Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Elder Mira’s Gift

Morning arrived with the now familiar sound of Roran's gentle knocking, but before his friend could enter, a different presence made itself known outside Aethros's door.

The spiritual pressure was far more refined than Helena's crude display of power, carrying the weight of centuries rather than mere decades, and Aethros recognized immediately that Elder Mira Silverleaf had come to visit the supposedly worthless young master for reasons that were almost certainly not coincidental.

He called out permission to enter and watched with careful attention as the Vex family's most powerful cultivator stepped into his modest room with movements that seemed to glide rather than walk, her Spirit Sovereign realm cultivation making even simple actions appear effortlessly graceful in ways that only someone with Aethros's experience could truly appreciate.

"Young Master Hadrian," Elder Mira said with a voice that carried layers of meaning beneath its surface politeness, and her eyes fixed on him with an intensity that made Aethros wonder exactly how much she suspected about his true nature. "I heard that you have regained consciousness, and I thought perhaps we should have a conversation about your recent transformation and what it might mean for your future within this family."

She settled into the chair that Roran usually occupied, moving with casual confidence that suggested she had every right to be here despite never having visited Hadrian's room in the five years since his meridians were crippled, and her spiritual sense swept over Aethros's body in an examination that was thorough enough to be intrusive but subtle enough that most people would not have noticed it happening.

Aethros allowed the examination without resistance, understanding that trying to hide from someone of Elder Mira's cultivation level would be both futile and suspicious, but he carefully maintained the barriers around his soul that concealed the true depth of his reincarnated consciousness and the Supreme Lord level knowledge that resided within.

What she would detect was exactly what he wanted her to find, a young man with extensively damaged meridians and extremely weak cultivation base, but perhaps with slightly more mental clarity and emotional stability than Hadrian had displayed in recent years.

"Elder Mira," Aethros said while sitting up straighter and offering the respectful bow that Hadrian's memories suggested was appropriate for someone of her status. "I am honored by your visit, though I confess I am uncertain what I have done to merit such attention from the family's most esteemed cultivator."

"You have changed," Elder Mira stated flatly, abandoning any pretense of social niceties in favor of direct confrontation that Aethros could respect even as it made him more cautious about how much to reveal. "The boy who occupied this room two weeks ago was broken in spirit as well as body, defeated by circumstances and wallowing in despair that poisoned everything around him. But the person I see before me now carries himself with dignity and speaks with confidence that should not exist in someone facing the prospects you currently face."

She leaned forward slightly, her gaze never leaving his face as if she could read the truth written in his eyes if she looked hard enough.

"So I will ask you directly, Hadrian Vex, what happened during that fever that transformed you so completely, and should I be concerned about what might be hiding behind your new facade?"

The question was dangerously perceptive, and Aethros realized that Elder Mira was far more observant than the rest of the family who were too absorbed in their own problems to notice subtle changes in the supposedly worthless young master.

He needed to provide an explanation that would satisfy her curiosity without revealing anything that would invite deeper investigation or make her suspicious enough to report her concerns to Lord Cassian.

"I nearly died," Aethros said with complete honesty, allowing some of the actual terror he had felt during the Cycle of Phoenix Rebirth to color his voice. "The fever pushed me to the edge of the void, and while I was there, I saw clearly for perhaps the first time in five years exactly how much of my life I had wasted on self-pity and useless regret."

He paused and met her eyes with the directness that came naturally after ten thousand years of negotiations and political maneuvering, knowing that lies would be detected but partial truths might pass scrutiny if delivered with sufficient conviction.

"I realized that I could choose to continue dying slowly, drowning in bitterness and despair until my body finally gave out or the family cast me aside, or I could accept my limitations and find ways to live with dignity despite circumstances I cannot change. So when I woke from the fever, I decided to choose life and dignity, even if that means accepting a future very different from what I once imagined for myself."

Elder Mira studied him in silence for a long moment, her spiritual sense pressing against his defenses with more force now as if testing the strength of the barriers he had erected around his soul.

Aethros held firm without appearing to resist, a delicate balance that required precisely calibrated control, and eventually she withdrew with an expression that mixed approval with lingering suspicion that suggested she did not fully believe his explanation but was willing to accept it provisionally.

"That is a mature perspective for someone so young," she finally said while reaching into her robes and withdrawing a small jade pendant that glowed with soft golden light. "And it deserves acknowledgment and perhaps some small assistance in making your new path easier to walk."

The pendant she offered was carved with formation patterns that Aethros recognized immediately as protective arrays of exceptional sophistication, far beyond what should exist in this declining era of cultivation knowledge.

The formations were designed to shield the wearer from spiritual attacks up to Soul Transformation realm, provide passive healing acceleration, and even offer limited defense against physical harm through a barrier that would activate automatically when danger was detected.

This was not some trinket thrown together by a mediocre formation master but rather the work of someone who understood arrays at a level that approached Aethros's own expertise from his original life, and the implications of Elder Mira casually giving away such a treasure were staggering.

"This is far too valuable," Aethros protested while genuine shock colored his voice, because even accounting for Elder Mira's wealth and status, protective formations of this quality represented months of work and resources that most cultivators would guard jealously rather than gifting to someone the family considered worthless trash. "I cannot accept something of such worth when I have done nothing to earn it and may never be in a position to repay such generosity."

The refusal was partially genuine because accepting gifts of this magnitude created obligations that could become complicated, but it was also a calculated test to see how Elder Mira would respond and what her true motivations might be for helping Hadrian.

"You can and you will," Elder Mira said with a tone that brooked no argument, and she pressed the pendant into Aethros's hand with surprising firmness. "Consider it an investment in potential that others are too blind to see, or perhaps payment for entertainment that watching your future development will provide me in what promises to be a very boring decline into obscurity for this family."

Her expression softened slightly, and for just a moment Aethros caught a glimpse of something that might have been genuine affection beneath the layers of pragmatism and self-interest.

"I knew you as a child, Hadrian Vex, before the accident that crippled your meridians and broke something in your spirit. You were kind and curious and possessed of a wisdom that seemed far beyond your years, and I have mourned the loss of that child every day since he disappeared into bitterness and despair."

She stood and moved toward the door, her movements once again displaying that effortless grace that came from centuries of cultivation refinement.

"So accept the pendant and use it to protect yourself as you walk this new path you have chosen, because I suspect that the road ahead will be far more dangerous than you currently realize, and having some small protection might mean the difference between survival and destruction when circumstances force you to make difficult choices."

Elder Mira paused at the threshold and looked back at him with an expression that was impossible to read. "And Hadrian know that I will be watching your progress with great interest, and that if you prove worthy of my investment, you may find that you have more allies in this family than you currently suspect."
