"I cannot."

"Why?"

"I have forgotten how to receive."

Lianhua looked at him.

"Then start with one sip."

She placed the cup before him.

The old man stared at it for a long moment.

Finally, he lifted it.

He drank.

A golden light spread across the table.

[First Offering Accepted]

Principle: The Willingness to Receive.

The old man's hands became clearer.

Ren Kai watched silently.

The trial was responding.

Not to a recipe.

To an act of care.

Xiao Liu approached next.

He held the wooden spoon.

"I don't know what to do with this."

The old man looked at him.

"Then tell me something."

"What?"

"Why did you come here?"

Xiao Liu glanced at Ren Kai.

Then at the old man.

"Because I didn't want him going alone."

"Why?"

"Because he's my friend."

The old man studied him.

"Is that all?"

Xiao Liu thought for a moment.

"He fed me when I was hungry. He didn't ask me to do anything first."

His voice became quieter.

"Before that, most people told me to leave."

He looked down at the spoon.

"I wanted to help him."

The wooden spoon glowed.

A faint sound emerged from it.

The clatter of dishes.

The laughter of children.

The sound of someone saying, There's enough for everyone.

Xiao Liu smiled.

"That's nice."

He placed the spoon beside the bowl.

[Second Offering Accepted]

Principle: The Memory of Kindness.

Luo Xue approached with the folded cloth.

She looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know what this expects from me."

The old man regarded her.

"What do you carry, warrior?"

Luo Xue's expression hardened.

"My sword."

"That is what you hold. Not what you carry."

She fell silent.

For a moment, the chamber seemed to grow colder.

"My master," she said eventually.

The old man nodded.

"Tell me."

"She taught me to survive. She taught me to fight. She taught me that weakness invites death."

Her fingers tightened around the cloth.

"But she also taught me that strength means nothing if you cannot protect someone."

She looked toward Ren Kai.

"He saved my life. I owe him."

Ren Kai opened his mouth.

Luo Xue raised a hand.

"Don't interrupt."

He closed it.

She continued.

"I don't know whether I'll ever repay that debt. But I can still stand beside him."

The cloth brightened.

A soft warmth spread across the table.

Luo Xue placed it beside the wooden spoon.

[Third Offering Accepted]

Principle: The Strength to Be Supported.

The old man looked toward the final object.

The Hearthstone.

Ren Kai picked it up.

It was warm against his palm.

He understood why the others had needed to act first.

The last offering belonged to him.

He looked at the old man.

"What do you want me to do?"

The old man smiled.

"That is the question, isn't it?"

Ren Kai placed the Hearthstone beside the wooden bowl.

Nothing happened.

He waited.

Still nothing.

The old man looked at him.

"Tell me, cook. What do you need?"

Ren Kai frowned.

"Need?"

"Yes."

He looked toward the others.

Then at the bowl.

He had been so focused on what the old man needed that he hadn't considered the question for himself.

What did he need?

He needed strength.

Knowledge.

The truth about the Ancient Chefs.

He needed to understand the Divine Recipe and stop the Alchemy Emperor.

He needed to protect the people who had trusted him.

But those were things he wanted to accomplish.

They weren't what he needed.

He thought of his mother.

Her hands.

Her kitchen.

Her voice.

He remembered the years at Azure Mist Sect, eating scraps and pretending he wasn't hungry.

He remembered how he had refused to ask for help because he didn't want anyone to see how desperate he was.

He looked at the others.

"I need..." His voice caught.

He took a breath.

"I need people I can trust."

The Hearthstone glowed.

"I need someone to tell me when I'm wrong. Someone to stand beside me when I can't keep going."

The bowl trembled.

"And sometimes..."

He looked at Xiao Liu.

"Sometimes I need someone to cook for me."

The chamber filled with golden light.

[Fourth Offering Accepted]

Principle: The Courage to Accept.

The wooden bowl lifted into the air.

The four relics dissolved into streams of light, which flowed into its empty center.

The cracked bowl before the old man began to repair itself.

Then the two bowls exchanged places.

The repaired bowl appeared before him.

The empty wooden bowl settled before Ren Kai.

A system notification appeared.

[Trial of Hunger: Final Test Complete]

Third Principle Recognized: The Empty Bowl.

Understanding Acquired: A cook must also know how to receive.

Trial Progress: 3/3.

Overall Result: Passed.

Rewards:

Ancient Culinary Insight — Expanded.

Intent Cooking Experience.

Ancient Chef Memory Fragment.

Chef Temple Access — Inner Sanctuary.

New Passive Trait: Shared Table.

Effect: Culinary techniques and dishes prepared with willing companions may develop additional resonance. The effect varies according to trust, intent, and compatibility.

The old man stood.

His body was no longer translucent.

The golden markings on his hands had become clear, and his faded robes shimmered faintly.

He looked at Ren Kai.

"Now you understand."

Ren Kai nodded slowly.

"I think I do."

The old man smiled.

"No. You have begun to understand. There is a difference."

He looked toward the thousands of empty bowls.

"Many came here seeking the secrets of the Ancient Chefs. They believed the temple contained techniques powerful enough to rival the heavens."

His eyes returned to Ren Kai.

"But the first lesson was always simple."

He placed a hand over his chest.

"A cook cannot give what he refuses to receive."

Ren Kai looked at the repaired bowl.

"Who are you?"

The old man smiled.

"I was once the keeper of this dining hall."

"Your name?"

The old man closed his eyes.

For a moment, the chamber shimmered.

Then he answered.

"Han Shou."

The name echoed through the room.

A memory surfaced.

A white-stone kitchen.

A long table.

A young woman serving food to a gathering of Ancient Chefs.

A man standing at the end of the table, laughing as he passed a bowl to someone beside him.

Han Shou.

He had been there.

He had belonged to this place.

"Master Han," Ren Kai said.

The old man shook his head.

"That title no longer belongs to me."

He looked toward the distant ceiling.

"The inner sanctuary is open. Beyond it lies the first record of the Divine Recipe."

Ren Kai's expression sharpened.

"The Divine Recipe?"

Han Shou nodded.

"But understand this. The Divine Recipe is not a single dish. It is a path. Its fragments were scattered because no one person was meant to possess the whole."

Ren Kai thought of the Alchemy Emperor.

"Someone is searching for it."

"I know."

Han Shou's expression darkened.

"The one who devours what he cannot create."

The room grew cold.

"Do you know who he is?"

"I know what he became."

Han Shou looked toward the empty bowls.

"He was once a student of the Ancient Chefs."

Ren Kai felt his stomach tighten.

Another Ancient Chef.

Another betrayal.

"Was he the one who destroyed the lineage?"

Han Shou didn't answer immediately.

"Some stories are too dangerous to remember before you have the strength to carry them."

He turned toward the far end of the hall.

A doorway appeared.

Golden light spilled through its opening.

"Go. The inner sanctuary awaits."

Before they could move, Lianhua's pendant began to glow.

She gasped.

A thin line of golden light spread across its surface.

Then another.

The memory fragment she had awakened in the previous chamber was reacting to the completion of the three principles.

[Ancestral Resonance Detected]

Chef Hua — Second Memory Fragment.

Trigger: Completion of Trial of Hunger.

Activation: Available.

Lianhua looked at Ren Kai.

"Should I?"

Ren Kai nodded.

"If you're ready."

She held the pendant in both hands.

The light expanded.

A woman appeared before them.

This time, her face was clearer.

She had Lianhua's dark eyes and a similar shape to her smile. Her hair was tied behind her head, and her white robes were stained with flour.

Lianhua took a step forward.

"Mother."

The woman turned.

"Lianhua."

The sound of her name broke something inside her.

She covered her mouth.

The memory smiled.

"You've grown."

Lianhua's eyes filled with tears.

"I wanted to find you."

"I know."

"I wanted to know why you left me."

The woman's expression softened.

"I never wanted to leave."

The image flickered.

"Listen carefully. The world you were born into was already changing. The Alchemist Guild was no longer satisfied with controlling ingredients and cultivation methods. They had begun searching for the Divine Recipe."

Ren Kai listened closely.

"Why?" he asked.

The memory turned toward him.

"So they could create something that should never exist."

"What?"

The woman's face became serious.

"A dish capable of consuming the boundary between life and death."

Silence filled the chamber.

"The Divine Recipe was never intended to grant immortality. It was created to restore what had been lost. But someone changed its purpose."

Ren Kai thought of the Alchemy Emperor.

"Was it him?"

The memory paused.

"I cannot tell you his name."

"Why?"

"Because the memory was sealed before I learned the full truth."

Lianhua stepped forward.

"Then what can you tell us?"

The woman's expression softened again.

"The third fragment carries the truth. It was entrusted to someone who would never willingly give it to the Guild."

The image began to fade.

"Find the one who remembers the first kitchen."

Ren Kai frowned.

"The first kitchen?"

But the memory was already disappearing.

One final sentence reached them.

"And Lianhua, never let anyone convince you that your blood is a debt you must repay."

The light vanished.

Lianhua stood still.

Then she lowered her head.

A tear fell onto the pendant.

Ren Kai didn't interrupt.

After a moment, she wiped her face.

"She knew."

"About the betrothal?" Ren Kai asked.

Lianhua nodded.

"She knew what my father would try to do. She wanted me to choose my own path."

Luo Xue stepped beside her.

"Then you have."

Lianhua looked at her.

"Yes."

Her fingers closed around the pendant.

"And I'm not going back."

[Quest Updated: THE CHEF TEMPLE]

Trial of Hunger: Complete.

Ancient Principles Recognized: 3/3.

Ancestral Memory Fragments: 2/3.

New Objective: Enter the Inner Sanctuary.

Secondary Objective: Discover the Third Pendant of the Last Chef.

New Information: The Divine Recipe was created to restore what was lost, but its purpose was corrupted.

Warning: The Alchemy Emperor may possess knowledge of the original recipe.

Ren Kai studied the notification.

Two of three memory fragments.

Two of three pendants.

The temple was beginning to reveal its secrets, but every answer seemed to lead to another question.

He looked toward Han Shou.

"Will you come with us?"

The old man smiled.

"I have waited long enough."

His body began to dissolve into golden light.

"Where I am needed, I will remain."

The light gathered around the repaired bowl.

Then it settled into a small golden mark on Ren Kai's wrist.

[Ancient Memory Imprint Acquired]

Han Shou — Keeper of the Empty Bowl.

Effect: Allows the host to recall fragments of ancient culinary principles when facing situations involving hunger, sharing, and sacrifice.

Ren Kai examined the mark.

Another memory.

Another connection.

But the old man's final words stayed with him.

"Remember, Ren Kai. The greatest danger to a cook is not hunger."

"What is it?"

"Believing you are the only one who can feed the world."

The dining hall faded.

The empty bowls disappeared.

And the four of them stood before the golden doorway.

Beyond it waited the Inner Sanctuary.

Ren Kai looked at his companions.

Xiao Liu was still holding the wooden spoon, though the relic had become an ordinary piece of wood.

Luo Xue seemed more relaxed than before.

Lianhua's eyes were red, but her expression was firm.

Ren Kai smiled.

"Let's go."

They crossed the threshold.

The Inner Sanctuary was unlike anything they had seen.

A vast circular chamber stretched beneath a dome of white stone. Golden lines covered its walls, forming intricate patterns that resembled recipes, cultivation diagrams, and constellations.

At its center stood a massive stone tablet.

Ren Kai recognized it immediately.

It was similar to the ancient tablet that had awakened his system in the broken kitchen oven.

But this one was larger.

Much older.

Its surface was covered in writing.

His system erupted with notifications.

[Ancient Culinary Archive Detected]

Ren Kai approached the tablet.

The golden feather inside his robes began to vibrate.

The Hearthkeeper's Ember responded.

Then both pendants flared.

A single line appeared across the stone.

"The first recipe was not written. It was remembered."

Ren Kai placed his hand against the tablet.

The chamber went dark.

A voice emerged from somewhere deep within the stone.

Not Han Shou.

Not Chef Hua.

Something older.

Something that sounded as though it had been waiting since the beginning of the world.

"Welcome, descendant of the First Kitchen."

Ren Kai's system went silent.

Then a final message appeared.

[Divine Recipe Fragment Detected]

Fragment One: The Origin of Flavor.

Status: Sealed.

Unlock Condition: Unknown.

Warning: An external presence has detected the archive's awakening.

Ren Kai's blood ran cold.

The tablet flashed.

For a fraction of a second, he saw a distant figure standing before an enormous golden furnace.

A crown rested upon the figure's head.

Its face was hidden.

But its voice reached him.

"At last."

The image vanished.

"The last ingredient has awakened."

The chamber trembled.

And somewhere far beyond the Whispering Forest, the Alchemy Emperor opened his eyes.
